Day 190: Receiving Holy Communion - The Catechism in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz)

  Рет қаралды 43,836

The Catechism in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz)

Жыл бұрын

This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB.
📖 Follow along with the official Catechism in a Year Reading Plan (AscensionPress.com/CIY)
The Catechism goes over the prerequisites to receiving Jesus in the Eucharist, as well as how often the faithful can and should receive him. Fr. Mike ensures that we understand the gravity of our obligation to go to the sacrament of Reconciliation before receiving Communion. As St. Paul said, “Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord.” Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 1384-1390.
Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.
Ascension is committed to creating media that helps Catholics grow in their faith. Catechism in a Year promises to do just that - that’s why, no matter what, we’re making it. Reconciliation - confession is the key here. It helps us to have communion without guilt at anytime. Let's cultivate this privilege of receiving God's mercy at confession. We shouldn't be ashamed to reveal our illness to our house doctor. May the Holy Spirit grant us courage to confess our sin. Thank you Father Mike for insisting on this aspect of our Christian life. Blessed Sunday to you and to the CIY Family. United in love and in prayer.

The Church obliges the faithful to participate at the Holy Mass every Sunday and on holy days of obligation. To receive the Holy Communion, one must be incorporated into the Catholic Church and be in a state of grace. Anyone who is conscious of having committed a grave sin must first receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation before going to Communion. Also important is the observance of the fast prescribed by the Church and an appropriate disposition of the body (gesture and dress) as a sign of respect for Christ. Restore, Reconcile, Receive. 🙏

I was taught that if the person is not able to receive Jesus fully, they can still come and receive a blessing, signified by crossing their arms across their heart, and the priest will bestow a blessing. Is that still right? God bless you and accept our prayers for you, Fr. Mike and all CIY people.

I know what it's like to receive unmerited goodness, I don't want to be the priest who walks past the robbed and abused man, I want to be the good Samaritan, the widow whose two pennies gave her glory in heaven. I want Jesus to recognize me in my last hour, to tell me my last hour was my first hour towards eternity with Him. For me and all participating in CIY: most precious blood of Jesus Christ, save us and the whole world.❤ Amen.

Lord Jesus, I thank you for nourishing my soul with your Body and Blood. You have given me the gift of yourself in the Eucharist, and I am grateful for your presence within me. May the grace of this sacrament strengthen me in faith, increase my love for you and others, and help me to live as a witness to your Gospel. Lord, I offer you my joys and sorrows, my hopes and fears, my successes and failures. Take everything I am and have, and unite it with your sacrifice on the cross. Blessed Mother Mary, help me to imitate your humility and trust in God's plan. Guide me to be a faithful disciple of your Son, and intercede for me that I may grow in holiness. Holy Spirit, fill me with your wisdom and courage, that I may bear witness to Christ in all that I do and say. Guide me in the path of righteousness and grant me the strength to live according to your will. Lord Jesus, may the grace I have received in this sacrament transform me from within and lead me closer to you. May I be a living tabernacle, carrying your presence into the world. I offer this prayer of thanksgiving through Christ our Lord. Amen.🙏💌

Thank you Father Mike! Thank you God for all your Love and mercy!🙏❤️ How many times can a person receive Holy Communion in one day? A Catholic can receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist at the most, 2 times per day, if certain conditions are met. You may receive Holy Communion when: You attend your two separate celebrations of the Holy Mass on the same day. [Canon Law # 917; C.C.C. # 1388] You attend a regular daily Holy Mass and a funeral during which there is a Eucharistic celebration. You attend a regular daily Holy Mass and a wedding during which there is a Eucharistic celebration. You attend a regular daily Holy Mass and receive the Last Rites (Anointing of the Sick). You attend a regular daily Holy Mass and a Vigil Holy Mass on the same day. If a Catholic has already received the Sacrament of Holy Communion during the day and he is facing the danger of death, during the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick (Last Rites), he can once more receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist on the same day. But, he cannot receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist twice on the same day through the administration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. “Christ’s faithful who are in danger of death, from whatever cause, are to be strengthened by Holy Communion as Viaticum.” (Canon Law # 921 §1)

We often say that the worst thing that can happen in a person’s life is for them to die young. But if God is taking them out of the world because they will commit a heinous mortal sin later, then it is an act ofGod’s mercy. It is better to be in heaven earlier than in hell later for all eternity.

