What a great video. Absolutely, why just hike for speed, and not really take in the beauty and take time to enjoy those special moments. Awesome to see that if you like longer lunch breaks, to not feel bad to take them. Exactly, never forget, like you said, to smell the roses. You never know if you will ever come back to those spots again. We just love how determined and with a smile "Birdcall" does his paintings, and you writing the book. What a wonderful way to capture, in addition to your videos, this great adventure. We will definitely buy your book and hopefully a painting. I get the attachment. On my first thru in 21 I wore an exofficio sun hoodie. It was bullet proof and did not smell like ass after only a few days. I wore it again from Campo in 22 and finally had to say goodbye in Mammoth Lakes. I will admit to you hear and now....and you are the first to hear this. I made a small goodbye video to let my old friend go. I hope your hat stays with you to the finish, but if not then let it go with dignity however you see fit.....😅

By the time you get this, about 10 days have passed since this episode was recorded... thought I would share this anyway, hope it helps. I heard another hiker say something she tells herself when times get tough... She imagines her 8 year old self and her 80 year old self cheering her on. Be good to yourselves and be patient with yourselves!

I would be very interested in purchasing some art from Birdcall. I live in Oregon and am very interested in someone capturing the un rendered splendor of Three Fingered Jack. The PCT runs right by it. He is a fantastic artist and having a piece from fellow hiker trash would be that more sweet. His work is amazing. Please let me know if he is interested.

Meh…….if the hat gets a little too rough, get yourself some gorilla glue and she’ll be good as new! I totally understand the sentimental fondness and attachment you have to your hat…..it hasn’t failed you yet!

On the story about the PCT I listened to, the author speaks of the ‘North Cal Blues’, I think as an anticlimax after the Sierra. However like you she decided that she could put it behind her and choose to be happy. There is plenty of beautiful scenery and wonderful experiences to be had on your adventure and I’m so happy to be coming along😊
