In 2010, John Mayer was in a crisis. A number of interviews left him with an image he'd been so desperately trying to escape, and on top of this, vocal surgery meant he was unable to sing or speak. But this time was actually a blessing in disguise. The music that came from this time Born and Raised offered a new musical perspective. Something that would stick with him for years to come.

I changed my whole life immediately after Born & Raised released. Checked myself into rehab for crippling opioid addiction. We weren’t allowed phones or any tech, but there was a CD player in the basement where they held their AA meetings. I had my parents burn me a CD of Born & Raised and nothing else - that record got me thru the most rough 2 months of my life 🙏

I had the privilege of working with John on this album. I made the cover art for him back in 2012 and it was a fun couple of months creating something special. We have stayed in touch over the years with other projects and to this day he continues to touch peoples lives with his beautiful music and incredible guitar playing. Great to see the glass signs I made for him as a gift at that time.

@@manwiththeplan67 so here's the thing, that record is indisputably great. That along with Continuum is the reason his brand of "three sets" solo acoustic/trio/band thing he pioneered with Where The Light Is in his career, exists as a part of it. But that's why hearing him play blues with the trio only works for me as a live performance thing. His enthusiasm to emulate the greats is most infectious on the visual medium of a concert or music film. Musically, Born and Raised and the rest of his more commercial discography doesn't hold a candle to what he did in the late 2000s but artistically he really came into his own and it makes for a far more engaging streaming listen for me.

Playboy and Rolling Stone era is what hurt him. What stings is how he really worked on himself and I believe he has sincerely grown up. The wisest thing I’ve heard him say (professionally) is that he stopped trying to be famous and focused on being a musician (loosely). I’m proud of John Mayer. I’m a proud fan. His music is the soundtrack to my life. And I suspect it will always be. ✌🏼💜

I agree his latest releases are so simple, soothing, and natural. I love him so much more now. I did stop listening after his playboy stage, I said to myself wow this can’t be him. And then I found him again when I stumbled across the search for everything. What a beautiful album. Then I went back paradise valley born and raised then forward to sob rock. I think Montana was the best thing that could have happened to the man. The granuloma gave him time to think. Dare I say a blessing in disguise. Whatever it is, I love John more now than ever before. I don’t know why he is a heartbreaker, maybe one day he will make a movie about it. Until then I hope he is happy and one day, maybe he will settle down and have a family of his own. I wish him nothing but the best.

@@sabineramirez3899 The Playboy interview era was cringey, that’s for sure. But I never stopped being his fan or listening to him. It was kinda like when a good friend you know is a good person does or says a few stupid things, but you know it’s not really like them so you stick by them and have their back. Lol I do agree, I think Montana did him some good. It reground him. His scary experience with granuloma and not being able to speak/sing for 2 years definitely a hidden blessing. I love everything about this man. Even the bits of him I don’t. He’s talented, wise yet still fun and playful. He’s grown up. And so what if it took a mini longer. Mayer was a kid. He grew up into a tremendous human being. I remember hearing one of his early records in a Barnes and Noble. Blew me away. Bought it, never listened to it. And I saw Hendrix and SRV. I really discovered him during the pandemic when I decided that playing guitar was the thing I wanted to focus on in my old age. Much of this nonsense reminds me of Idiot Wind. I take point with a couple things here. “But the songwriting still felt very safe, like we were only scratching the surface of who he was and we didn’t really see deep into the heart of the songwriter.” 2:00 I appreciate the video and totally agree with how Born and Raised changed him..but Heavier Things is probably one of the few lyrical masterpiece albums in existence and without a doubt tells you where his head and heart were at that time. Continuum being his magnum opus. To discount those 2 albums because it wasn’t simplistic enough tells me you do not know the gravity (pun intended) of how profound his music was at a time (early 2000s) where this style of music was very much about to cease to exist. Blues rock or blues pop as he called it wasn’t seen on a scale like this in over a decade and I think without his music, we don’t get the likes of an Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, etc to the level that they have been popularity wise. I suggest revisiting a few videos 10 more songs and Someday I’ll Fly. Tells you everything you need to know

Agreed I totally feel you. Those albums were really good. And bigger than my body was a great song. I don’t think he’s ever put out a bad album. I still like room for squares and your body is a wonderland!

I feel like there were individual songs in his previously albums that touched on the sound in born and raised…. “In your atmosphere” for example, but I guess having already proved to that he can make hits. ‘Born & Raised’ felt like an album for himself more than anyone else. I also feel like his collaborations with Frank Ocean are so slept on. I still listen to ‘whiskey whiskey whiskey’, ‘something like Olivia’ & ‘Age of Worry’ all the time. Amazing artist

I've loved john since i was 6 and watched any given thursday on my dvd player most days. I didnt listen to born and raised a lot and liked his contemporary side more. The older i got I realized this was not only his most important album but his best. So much maturing and reflection and its all beautifully written. Ill always be glad to live in the same time as john mayer and id be a very different person if he didnt exist. Its so cool to that I got to grow up while he was doing the same even if weve never met.

I still have this album as a CD still in the wrapping. This album was my life. I was in my mid 20s. Life was hard and this music helped me groove through. In high school Battle Studies did the exact same thing. The songs had elements of my own life. John Mayer is my favorite artist of all time. Greatest guitarist of my generation. John Mayer is just a dude playing his songs and living.

Absolutely well crafted video David. I adore John Mayer and seeing him in Amsterdam next year! Im super pumped. You were talking about simplicity at the end. One of my other favorite artist is Jack Johnson. I was wondering if you could do a video about him? That guy is pure inspirational!