Its a matter of our souls, a matter of life and death, a matter of eternity - to live contrary to the Faith. I'm taking the middle road - recognise my own sinfulness, the Lord's truth, beauty and goodness in the Eucharist and that he still invites me to come to him, by preparing myself by confession and drawing near to him, boldly, to savour his true presence and be healed.😊

No one patches an old cloak with a piece of unshrunken cloth, for its fullness pulls away from the cloak and the tear gets worse. People do not put new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined. Rather, they pour new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.” Matthew 9:16-17 The parable above teaches us that even if someone were to faithfully understand and live the authentic Law that was given through Moses and the prophets, Jesus’ new teaching of grace, the New Law, was so different that it was not simply an improvement of the old, it completely replaced it. To use a modern example, if you were to have an old phone that had become obsolete or stopped working, you wouldn’t buy a new phone so as to remove various parts from it to try to add those parts to the old phone to fix it. Instead, you use the new phone as a complete replacement for the old one. Therefore, by embracing this New Law, we become entirely new creations in Christ. Grace doesn’t simply patch that which is weak and sinful in us. It transforms us, elevating our human nature to an entirely new existence. Today, we not only receive the new life of grace in Baptism, but we also receive it anew and share in this ongoing transforming renewal every time we allow grace to touch us more deeply and transform us more fully into the people God wants us to be. Discovering the New Law of grace, accepting it into your life, and allowing it to transform you will set you on a path of discovery that will never get old. It is an ongoing discovery that is far greater than anything this world has to offer. Nothing can ever compare to the Gift of God alive in our lives. It will never get old. It will always be transforming. And It will always be new. Ponder this Gift God offers you today and say “Yes” to It with all your heart. For the intentions of the entire CIY community and ALL of our brothers and sisters in need of prayer, worldwide, both now and in the future: My transforming Lord, You continuously offer to renew me, transform me and elevate me to the life of grace. I thank You for this Gift and desire to accept it with all my heart. May I always be ready and willing to say “Yes” to You and the transformation that awaits me as I discover this ever new treasure of Your Grace. Jesus, I trust in You. Lord I ask this in the Amazing Name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen. (KB)🙏❤🙏

JESUS THE VIVIFIER; OUR METAMORPHIS of our old skins; wine poured into us: The Creator walking among us. ADAM DID NOT COUNT TO BE CALLED THE FIRST MAN: As the human race: We do not count to be called; older than Jesus; - as human beings that were in exile since; Adam and Eve; belonging to the wretched Man mountains VS CALVARY HILLS. We are separated from Jesus by the piercing of His heart; we are twins by a few minutes; FROM HIS SIDE. We all have the same birthday as Jesus and are Firstborn with Jesus. Jesus owns the well of Salvation. Does the oldest own the fountain of Living Water. The younger ones ask him: Can I have some of your Living Water? - The woman at the well. It is NOT Jesus asking us that question; like I am thirsty; please give me of your water... even though he became Man; like us. But we were in our shell needing to shed it. And Jesus was the first to show us how to use metamorphosis; and taught us the Word of God; and we metamorphosized into changing from: a worm to a Butterfly. Jesus changed First on Calvary; then we changed with Him; when they pierced His side: and all the butterflies came out of Him; - US. We were crucified with Jesus; therefore, we are all in the SAME CHURCH; THE FIRSTBORN CHURCH. Church Militant, Church Suffering; Church Victorious: AND THOUGH WE CHRISTIANS EXISTED FOR 2000 YEARS; WE ARE ALL METAMORPHISIZING INDIVIDUALLY OUT OF OUR BODIES; WE ARE ALL: THE CONTINUATION OF THE FIRST RESURRECTION. THERE IS NO SUCH A THING AS THE SECOND RESURRECTION. OUR OLD SKINS WILL BE CHANGED AND BE RAISED FROM THE DEAD TOO; in the DAY OF REDEMPTION OF THE BODY; THE LAST DAYS. John 4:10, Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. THE FIRST BORN WHO GIVES; ALREADY EXPLAINED. 1 THESSALONIANS 4: 16For the Lord himself, with a word of command, with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God, will come down from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. How does that action of - first; correlate? Jesus was the first to rise from the dead; so, we do not raise to heaven first; who are alive. Everything dove tails. I found this essay of mine.

