No tillage is a mindset thing, a ploughed and cultivated field looks the part and looks like your giving your crop the best start but the unnecessary expense of time and money when you can get the same result by direct drilling it’s a no brainier 👍🏻

Here in Aus we went into a no-till system in 2006 as a way to reduce the risk of soil drift during the summer/autumn months. The 7" sweeps just left the ground too light and fluffy and acctually caused a hardpan compaction layer. Since the switch to a knife point presswheel system we have increased our water use efficiency and grown our biggest crops ever. The biggest issue we have now is farmers not rotating chemical groups and modes of action spraying. They're sticking with what they know or is cheap and now we're starting to see chemical resistance in problematic weeds making current chemical applications useless. This is an area of farming where more awareness and training needs to made as spraying is the most technical part of our cropping system today.

I’m not a farmer (although I am going back in to agri this year) I’m a part time gardener, Iv have much better weed control from my no dig properties than the ones I dig over. It’s much less work but it pays off in the long run. It’s also a big help if you can catch weeds before they go to head. Keep up the good work 👍🏼

I totally agree with you I've had the autumn calvers out with the couple of days that have been dry they say it can't be done but a tenners wort of white twine sorted the problem our winter wheat is dying in the slob after ploughing that's why am will to bite the bullet n buy a drill for the spring n use it for grass stitching as well

Here in Angus in Scotland we see way more direct drilling than we seen just a few years ago, the only negative I have seen is that a few farms around us are cutting down on the amount of workers they employ because of the lack work they do now, I know it's the way forward for nearly all farms but it's just a shame it can come at a cost to some farm workers not being needed anymore.

There is a lot of mixed information about direct drilling and I think that puts a lot of farmers off. You have people saying you get lower yields and people saying higher yields. People saying less soil erosion and people saying more. The only thing everyone agrees on is that it uses less diesel

Good luck trying to grow a successful root crop on land like we have around here without ploughing, you end up with a field of misshaped virtually worthless rejects, as the crop whether it be carrots, parsnips, or whatever can't make their way through the hard ground, end up stunted & miss shaped & rejected. It may work for cereals, but it doesn't work for every crop & application & every land type. It's been tried & tested. Think of it this way, plant carrot seed in 50mm (2") of topsoil on top of concrete, what happens when the growing carrots hit the concrete?

There's a saying that the two best days owning an aircraft are the day you get it, and the day you get rid of it. Buying it is the easy bit. Keeping it going is the hard (and expensive!) part. Unless Rob is thinking of getting a aircraft engineer's license, I'd say stick with Bateman! Also, the David Brown restoration is great. If you were looking to put something together for Christmas etc, putting all the clips since the work on that tractor started together would make great viewing. Keep up the good work

Nothing wrong with both methods of establishment. It’s not ploughing that’s causing climate change it’s all the planes and helicopters in the sky that’s the problem look at the carbon on the helicopter 😂. The extra spraying and re drilling bits makes me wonder about min till ,ok in dry years.

100% today working on hobby tractor in the sun. I think that sometimes you can make statements that are too generalised which can get peoples back up, while I agree that within the general arable world there is great potential with min till and direct drilling and we are selves have tried direct drilled a reseed of a grass ley however I can’t see how ploughing or deep cultivation can be avoided for root vegetables and many horticultural crops such as brassicas can’t be transplanted into a previous crop residues plus such crops are very difficult to keep weed free without hoes which requires a cultivated seed bed so for the time being both systems still have there place. Great video from Saddleworth

That's debatable. Look at Andrew ward channel. He's had a great harvest of beet. I know that's only one person but take a look and if you've a better crop this year by ploughing let me know. Please remember i'm not meaning to be an arse.

What Andrew Ward does is neither direct drilling or min till. If you have 400 odd hp pulling a cultivator 300mm deep it is non inversion tillage and moves just as much soil as ploughing
