Back in 2012, I worked for a couple guys that had a claim at middle fork. There were about 5 other pits operating with full crews back then. Lots of rainbow obsidian being shipped overseas to China. We sold ours for $0.74/lbs. Nothing under 2lbs and had to have color (no gray or black). Each month on average, we would wash, weigh, and bag about 20 tons of rock. We took really good care of that mountain (no heavy equipment, no hydro/pneumatic operations of any kind). Good times, plan on going there in a couple day (first time since 2012).

I just took my daughter and her friend there the day before yesterday. They had a blast! Even on the main road beneath the middens, were spectacular pieces. I would think that if they were cut very near parallel to the plane of layering and polished, the rainbow sheen would come through. Thanks for the video! We should have looked more to the left. But we'll know better next year. After Yellowstone, we were burned on driving back home. We'll come back next year for sure.

Obviously fake, you can't mine obsidian without a diamond pickaxe.

It's a reference to the video game "Minecraft", in the game obsidian can only be mined via a diamond pickaxe.

The color black consist every color of visable light spectrum hints why you find rainbow inclusions. However do not shame black obsidan as its still a beautiful stonw

Timmy Howard Sorry, but no. The rainbow obsidian color is a wee bit more complicated than that, I’m afraid. There is no rainbow to be found in the vast majority of obsidian. Or coal, or schorl, magnetite, jet, etc.

Ok... Nothing "consists" of colors. Everything reacts or doesn't react to electromagnetic radiation. If that radiation is reflected and is the correct frequency, our eyes will react to that frequency and we will sense color. So ... If it's black, it ABSORBS every wavelength of the visible portion of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum. If it's white, it REFLECTS every wavelength of the visible portion of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum. If it's red, it ABSORBS every wavelength of the visible portion of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum ACCEPT those wavelengths in the red portion of the spectrum. it ONLY reflects the red portion of the spectrum. If it's mahogany....yep, same formula If it's rainbow.... Same, same. But complicated in rainbow obsidian. The light is not only reflected, it is also refracted. Which will give us rainbows. This is called dispersion. Not all colors are always dispersed. The electric blue obsidian and pink lady are good examples of that.

Hi I found some obsidian black stone in birmingham uk and it's has got yellow inside the stone

Not exactly everything to know, I'm just saying. The reason you can't see the color is light is hitting straight on it. Needs to be chipped away to catch light at the right angle. Or you can use it in a tank with water and an overhead light, the water refracts the light, causing it to hit the obsidian at an angle showing the colors.
@RubbleRockAndGem
@RubbleRockAndGem 4 жыл бұрын
i think the video discusses cleaving it at a correct angle. and light has to hit it. i dont know what you mean by "straight on it". i could flood it with a thousand lights- as long as it is cleaved correctly, the colour will show. water isnt necessary with stones that have clean concoydal fractures.
@robertbradford3461
@robertbradford3461 4 жыл бұрын
@@RubbleRockAndGem well you have to admit, it was not everything you needed to know. As example you talked of cleaving it correctly where you could catch the colors but you don't show how. And sunlight is directional ya? All coming from one direction. Depending on time of day and on cloudy days the light is difused and coming from everywhere at once. So it hits the surface at the same time in the same direction. If it's not cleaved right you will see nothing like you said because the light doesn't hit at the right angles. But with water, it refracts light, it bends it different directions all at the same time, causing light to hit it from many different directions showing the colors.

@@RubbleRockAndGem oh and another thing, public is no longer allowed, at least for now and the near future having nothing to do with covid, all sites shit down by forestry until further notice, now when it does open back up you have to go to ANTIOCH Forestry dept to apply and get a permit, the merch store is no longer allowed to give permits, sad really, took a bunch of heavy equipment up and messed everything up and now it's closed until they get it fixed

Nice video, thank you. A few questions for you. Looks like very hard dirt to dig through and I only have a small 3 ft garden shovel, railroad spike and small hammer, will that do the trick? Next, those white spikes are peoples claims, how far do the claims go as they mark only that spot the stake is in the ground? Did you or are you allowed to go on top of the hill and into the woods to see whats up their and grab surface rocks or dig? Finally, did you go to or do you know if the actual creek/water and area has crystals, agate or anything else to find while gathering the Obsidian? Thanks a bunch. Love Chris

@@RubbleRockAndGem Thank you Adam. Did you yourself walk up the hill in the woods to see if there was anything up there on the ground level? Last thing I forgot to ask you. How is the area on the tires, is it risky as it looks and you say the glass is everywhere. Im excited to get out there and search the areas all around and the creeks and lakes there too. Thanks My Friend.

Just went the day before yesterday. No permits until July, but since we added two days to our trip for this, we weren't going to drive away without breaking a few rocks. We got some cool pictures. We'll be back in July. Side note... Since I was here, two years ago, this place has been absolutely raped! The whole hillside has been dug out at least 20 feet. It's a small wonder they aren't allowing anymore commercial permits. The greed is obvious here.
