Just saw this. Graduated in 1969 from USCGA. Noticing major differences between then and now. Interesting video. At the end of the day, in the service, I was duty swimmer on our ship, and in open ocean jumped in water, swam out and brought man in life jacket (24 hours) back along side of ship for rescue. Hour later, did the same for 3 clinging to a life ring. It was worth all that I went through at the Academy. Back in the day, we had mandatory chapel on Sunday. I was involved in Officer's Christian Fellowship, which provided many Christian contacts in the Academy and later.

Hi Erin! Thank you for showing us what it's like at the USCGA. I was stationed there from 1985 to 1988 as a YN1. It was one of the best places to be stationed because of all the commodities. As you know, most CG units are small and sometimes remotely located. Thank you for your service and posting these videos and I wish you Godspeed in all your endeavors. Semper Paratus and Bravo Zulu to you!

God truly works in mysterious ways. I tuned in to see what a day is like for a cadet, but when you opened the video with Galatians, I was suprised. I settled in watching but then you mentioned going to fellowship, I was again taken aback. How does this cadet, with her structured day find time for bible study and fellowship? When you mentioned that its important for us to spend time with God regularly I felt bad because I haven't been doing this for quite some time now. It's been the usual excuses: school, sports, family and friends. When it comes down to it, it me and me alone who's walked away from the Lord. It's been 5 days now since I first watched your video but I am reading the bible again and will be going to church on Sunday. I tuned in to get an understanding of what the Coast Guard Academy is like, but I instead got a serious look at myself and my relationship with God. Thank you and God bless.

I taught math for a couple of years. What we tend to forget is there are two parts to math. The first is doing the arithmetic. The second, and probably the most important, is it teaches you how to address and focus on a problem. If you don't understand the scope of the problem, you can't solve it very well. That skill applies in any job and career you may pursue.

Hi I’m 14 (freshman in high school) and I work around boats at a yacht club teaching kids to sail. I am super enthusiastic about the coast guard but nervous that I won’t get in. I have good grades/in high honors, I’m athletic, and comfortable around the water. Is there anything else I should try to work on or better myself at? I also play cello quite well. Would that help me get in? Thanks for any help!

I’m not in any of the service academies but I’ve had a few advice given to me since I want to attend USAFA, USNA, or USCGA. Since you’re doing well academically and physically I’d suggest going for some programs to help build some leadership. Since your a freshman see if your high school has a JROTC, the branch shouldn’t necessarily matter since it’s the leadership and military skills that will help you the most. If your high school doesn’t have a JROTC I’d suggest looking into other military related programs such as Civil Air Patrol, Naval Sea Cadet Corps, or Young Marines. Being in these programs should help you build more character for yourself to work on. One thing I’d like to mention is that I often say ‘being in a unique organization is one thing but doing something unique in that organization is another’. Point is, if you do join any of these programs or any other leadership program try aiming for leadership positions as it will again build character and leadership skills for yourself. I personally am apart of NJROTC and Civil Air Patrol and in certain leadership positions and trying my best to improve myself along the way. Overall, give a look into the things I mentioned and continue to work on yourself and I can bet that you’ll find yourself admitted into the Academy of your choosing. Hope this helps!

Woah, I’m 14 too, I’m the complete opposite, I’m almost always about to drown when I go in water, I’m not physically in shape anymore, and I know nothing about boats. Yet I’m still considering joining the CG… as a rescue swimmer 😂 It seems really cool and I would like to do some type of military service without having to kill anybody, and rescuing people from dangerous situations is something I would love to do. But it seems like an impulsive decision so I dunno, maybe I’ll be a hostage negotiator, but I’m still considering taking the decision of becoming a Coast Guard. Who knows, but it’s cool seeing another kid my age thinking of doing it too. Hope your dreams come true, and I’d say, you should join the CG, just make sure to continue researching about it to see if you are really prepared. A lot don’t do it and give up because it was too much for them and they took the decision impulsively. But anyways, I hope all the best for you, God bless you!

Try your best to show the admissions officers your character in your essays. You don't have a lot of room so pick the parts of your life that have impacted you the most and emphasize how they shaped your character. Well rounded-ness is always a good thing and having past leadership experience will show them that you are already on your way to being a leader!
