FF14 is the one piece of video games, "trust me it gets good bro" "Just wait for the heavensward arc" "Yes it took me 800 hours and over a year to finish the main story" "No it's not finished yet, it never will" "This is the best story in the world bro trust me, you'll like it once you've read for about a hundred hours" "Yeah FF14 is over twice as long as once piece is? problem?"

One thing to mention: Don't feel like you have to rush to be caught up for Dawntrail as it releases. The "real" raids don't release for 4 weeks after launch, with the kinda LFR-equivalent being 2 weeks after launch. So you have like 1.5 months, not 2 weeks, if you're looking to be caught up to everyone for content, and not just to be there in the massive crowds at questgivers at the start of the expansion.

@@meganclare7 Yeah, you don't need to rush especially if you're liking the story or want to experience what the game has to offer. There's lots of little things to do which build up characters and the world. Some of the "side content" are just SO GOOD. Like Stormblood for example, the trials series is excellent and the Alliance Raid is great as well and if you ever played FF Tactics then it becomes even more awesome.

Also it’s better to not rush Anyways as servers Will get congested The Devs are prepping for it tho, having been opening new servers left and right to prepare but it’s still something to consider Will it be Endwalker bad? No, not even. Will it be peak LFG Raiding, Sprouts coming through the door, and raid prep? Absolutely Give it 20 hours after the raids drop and 5 teams will have already perfected the whole raid and are about to face the harder versions And the Ultimate as if the basic release was a speed bump

however you do want to preorder for the catchup gear earrings(think old school artifact armor where there's +exp bonus on them and scales with level)... also FFXIV is different from Wow in how you get the noncurrent expacs. Wow you buy base get them all while FFXIV that's only to stormblood at the moment then buy the newest expac get everything else unlocked

@@RedzyTV This mmo is unique in terms of main story line so take your time. Ive been walking throug MS when i joined ffxiv and it took me 3 mounth or so (and i was hungry for mmo and gaming about 8 hours per day skipping almost every cutscene without voicelines ) . And btw you will get 2!!! free fantasia. Devs are adding some graphics updates to all races so they decide to give a free fantasia for those who dislike their new characters. So you can switch for a catgirl and see if you like it and if not, switch back :D Btw just in case you can switch server create new character there save apperance run for a bit (emotes are different even on m/f miqote characters same with other races. all animations on some emotes are different same as movement) and than use fantasia and load your preset. Have fun.

Please PLEASE take your time with the MSQ (story). It's been intricately woven over 10 years and is amazing. There is no need to rush to Dawntrail. I know that FOMO is a big thing, but you won't be, you won't get left behind.

While Dawntrail is starting a new arc of sorts, I don't think the 'summer vacay' vibes will hit the same without the context of what we're vacationing from. I don't feel like it's spoilers to say that the last two expansions, in particular, handled some super heavy and emotionally devastating storylines, so if you go through those you'll feel quite differently about 'getting to relax and have some fun adventures' with Dawntrail than if you just hop right in to lighthearted from the start. Hmmm, think of it like Dawntrail is a cold glass of water. It'll be nice enough if you're just chillin around the house. But it'll be outta this world bangin if you drink it right after coming in from working hard out in the hot sun. From what I've gathered from watching a bunch of streamers making the transition from WoW to FFXIV, you need to shift your mindset. I hear WoW has all the relevant, active Fun at the endgame, but in FFXIV the Fun is the journey through the story, and the payoff at each point comes from having experienced what lead up to it. Dawntrail is Season Five of a show with a continuous plot that builds on itself, so watching two episodes of Season One and then hopping to Season Five, well, you'll really be cheating yourself out of something great. All that said: Welcome to the community! I hope your journey is worthwhile. ^_^ b

Thank you for the well thought out and lovely comment! Everything you have said is very much in line with what I have come to realise (and look forward to) in the days since beginning my FFXIV / ARR journey. Whilst my little video project / idea is to see if I can get ready "in time" for Dawntrail, I am coming to FFXIV with a changed mindset, as you mentioned, from playing WoW in a speedrun + gear acquisition focus to a much more story focused and meaningful journey type of mindset. So I have since mentioned in my streams that whilst its cool for me to try consume all the story up to Dawntrail, I will NOT risk ruining it by skipping meaningful dialogue, cutscenes, or "blasting" it for the sake of it. Like you say, imagine watching the first two episodes of a show then skipping to season 5 and wondering why nothing clicks :) Thanks again for the lovely comment. Not sure I have ever had a well reasoned and mannered interaction in my KZfaq comments section hahaha! TY for the warm welcome :)

