David Starkey has an exceptional gift of enabling a listener to become an observer. His narration of the pageantry surrounding Tudor court celebrations creates the illusion it is happening as he speaks. Tremendous.

Feet up, glass of wine and a new episode from Dr. Starkey. Many years ago, I studied this period for A level history and actually remember the events quite well, at least in a broad brush sense, but it is fascinating to get a more detailed account.

The fascinating thing is that if Arthur had taken the throne, Henry would be looked at as one of the great missed opportunities of history as everyone who met Henry commented on what a brilliant, intelligent, attractive, charismatic, eloquent young man he was who excelled at pretty much everything he put his hand to, and we’d be remaking on what a shame it was that he never came to the throne so we could have seen what this brilliant prince could have been like as King. Just goes to show that the grass isn’t always greener.

I don't know about Arthur, but I am very happy about Henry, what he does for the world. He is, I think, important for the idea of Europe as a diverse continent of free nations

I don’t know what you two are on but what you have said is complete garbage! Henry was nothing but a greedy wasteful pig of a king, not even a real warrior like his father and grandfather Edward! He spent the wealth his father Henry VII had accumulated and was broke until after the dissolution of the monasteries whereby he effectively stole and plundered their assets which was duly spent on himself and a series of mostly failed military campaigns! The English reformation was a joke, a half hearted self serving political exercise on the foundation of list and greed, and I say half hearted because right up until his death Henry was still essentially a devout Catholic! And last but not least 72,000 people were put to death under his tyrannical reign….2% of the population of the time! The missed opportunity was Arthur not this malignancy!!!
@elss8717
@elss8717 2 жыл бұрын
@@Tawny6702 I completely agree with you. Is it really 72,000 people he put to death? Staggering. I guess we would not have the numerous films, documentaries and tv box sets about Arthur’s reign and his divorced and executed wives as we have with Henry. A villain sells well.
@dan4lau
@dan4lau 2 жыл бұрын
@@Tawny6702 Have you been reading Meyer's The Tudors? That's a smashing book. The point I think was that Henry in his youth, so handsome and strong and charming, accomplished both academically and in sports and marshal skills, would have been thought a far better potential King than Arthur, who was by contrast rather sickly and unprepossessing. When Henry came to the throne in 1509, for a while it was reckoned that the new Camelot had arrived. Henry was praised to the rooftops and for a while things really did seem to be shaping up very well. So given how Henry was looked on at the time of Arthur's death, depending on how Arthur's reign turned out of course, historians today might well lament that Henry wasn't the older son. I've a book which speculates however that had Arthur lived and become King, Prince Henry might well have become a rebellious interfeering trouble-maker who met a similar end to his great uncle George Duke of Clarence. Of course in the scenario that Arthur lived, we wouldn't know how Henry would waste the many gifts given to him by fate, being a lazy, greedy, feckless, tyranical, unjust, dishonest, mass-murdering and thoroughly disgusting monster. In short more-or-less a complete travesty of everything a King should be. Those who had even heard of Henry, even if he had become a rebel and been executed, would have said things like, "If only he'd been the elder son and become King. He would have had the opportunity for all his gifts to flourish and been a magnificent monarch."

Dear Dr. Starkey. Would you please consider doing a video on Henry VIII's sister Margaret, Queen of Scots. It's a shame she's been almost forgot outside Scotland, unlike the rest of her family, and I think her story needs to be told. If not, would you consider doing a video on the heirs of Elizabeth I. Though never officially her heir, they were presumptive and all had extraordinary lives during Elizabeth's reign, some of whom were executed by Elizabeth, while others went into obscurity. Finally, thank you for these many video essays/talks, I've deeply enjoyed them.

Considering that both of the royal marriages held at St Paul’s ended with the premature death of one of the parties involved, I don’t think there could be a more appropriate comparison between the two. There’s almost a sense of cosmic karma that the second not just royal wedding held there after Arthur and Catherine, but the Prince of Wales to boot, would similarly end in tragedy.

What I find most helpful about this is that it allows me to synchronize the Tudors with events and dynasties in a broader European theater; as soon as I realized, (and this is something I'd somehow missed,) Catherine of Aragon was a daughter of Isabella and Ferdinand a lot of other stuff came into much sharper focus.

I am now big in to this Tudor stuff since having discovered direct descent from Katherine Grey along one family line and from John Dudley Duke of Northumberland down another. More weirdly coincidental I have the same style fire-place and overly olive paint in my living room as david starkey. This video mention about Henry VII and 1549 Western uprising leaves me a bit conflicted as I have a good deal of Cornish ancestry. But bloodletting seem to have been the ordinary rather than the extraordinary - most of historic ancestors seem to have either being put in the tower, executed, killed in battle or returning that favour to someone else.

Having only recently become aware that Catherine of Aragon had an older sister, who has gone down in history as "Juana the Mad", I would love to ask Sir David if he has ever prepared a lecture on her life story. Was she really mad, or was she a pawn in a high-stake political manoeuvrings of the Holy Roman Emperor?

Dear David . I wrote an extremely long message to you and for some reason it has not been saved on your comments page. My name is also David. Dave Ashby. Musician also available on KZfaq:). I am a 63 year old Brit living in Germany. I left the Uk in my early 20’s with a very basic education with the love of life education and discovering history. I can’t tell you how much your programs have opened my mind to the discovery of history and to question it. Please forgive me for a very simplistic question but I must ask it in the hope you can give me clarification. In the movie Elizabeth The Golden Age , a suggested love triangle, seems to exist between The Queen, Bess and Raleigh. Is there any historical truth regarding this emotional drama including baby between Bess and Raleigh or is it all artistic ambiguity? I have tried so hard to find historical text to confirm or deny these statements without any luck at all. I hope that my previous message does appear somewhere on your site. In the meanwhile. Thanks so much for dedication to historical education. Warmest regards. Dave