Thank you Fr Mike, for pointing out what very few priests or bishops point out. But there is another "bigger deal sin" you could have pointed out, that is huge. How about pro-abortion politicians - especially those claiming to be "devout Catholics" - receiving the Eucharist without a word of criticism from their bishops? And how about Catholics who... vote for them?

Sometimes I wonder if I numbed myself earlier in life, causing damage to my conscience. I think it could be emotional numbing but also ingratitude. I go to Confession and have experienced great comfort but perhaps the damage may be done. Oh Dear Lord, have Mercy on me a sinner.

Purify us, oh Lord. Cleanse us from within. Make us holy. I sometimes wonder whether I should present myself for Communion when I’m not 100% certain about a sin or whether it’s grave and whether or not I was in full knowledge and did it anyway but I also have concerns that if I stop receiving due to that uncertainty I might bring false judgement upon myself and never receive reconciliation or Holy Communion again.

I always worry with fear every time I go up to receive the Eucharist. I struggle with scrupulous so even if I went to Confession before Mass I still think that I am receiving unworthily and putting judgement upon myself like 1 Corinthians 11:27-29.

Just remember that temptation, however strong, is not sin. As long as you don't yield to contracting the sin and resist it, you're actually growing in virtue which is God's will. It may also help to bring Jesus into the midst of your struggles, using your faith and imagination. Imagine Jesus with you and take His hand. After all, He is already present with you. Focus on His sacred heart, not on the temptation. It will disappear like a mirage. Inasmuch as it may stubbornly remain, keep your eyes on Christ. Persevere and you can walk on water like Saint Peter. Then you're free. :)

I have struggled with this also, I don't think any of us could ever be worthy (knowing our brokenness), but I trust in Christ to bring to mind anything I should be aware of beforehand. I know that through ignorance and lack of really examining myself that I have received unworthily in the past (it is amazing how ignorant I am lol) but I have since tried to confess any sin I might not have appreciated as mortal in the past. All in all, I would rather have this holy fear of receiving Jesus instead of having a deadened (or lazy) conscience. I would suggest you just really pray each time, I am sure that Jesus would help bring to light whatever sins you must confess with a sincere desire and prayer. In the meantime, trust, pray, and don't worry. (I think Padre Pio said that)

July 9, 2023 pray for Souls in Purgatory. Go ahead, just take about 30 seconds to help save a soul that maybe is your family member or friend! Go forth and help save! Here is the prayer: (According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory.) The Prayer of St. Gertrude Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family.
Amen. God would reply to St. Gertrude that He would use whatever was offered to Him for the faithful departed, according to His inclination to show pardon & mercy.

Some of the "bigger deal sins"? Well said, Fr Mike! And the fact that you raise their going to Communion in the meantime also needs to be confessed is excellent pastorally. With the lack of faith among Catholics about what the Eucharist is? The fact that very few go to confession as a matter of course? Thousands of Catholics must be committing this sin without even realizing it.

I was pointed out by a Protestant who I informed to read John 6 and he relied it doesn't say anything about wine or the word Eucharist. Then it occurred to me as I reread the passage it doesn't and this explained the teaching, in order to have living flesh there must be a source of blood. Jesus said He is the living bread come down from heaven thus receiving under the one species of bread is suffice even though at the Last Supper He says of the wine that it is His Blood. So though under both species it better resembles the feast of the memorial, receiving under the one species of bread is all that's required and the Church wisely teaches this. O the wisdom of mother Church so as we enter her bosom and connect ourselves to take part in the memorial of Jesus and sacrificial feast let us observe that one species is sufficient.

The tragedy is that in the 30 years of going to mass almost every day and even going to multiple parishes in my area, I have never heard about not receiving communion if one is in the state of mortal sin. (We don't even hear about mortal sin.) Perhaps priests and bishops either also are ignorant of these teachings or they are cowards. I don't judge them, but remain perplexed that, if they are really to be authentic spiritual shepherds, why don't we hear this. Father Mike, perhaps you can counsel your fellow priests and any bishops and spread this teaching throughout the world.

Fr Mike you referenced people receiving eucharist when divorced and in relationship with another etc but surely those couples who are not married but living as though they are would fall into this category too 😔
@marinebulldog0309

Nope...those living in the same house can write ✍️ a letter to the priest SIGNED stating they will abstain from having sex. Furthermore, if one is divorced and the marriage hasn't been annulled and one is receiving the eucharist....the deepest parts of hell awaits that soul. If one is married by the courts but not by the Catholic church and living together and having sex ...hell awaits them as well.