@@RedzyTV to add to the change of mindset. some people who come over from WoW tend to pick every side quest they see for leveling their character but in ff14 the msq will level you up as you go through it. so I recommend to focus on msq , job quests and any blue quests you come across. blue quest unlocks extra dungeons, raids, emotes, new area's and systems like the dye system or glamour system ( transmog ). so be on the lookout for those blue quests. anyway, enjoy the journey ^^

Thank you for the advice! That lines up with what I have come to realise (and do) since this first stream. @@RedzyTV I know you probably won't because you'd be destroying the potential months or years of content (also you said you won't skip), but a story skip is always valid if you find out you want to catch up to what other players are doing and you aren't having fun with the sub-max level content or the story doesn't grab you. That being said, it's a fairly good story and it's fantastic that people give this behemoth of 300+ hour story a shot. I still remember my WoW days(2004-2009) and that game was and always will be endgame focused. 14 is more about the journey than the destination, so do try to avoid burnout all because you want to be there at endgame content asap.

Hello and welcome to Eorzea! I know people have already expressed to enjoy your journey and take your time with it, so I'm glad it looks like you're deciding to. There's a lot of people who have had made excellent videos about coming from WoW into FFXIV that are also worth watching! Definitely don't go in with a WoW mindset, treat it as its own game and enjoy the ride and I think you'll do just fine. This community cares a lot about new players and will be as supportive as possible so you're in great hands! If you ever need help, ask for it. If raiding is your kick, I also recommend asking your viewers to help you attempt to do any possible content blind MINE (minimum ilvl synced no echo). Don't watch guides for anything! Experience it blind. MINE lets you go in at the level and gear level it was on release and experience the game as close as possible to what it was like when it was new for us too. Also do side content and take time with it too! The raids in this game also have very intricate stories that tie into the main story. I think it'll help give an appreciation and perspective for the game and how its grown. Good luck, have fun! Hopefully I can catch a stream one of these days.

I don't know exactly where your experience lies with WoW. And I know many comments will already cover the story basics like "take your time." Which is still good advice! But if you're interested in challenging and fun fight content, FF14 has that too! The best part: you don't have to reach endgame to experience it. From lvl 50 onwards you can check out Extreme Trials (post-A Realm Reborn), and from lvl 60 onwards you can also check out Savage Raids (post-Heavensward). You have the option to sync your gear down to the item level used back in the day when these fights were current. It's not a peefect recreation the further back you go, since combat basics and classes have changed heavily over time. But it's close enough to still provide a fun challenge. As a streamer, I'm sure you can find a group of 7 other people willing to give those fights a try with you, if that piques your interest!

Thank you for the info, those options sound fantastic and I'll 100% be checking them out after I finish the ARR MSQ (am already 50+ thanks to all these xp buffs). Especially like the sound of difficulty being synched close to how it was at release. That is awesome! 🙏

Ohhh and also don’t rush it. FFXIV MSQ streams are popular with players who have already done it and want a trip down memory lane or see you react to the story they loved. When Dawntrail releases none of the popular FFXIV streamers will cover it right away, usually a month or two later, because no one wants to watch a stream spoiling the story. So I would power through ARR (base game) and then take your time and really enjoy the expansions. Being cynical milk the FFXIV MSQ following you will get for as long as possible 😉

ARR isn't really TRASH, per se. It's just not very original, from a writing perspective. From a TECHNICAL perspective, they slapped that shit together in two years and made the only game so far that can actually claim to be a "WoW Killer" with a straight face. ARR has some pacing issues and a dearth of voice acting, but it's also got a whole mess of context and background foundation to the world that is critically helpful for the story moving forward. Glad to hear you're not skipping! Hope to see you someday in Dawntrail!

Honestly I am enjoying the story, characters and contextual ground work being laid by ARR sooooo much thus far. Sure there are dull moments or bits of "slog" but I think thats something to be expected when using an MMORPG as the vehicle to deliver such an epic story, especially when you take into account the (likely) importance of pacing with things that are happening in the narrative. Writing this comment as at Day 7 of my ARR journey... I am hooked, there is only FFXIV :)

It helps to remember that ARR is both 10+ years old and they made the base game while working on making 1.0 playable. MMOs have changed a lot in that time, and don't worry, after ARR ends and you enter HW, you won't have to channel a key in a door every 30 secs anymore.

Especially since my character also started in Limsa Lominsa back then. I hope you still have fun playing and don't let yourself burn out too much. As Yoshi P said: It is ok to take a break from FFXIV and come back when you feel like it.

