One of my favorites of the bunch! Hard to beat a good olive pattern and this one has it all. I’ve recently dyed some CDL in a chartreuse and olive and intend to use it as my tailing fibers, and also use a dozen or so fibers to tie and mix in with the wing, similar to your gnat pattern recently uploaded. May change the wing color to dun and cover the transition at the thorax with dubbing similar to your single feather CDL mayfly tied a year or so ago. Great ideas and a wealth of knowledge shared for all to see and pull from. The more I watch each evening, the more I learn and the more tools I have in my tool belt. Thanks for speeding my journey along and for providing a tying encyclopedia for the world to reference!

Very nice. I like these parachute variants with different wing materials; CDC, the EC caddis, etc., and the extended body without a lot of fiddling about is desirable for me. Will give this a go, soon. Probably in sulphur colours to match the local entomology. Thank you Davie.

Another great fly Davie! I've been following your channel for more than 6 years, first back in S. E. Kent in the UK and now here in the Philippines. I must admit there is very little freshwater fly fishing here what there is is mainly saltwater stuff. Once the Covid situation is sorted out here I shall have a try for Milkfish and Tilapia in some of my local fisheries Bulacan. Local anglers mainly bait fish or spin but I'm sure that flies like the a Cats Whisker or Cormorants will catch, Milkfish look as if they will give a good scrap on fly tackle. Keep on tying Davie and I'll keep watching especially anything for mullet which is the nearest British fish to a Milkfish.

I spent years in the Philippines Paul but failed to find anything suitable for fly fishing there. Good deepwater fishing off the islands for grouper, lapu-lapu etc using hand lines. Book a trip to New Zealand for amazing wild rainbow trout fly fishing if you can. Start with the North Island round Lake Tapau.

Hi Davie, what a lovely little pattern. Can you just clarify for me please: Aero wing tends to come off the card x4 ply. Given the cost of the material, do you use just one ply cut in half or two ply for the wing post? Great video by the way
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, I used two strands of the Aero-Wing to form the wing and body of the fly I tyed in the video though going smaller I would certainly reduce the amount of the Aero-Wing to get the right proportions and save the amount I use..It's also worth using similar materials like Poly-Pro and Para-Post as these will work with this pattern as well.. All the very best Davie

Very cool. So Davy that would be a BWO in the olive?
@zekragash4294
@zekragash4294 2 жыл бұрын
This would be a great pattern in olive if you have the flavs where you fish (lesser green drake). For the olives where I live, might be a tad large, perhaps the spring hatch. I might try it in an eighteen with light dun poly for the wing.
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Scott, It would probably work for the BWO but I would tye it two or three sizes smaller, I'm glad you liked the fly.. All the very best Davie..

From what I have read they see short range, magnified and in wide angle. Hard to imagine really.
@zekragash4294
@zekragash4294 2 жыл бұрын
I have often wondered that myself. Spring creeks and clear water give the fish ample time to inspect and make that decision. One evening while catching fish taking small nymphs, I thought; how do they see these things and take them in such a short window given the amount of flotsam in the water. Then I looked up and saw barn swallows over the river flying about at 20-30 mph snatching bugs and mosquitos in mid flight. They are designed for their their food sources.
@ross1458
@ross1458 2 жыл бұрын
@@zekragash4294 the river I fish the most is the Elk River in WV USA. There are times when they refuse everything for a 32. Black and Olive can even make a difference. Crazy. I’ve seen it when multiple hatches were coming off and one was a size 12 green drake. The littles must taste better. 🤪
@zekragash4294
@zekragash4294 2 жыл бұрын
@@ross1458 I am laughing out loud, I know exactly what you are saying, infuriating. I used to say that about the autumn BWOs on the Henry's. A #20 was a large fly, but the fish went nuts. Littles. During a blanket hatch once, instead of spitting the fly, I just decided to see what all of the fuss was about. It was mossy, green tasting with a hint of clover mintiness. I was able to get away with #18-20 Quigley cripples that I would fish with success right into the winter midges. Might fudge a bit with that cripple as the trailing shuck extends the profile and is of course, easy pickings for the fish. Best I can figure.
@zekragash4294
@zekragash4294 2 жыл бұрын
@@ross1458 a nod to you if you are tying and fishing 32s. The smallest hook I have in my collection is a 26 (up to 6/0 and everything between). I tried tying some midge/trico spinners on that size once and couldn't find but one by the time I got out of the house.