Certainly this is crippling the church in Ireland and it's divisive ! Courtship is seen as an outdated concept but couples will need to endure each other for half a lifetime . I know l sound cynical. Love is blind for a honeymoon period. One young woman l know was boasting that her fiancé got down on his knee to propose on top of the Empire State building. Charity forbade any reply. She had been his common law wife for two years !

Yes they do fall into the same category The Catholic Church is very clear that you cannot live with someone as a married couple without being married or as it is called "Living in sin" I have never heard of a priest signing a letter stating that he allows a couple to live together if they say they will abstain from sex. That is just as my mother would have said "putting yourself in moral danger" and is not part of the Catholic Doctrines of the church.

Fr. Mike, I routinely worry that I may have committed a mortal sin either without realizing it or without realizing its grave nature. I also worry that I am either underestimating or overestimating the nature of a sin. Take for example the sin of lust. Sometimes I have involuntary lustful thoughts, I'm told this is quite common, and I worry that I fail to adequately resist/dismiss them. At the same time I consider that it has been less than a full year since I've returned to the faith after a lapse of more than a decade in which habitual lust was normal to me, and I know that the state of fighting and overcoming an addiction is a known mitigating factor of mortal sin.

Oh my goodness dear one of God. He is so pleased that you are truly making an attempt and have the desire to get this right. That alone shows your love for Him. Never give up because He never gives up on you. You'll get there. The more you can receive the Sacrament of Confession the stronger you will become against the vices in your life. Bad habits are always hard to break and good habits can be hard to keep. You were a lost sheep and have been found. I'll pray for your fight in this matter. We can beat ourselves up pretty good when we stumble over and over. Just keep getting up and starting over. Even if you have to do it everyday. It always makes me joyful to read that a person has returned to the Faith, because I've got loved ones I've been praying for for years to return. You give me hope. God bless you!! 🙏🤲🙏💕💖💝

Mortal sin requires, among other things, full awareness - by definition one can’t commit a mortal sin inadvertently. However, being inadvertent of what one should be aware of can itself be a sin (of omission) and possibly a mortal sin (when one knowingly and deliberately decides not to take reasonable precautions in a grave matter). For example: if you are a responsible driver, yet due to a freak event you lose control and cause a deadly accident, you didn’t commit a sin, let alone a mortal sin - civil justice will also find you not guilty of anything in this case. On the contrary reckless driving can be a mortal sin even if you manage not to hurt anyone. Similarly, having evil thoughts is not sin per se but a consequence of sin (it’s part of our fallen nature) - what matters is what one does with these thoughts: indulge in them and act on them, or fight against them and pray for help? As for evaluating the gravity of sin - this is where a confessor or a spiritual director can help. Please keep in mind that God is not an accountant - He is glad to forgive the worst sinner, yet He doesn’t deserve to be rejected through even the smallest sin.

Day 190 _Today's story about this person Voltaire was so heartbreaking and yet such an eye opener_ Back in the 18th century, a young man wrote to Voltaire, the famous French philosopher of the Enlightenment, to tell him about a problem he was experiencing. He said that he desperately wanted to become an atheist, curse God, despise the Church, and renounce his Catholic faith-as Voltaire was exhorting people to do Voltaire was not a friend of Christians and hated the Catholic Church Voltaire said, “Commit a bunch of mortal sins, and then keep receiving Holy Communion, and that will cure you of this pinprick of conscience that tells you that you’ve done something wrong.” The young man ends up doing that until his conscience was numb and destroyed 😔

When you see the short confession lines and everyone at Mass taking communion, you can be sure there are many doing so in mortal sin. My opinion though is if a person confessed to God and is contrite in heart is not unworthy even if they have not gone to confession.

If the people in grave sin do not have knowledge that they are in sin, then it does not constitute "mortal sin" for them... I think so many people just don't even know.... some may know and not care, now that is a big problem!

If that's the case about unconsecrated hands, then that would put an end to extraordinary Eucharistic ministers. The ladies may be upset about this and complain to their bishop who must please them and so nothing would happen anyways in the end. I've been told that Vatican 2 allows for the laity to be ministers. I was at one mass where they even broke the host on the altar.