Don't worry about rushing to get ready for Dawntrail. One thing FF14 has that most don't is that very little content ever goes 'bad'. There are systems in place that let you experience most content close to as if it were current. Some older content, like adventuring forays can lose some of the feel when most people are done with it, but they're all doable and enjoyable. Especially with a good Free Company/streamer community to help out. I recommend doing the alliance raid series and 8 man raid series for each expansion as you go along because, though they're optional content, they also contain stories and can lightly tie into the MSQ. Not required, but highly recommended.

As someone who played WoW for 10+ years in the past, you can't really treat FFXIV the same way you do WoW. I think a good way to put it is that WoW places more emphasis on the MMO in mmorpg, whereas FFXIV is more focused in the RPG. WoW is always a bumrush to the endgame to get to the "real" content, and the story is mostly just fuel for a cool cutscene here or there. FFXIV exists for the story, first and foremost. ARR is unfortunately quite slow, but it establishes a lot of critical world building that every expansion builds off of. Every expansion is a continuation from the last, and you couldn't just skip an expansion anymore than you could skip an arc in One Piece. There are story-critical dungeons and raids that push the game's storyline further, that are unskippable, because of their necessity to the plot. And understand when i say "unskippable," I don't mean "it would be a shame of you missed it." I mean that it is literally mandatory part od the MSQ to progress, and the only way you can skip it is if you pay money in the online shop, which the devs have said they do not want you to do lol. This is obviously a direct contradiction to WoW, which practically overwrites it's own story with every expansion. Every raid tier is functionally wiped out of existence not just from the gearing perspective, but from the narrative perspective as well. I dont say this to shit on WoW, theres something to be said for the whole community to be fully focused on the same content at the same time. But to try to rush FFXIV's story to get to the "real game" like you would in WoW is just cheating yourself out of some great content, storywise and dungeon/raid-wise.

From a Vet from the ARR PS3 beta era, just enjoy the ride that is the MSQ and take your time. Seen far too many people burn themselves out trying to rush to the end game just to fall out of the game somewhere in between Post ARR and Main MSQ Heavenward. Also if you haven't seen the trailer for Heavensward, Stormblood, ect, save them for when starting those bits of the story to reinforce those parts of the journey. I don´t know if anyone has told you by this point but "Tia" isnt actually a last name! "Tia" and "Nunh" are basically titles in the suncat culture, with Nunh's generally being the leader of the group and generally the only one allowed to actively procreate(though I DO recall the notion has slightly changed in more recent mentions of it ,so that its implied Tia's can procreate just fine,Nunh however do remain a title reserved for the leaders!). Tias are well, all the suncats that are not that,so Tia's are way more common The ACTUAL tribes suncats belong to are actually indicated by the First letter of their name ,So Y'Shtola for example would be part of the Y tribe (theres a list out there specifying what these mean too, each letter corresponds with a different animal,Y in this case would be Jaguar, and the Y is pronounced as "Yah"). Meaning, her actual first name is Shtola! I don´t remember if we have actual specifics on the "last names" of female suncats though.

I'm actually of the opinion that there is no point in rushing through for some imaginary FOMO. Once you reach end game, you have 4 fight to farm forever and maybe an ultimate. The 4 fights give you gear that only ever serve you in those same 4 fights and ultimate. Once the next tier come out, said gear is invalidated by better much easier to access gear from crafting or catchup content. It's just a hamster wheel of gear. If you are here for the hard raids, learning and doing the fight, ff14 sync system (that is much better than wow btw) mean even the old fight in the base game are, while not the same as it was on release, still challenging enough that it can take a large number of attempts to clear some of them. Once you reach level 50 and each 10 level from there on, you get 12 raid fight + several extreme to prog. The main issue is to find a group to play with, but it's usually a bit easier for streamers. It will also be a distraction from the MSQ. As some other have said here, even if you are a story nerd, going MSQ 8+ hours a days for week on end can be rough. MSQ have very little combat or difficult content in general. Doing that take a while tho. For example, some streamers that started around January are still not caught up yet despite playing several days a week. Just a single ultimate in itself can take several dozens of hours, more if you are playing it without watching guides.

You should read the quest you do even if its job/class quests. I know "WoW brain" has trained one to klick through it but once you forced yourself to read them you see the story build around you. Most npcs live in the world, you will encoutner them again in the future and notice their own stories evolve, if you pay attention. Even the little npcs sitting before a dungeon can have long questlines in the future. Noticing them and seeing them throughout the 500 hours of story is a delight. That is the strong suit of this game. Also you trying to power level is quite amusing. I bet you found out already that everyhting is locked by MSQ and blue quests and your actual job level is rather inconsequential. Don't be worried for me, my world didn't halt and I am fine with basic maths ;) I simply wanted to test if ChatGPT could provide an interesting launch point for KZfaq content... such as a title like "I proved Chat GPT wrong & completed FFXIV", etc. Thank you for the warm welcome and for the useful information re XP & Jobs. That is something I was discussing on stream last night and its great to know the barriers for job switching aren't as daunting as I first thought!

