Over 130 countries recognise Palestine as a sovereign state. The majority of the world recognise Palestine. The US don't dictate which countries are sovereign or not. International law does.

The US has been abusing its veto power for too long in the UN, and international recognition of Palestine has been formalized in most countries but the UN still refers to it as an occupied territory because of a small handful of invested parties who have too much unbalanced power without any checks on that power.

I’ve gotta say, before all this I was really losing hope in mainstream journalism and was half expecting the room to be stacked with people who would not grill the state department on these things. It has been a small blessing and relief to see that the majority of the journalists in the room end up grilling this guy over 🍉 and forcing him to reveal his agenda by asking the tough questions over and over. In addition, the US continues to veto the annual resolution regarding the state of Palestine. Palestine is a state whose territories are occupied. Part of the mandate after the fall of the Ottoman Empire was the right to self determination. This is before the partition plan at the end of WW2. This was actually argued by the Arab League before the ICJ last week. Yet only Israel was admitted to UN in 1949. A Palestine state was officially reaffirmed in the late 1980s. It was already in UN as just an observer but got upgraded as an observer state after attempting full membership. However, people still argue whether or not it is a state despite being a state.
