Trash pickup is so satisfying! But frustrating that it needs to be done...

It definitely had its problems though, for example, overly dramatised statistics which in most cases weren't referenced (for example, the main statistic of 'there will be no fish from the ocean by 2048' was cited from a 2006 paper where the authors have since retracted this statement, and is thus false), and also hints of white saviourism and lack of BIPOC scientists. Personally, I found they brushed over a lot of things so quickly to try and cram it all in? I also feel like it was very over sensationalised, which works to get the general population thinking more about these issues but doesn't quite cut it from a scientific perspective. I would even go so far as to say it was slight propaganda... they were so intent on driving the message of 'no fishing can ever be sustainable' that it made for quite a biased documentary, you can clearly see that in how they cut and pasted the interviews with the NGOs. Also many fisheries scientists and marine biologists prove there are ways in which we can have sustainable fishing, though of course not eating fish for now is still the better option. I would still recommend the general population watch it, but to take the statistics with a pinch of salt.

@@solarpunkalana The statistics for 2048 bothered me too, to be honest, but I don’t really agree with you on the fact that the documentary should have been more scientific. Scientists have been telling the numbers for years now and still, no one cares. I think that the fact that they dramatized it really helped in reaching more people and making people really understand the severity of the problem, and as far as I know, the movie really got a good feedback.

It's definitely not my area of expertise and I'm lucky enough to not get any in the city where I live. My first thought is it seems like there's so many mosquitos where you live I wouldn't be concerned about hurting the populations of them! Seems like there's plenty to go around and the animals will just go otherwise if they prey on them. There are some insect repellents that have an impact on ecological health, my suggestion is to look up the options (citronella candles or whatever you choose) and google it with 'ecological effects' and see if there's any papers addressing their environmental impact. They're all so different its hard to speak to all of them. I hope you can find something that works for you though!

Check out online research positions! Things have changed a bit since I looked for research jobs so I’m not sure the best place to look but try following your favourite local environmental organizations and see what they post. Often they need help cataloging wildlife camera trap photos or something similar to assist with research projects. Here a lot of that is done through federal parks and can be done online. If not, then start off small for undergrad research. Think about the issues local to your area. Overfishing a certain region, digitization mapping of cultural sites, introduction of an invasive species into a park...and create research ideas from there. If you get permission you can set up test plots for vegetation...try looking up research projects in the niche you’re interested in and read their methods for ideas of how to set your research up. I know that’s kind of simplifying it but hopefully that spurs some ideas