The story is great! But honestly, even if you blast through the MSQ, and enjoy every second of it, you're gonna be so burnt out on story content by Dawntrail that reading another dialog box is gonna make you sick. I'm personally not opposed to story skipping, and doing the story later on New Game+, especially if you want to be current on release. But many people don't feel the same way, especially if you bounce off the game. Some of the biggest FF14 raiders **cough-xeems-cough** never even did the story till their audience bullied them into NG+-ing it.

Super good point, I do NOT want to burn out on FFXIV or the MSQ before I even get properly started. I am thinking about taking tactical breaks from the MSQ and doing a lot of blue quests / side quests / exploration / crafting ... the list goes on. It blows my mind how much is in the game, its a work of art!

So a note on end game in ffxiv, every other patch in the expansion cycle, the X.0 X.2 and X.4 basically hard reset the end game progression, so even if you miss the savage launch that will be at the end of July, you'll still have a few months to get ready and preped for new raids later in the year. Its just a matter of having some crafted gear made.

Thank you for the kind and supportive words Mizuame. I am glad that my fair and honest approach has come across as I had hoped it would. By being honest and researching to have a better understanding before I start the game, I hoped that it would not only help me set expectations for myself, but also the viewers. I also did not want to make it all about me (in a selfish way) and more about the experience / journey. I hope you enjoy my journey as much as I do, thank you for watching and the support! :)

I see that you’ve hit the end of 2.0 and people have definitely already said this, but when Dawntrail drops, the streamers I’ll be watching are the ones who are behind me in content. I don’t want to spoil myself watching the story before I can play it! So you’re almost at an advantage being so behind. FFXIV is like binging a very long, very good show or anime, like one piece, so enjoy it.

Bruh I subbed here and Followed on Twitch. I'm gonna start catching up on the VODS. Welcome to the game and the community! Totally unsolicited advice: 1. Take your time and play it at your own pace! The games not going anywhere don't worry about "catching up". There's basically no such thing on this game for the most part. 2. Don't play it like WoW. Do the flaming MSQ quests and the Blue/Blue with + Missions (those unlock new features, Jobs, etc) 3. Find a buddy that's already been playing the game for awhile and ask them for any tips on how to set up hot bars, macro's, and how to use and read your map. 4. Enjoy!

Biggest hiccup imo is the difficulty of the game is very welcoming to new players. Expect difficulty to be bar none until you're doing endgame high difficulty raids. if you're a Damage dealer, just don't show your parser on screen. because that helps things feel a little less drab in the easy dungeons you'll be playing through.

Last stream I spent an hour or so progging on Ultima's Bane MINE blind - it was SO much fun and honestly the introduction of more difficult content to experience after rolling credits on 2.0 has been great. I think for seasoned MMORPG players the game could do a better job of explaining that you can increase difficulty a little using the MINE settings if you wanted to. A friend of mine who has started playing recently is complaining of zero difficulty, think its really a mindset thing more than anything!

The cheese and wine questline is very divisive. No, this is not a joke. I think it is one of the two biggest filters in the game. (The other is the ARR patch MSQ.) Anyway, hope you enjoy FFXIV. If you do end up skipping any of the MSQ, you can always go back and do it with New Game+. The x.55 patch is usually mandatory for understanding the context of the following expansion.

People tell you that it gets good after ARR and thats true, but its only because ARR is there to set everything up. @ExileTwilight

I mean you certainly can do it that way, but in my opinion watching a lore/story summary ruins the emotional payoffs of one of the best rpg storylines. Sure you can replay it later, but will you really experience it yourself if you already know what happens? Does it have flaws? yes of course, severe limitations due to being a MMO separated by expansions etc. But well worth experiencing.
@tciddados

If he did that, I would honestly say he should just wait until Dawntrail, so he would be able to buy the new "skip to dawntrail" boost that would be in the shop. That way he skips to the new story, rather than skipping to the climax of the old story, where he'd get a bunch of random spoilers for when/if he ever goes back to do it from the start. But yeah, I'd still recommend against skipping at all, because reading the cliffs notes version of a story kind of ruins it, imo.
@RedzyTV

The skip and do new game + route has been mentioned to me at some point in the recent streams (its all blurring into one haha!), and whilst it could be useful - I think I am going to stick with playing through the expansions and stories first hand, so that I get the emotional connection and pacing that is likely intended for letting story beats sit / hit / etc. TYVM for letting me know about this though, I am new and there is A LOT going on in FFXIV :)
