Gaia has a private land layer. Oftentimes, public land is accessed by road easements through private land. As long as you stay on the road, you are fine. Also, sometimes landowners lock gates illegally to prevent legal users from accessing public land. Best to check with the managing agency.

Great video, but let's talk about the real issue here. There are large swaths of U.S. public land, intended for the public to enjoy, but completely landlocked by private landowners. Something needs to be done to address the issue. Or, are we okay with only a handful of wealthy land owners accessing these thousands of acres of public land because they've encircled it? Personally, I believe at the very least we need to have public corridors to these public lands.

Amazing video man! May be helpful to share with your viewers that onx typically has names AND ADDRESSES of private property owners in the event you might want to plan a trip. Write them and ask permission to cross their land. Many times people are amenable if you have the courtesy to ask them in writing, telling them of your plans, what you want to do, etc. Probably even easier if you just want to camp, and aren't hunting.

Just found your channel and joined before I finished the first video. Reasons being, aside from the content, which is thoughtful and beautifully delivered, you're in my neck of the woods (central Washington), you're also a Bronco person (we have 3 in the family!) and you were very respectful of private property owner's rights. Also, yes, On-X is what we use. FWIW, yea land-locked public lands are super frustrating!

In addition to the Public Land layer you mentioned, Gaia HAS a Private Land layer which you can download for offline use. It even shows you the name of the land owner for the parcel on which you are located. Seriously, the tools WERE available to help prevent this situation.
@OFFTHEGRIND
@OFFTHEGRIND 4 ай бұрын
I was told that after the fact. To me I would’ve thought they would be on the same layer. The fact that it’s not is frustrating to me and more of a reason to switch. I hate all the separate layers you have to have on Gaia. Also, when I searched for that later once told about it, only Arkansas is pulled up on my phone. I haven’t checked on the web version cause for whatever reason those are different, but again, another reason to not use that. Also, my friend reported back to me that Gaia did mark this as private, but was out of date. They have had this property for 2 years and Gaia hasn’t updated. Onx has it labeled correctly

Great clip mate, well done. Whilst I live in Australia I enjoy the different perspective of your overlanding there in the US. Thanks for sharing champ 👍 Side note : I think you’ll find that machine was actually an old hay chopper silo feeder, not a plow. They were sold by John Deere back in the day but not made by them. Made by by Papec Machine Co. of Shortsville, NY. In 1901, Papec Machine Co. was established in Lima, New York by Billy Hamlin. Although some sources claim that their initial focus was on steam engine repair, the company name is a shortening of Pneumatic And Propeller Ensilage Company, which suggests that their focus was always on silo fillers. After licensing a patented ensilage cutter/filler from the Paris Plow Co., of Paris, Ontario, the company grew quickly. They outgrew their Lima facilities and in 1909 relocated to larger premises in Shortsville. With the additional room they were able to expand their catalog of products. They were almost all related to agricultural machinery in some way, but at some point they made a grinder arbor too. Here’s one out in a paddock which features the same “bone structure” as the one in your clip. www.flickr.com/photos/photo-maniac-spady/8330765091/in/photostream/lightbox/ Great clip bud and thanks again for sharing 🇦🇺👍

The old fashioned though: 2oz Bourbon of choice 3-4 dashes of bitters 1 barspoon of Maple syrup 1 Luxardo cherry with a little of the syrup I like to mix it so it is consistent throughout, then spritz a grapefruit peel over a flame.

At least the guy was pretty chill about the whole thing. I've seen situations where things went sideways really quickly and all you can do is run and hope like hell you don't get shot at on the way out. OnX is a really useful tool for determining who owns what and most of its info is pretty accurate. Gaia has been too much of a let-down and tends to be far more complex.

Gaia does actually have a "landowner" layer that you can download and turn on. While OnX has made some improvements that is getting closer to being appealing for me, i still prefer the versatility that Gaia offers. Im glad the gentleman was cool about you being on his land, but seriously if he really wanted to keep people ofc his land, a couple of No Trespassing signs at his open gate might have deterred an honest citizen such as yourself.

I’ve been told that about Gaia but I only saw one for Arkansas. That was on mobile and I know mobile and desktop are different. But that’s kinda why I switched as well. Managing all the layers in Gaia is so clunky. Onx has come a long ways since last time I used it three years ago. And the landowner and I both learned something from the experience. There were signs on the gate, but they were very small and not in an obvious spot. So he was like dang I need better signage

@OFFTHEGRIND feeling like me comment might have painted the landowner in a negative light... (apologies to landowner) it's actually cool that he willingly agreed to be on film... glad he was so cool and that it was a good experience for you both. I actually use both Gaia and OnX. I like OnX for the marked trails and routes, but I still prefer being able to have all of the info Gaia offers at my fingertips. We are fellow Washingtonians and the property layer works in my app... weird that your experience was different. Anyway... really appreciate that we have so many tools available to us. I have to say that when I’m out Overlanding, I completely leave peoples private property alone, but if it’s BLM land should never be locked in by private property. The people that surround those properties should be made to make an easement road or purchase all the land that people are not allowed to access. Everybody pays taxes, which is funding BLM, if only the people that own the land around it can access it that’s kind of bullshit.

I was wondering how that was gonna play out. Land owner seemed cool and easygoing, considering the circumstances. I know I've been, let's say, less than thrilled when a random person walks right past my no soliciting sign, knocks on the door, and tries to sell me something. Did the landowner happen to say what the point was with the camera pointing at the cave?

He was super cool. But I was also extremely nice and apologetic. I had a feeling as soon as I saw the game camera that I was not where I was supposed to be. So when I saw him tailing me, I knew what was going on. I am always respectful of others but to a different degree in this circumstance. Also, solicitors are the worst lol

I hate the thought that people can buy all the land surrounding a parcel of public land and cut off all access to it.

Yeah it really sucks. But that on the government. I’m sure that family would love to buy that portion of BLM land but the government won’t for whatever reason

Very common in America that land hoarders own bunch of land without really having a need for that. It's not like you have a house, garden, some animals and whatnot and own an acre or two or three and live there.
@OFFTHEGRIND

@@kevinstarski1598 so this family in particular has a bunch of government sponsored projects including attempting to bring an endangered species back. But I’m sure there are plenty of examples like you said that aren’t the situation and yeah it’s obnoxious. It’s also not well documented which is rough. I’m sure there’s laws but laws are useless if not enforced

Came here to say that.. Seems odd... THink the government could force a right of way for access to the public land, but that could be a hastle. Glad that guy was cool though.

It’s top secret. I definitely can’t tell you that for every 2 oz of bourbon you use one bar spoon of simple syrup and two dashes of bitters. Then a luxardo cherry with a little of the juice. And I DEFINITELY can’t tell you that 2 drops of 20% saline water will open the drink up quite a bit and compliment the sweetness.

So it's public land for those with a helicopter or a balloon. It's insane how many instances you can find here in America where land hoarders surround the blm land...how is that even allowed? I've seen instances of "no trespassing/private property" signs on gates, where in reality, the road was public only the land on the sides is private...
