Pastor David Guzik gave this teaching at one of Calvary Chapel Santa Barbara's midweek services some weeks back. In this part of the Abide series, David speaks on the doctrine of the Holy Spirit and dives deeper into the major prophets.

If you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit is in you. You just need to pray for Jesus to help you understand Him more. This was the BEST teaching I have heard - which is focused on the Holy Spirit.

I still say Paul, in Ephesians 5, is contrasting drunkenness and not formulating a doctrine of a subsequent filling, if we properly exegete Ephesians 5, in my opinion. You can disagree, but how about this? In the context of walking circumspectly and not as fools but as wise. “Not being (controlled) by the influence of wine but being (controlled) by the Holy Spirit” Similar concept in the previous chapter. “that you put off concerning your former conduct, the (old man) which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the (new man) which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness” That being said, I enjoyed your teaching, thank you David.

In the strictest sense, the office of Apostle no longer exists, in my opinion. The 1st century apostles were eyewitnesses of Jesus, and their teaching established the foundation of theology for the Christians church. IN that sense, the office of apostle no longer exists. We recognize that some men have a large influence in the Body of Christ around the world, and they have apostle like ministries, but in the strictest sense, I would not call them apostles. People have the gift of prophecy in the church today, but once again, their stature is nowhere near the prophets of times that the Bible was written. We need to be careful to not be quick to call anyone a prophet, and we need to remember that God called for capital punishment for those who spoke in his name but led people astray. I am not suggesting capital punishment, but rather, the serious nature of calling someone a prophet ought to be done so with the highest care.

Who is the Holy Spirit? You know that "God (the Father) is a spirit". The "FATHER who is a spirit" is called "Father" by Jesus. But the "SPIRIT who is the Father" (nothing actually changed) is called "Holy Spirit" instead. I.e. it's a fully equivalent name.

Hi Claudio, The study of the Holy Spirit is a deep and broad study. Here are some verses from the Gospel of John. Perhaps looking these up on the Enduring Word web site can offer some answers. Here's a link to the Enduring Word commentary on John. enduringword.com/bible-commentary/john-1/
