Penultimate part of our series, the top arm remains the part that can bring everything down still. Ideas to look for, exercises to do. Enjoy!

Hi Ivan!! Thanks again for the great videos!! I wonder if you've got some examples of drills we can add to our (water) training sessions in order to enhanced and imprint these technique tips...?

Ivan, Thanks very much for the help from these videos and your other ones. I refer to the techniques offer when paddling. Very clear. One question, I notice some strong paddlers seen to have a slight infinity shape, of the hands or paddle center, at the shift switches across the body. In your video you explain the necessity of the locked to hand to the opposite shoulder. So rather would the drop of the top hand be allowed from the compression from the shoulder to the opposite hip and the exit of the paddle? Or (+?) Should the hands always maintain the same horizontal plane as they cross the centerline. Maybe answered here: 8:15 - 8:30 & 9:20 - 9:29 Compared to: 9:40 - 10:05 + 11:00 & 11:50 -12:06 Not referencing 12:25 - 12:40 Was she attempting to hit you on the head with the paddle? 10:22? Thanks again for all your hard work in producing these vids. :Dennis in Bellingham, WA

Gold standard technique videos thanks Ivan. Could you clarify: we are looking for the beautiful J shape in our blade path. IF I rotate about an axis, my tail bone or similar and my arms are always fixed, why won't I produce a C shape or arc.
@ultimatekayaks64996 ай бұрын
I’m finding it really hard to explain! During the first part of the pull, until the hand is at its lowest point the blade is held close to the boat (picture a swimming stroke) only when the hand gets to that low point does it begin to mouth away from the boat.

Catching the series a little late. Immensely helpful tutorials. The weakest part of my stroke is the catch because I still punch forward with my upper arm. It's a bad habit I'm trying to break.

How could I relax my shoulders in my upper body while paddling every time I try to put it to the power I tend to tense up too much not too sure how to relax yet while paddling hard
@jon-jaynaeole95854 жыл бұрын
It's been a major problem for me I actually paddle surfski 6 times a week 5 times a week but I still can't learn to relax I'm trying when I go nice and slow I relax but when I pick up speed I put my car at 10 to stop and get too tight what should I do

Hi Ivan, one thing I continue to struggle with is dropping the top arm (strangely just the left) at the end of the stroke. If I keep the “frame” still neither arm will move but it results in a round path of the blade. If I drop the bottom arm down by my side through the early part of the stroke to keep a straighter path prior to a wide exit then it seems my top arm has to move as well as the frame can’t alter geometry in just one place. Thoughts?

Ivan, would you consider addressing the paddle feathering and the wrist movement to accommodate it? What angle do you recommend for beginner paddlers? How should it develop as they make progress? Thank you for this excellent coaching series!
@ultimatekayaks64994 жыл бұрын
Perhaps this is something we could cover in a future video. If you are having to consciously use wrist movement then then probably reducing feather is a good idea. ALL movements in this should feel natural. Some very well respected coaches advocate a zero feather and for compelling reasons. I am an old dog though and new tricks are often a step too far for me. "Standard" feather has reduced from 90 degrees to 60 over the years and I can see it reducing further. As a beginner I would go with comfort over anything else. If you really struggle with any angle at all then don't be shy of trying left handed. I am right handed in life but left feathered in paddling.
@canbe968910 ай бұрын
Wow, thank you so much Ivan. Terrific videos. I've been trying to work out what feather to use and tried reducing it from about 45 degrees to -10 a couple of days ago after realising I didn't have to rotate the paddle if I did this. However I took a swim after messing up a support stroke after about 5 minutes and changed the angle to around +10. It felt a lot better after another hour of paddling. I noticed I still have to rotate the paddle a tiny bit though so might swap it to zero as suggested above. I'm 52yrs old and like the idea of reducing wear and tear in my wrists. In your first video you mentioned you might do a video on the foot strap. I gather these sort of straps and pull bars can give additional stability. I have an old second hand boat with pedals so might try to add some kind of strap. I wonder if it might even make it possible to roll my racing K1 but imagine stopping the roll might be the biggest challenge.@@ultimatekayaks6499

Thank you very much for these valuable tips. Let me ask, however, about one additional aspect. Namely, what about the position of the wrist? I have noticed that there can be quite a bit of variation in that regard. Some people have the wrist well bent so that the wrist moves under the shaft and sort of leads the way of the movement of the top hand. Others position their wriste behind the shaft. What would be the correct positioning of the wrist?
@ultimatekayaks64992 жыл бұрын
For me the wrist would be straight. It just reduces the risk of potential injuries.

Thanks for the great advice. Do you have any thoughts on what could cause your forearms to “seize” up/ cramp, particularly when you are going hard?
@ultimatekayaks64994 жыл бұрын
Watch number 6. Two options. The first is pulling too much. The second is a paddle that doesn’t work for you.
