It depends, if you go to work in the ER you can take the CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) instead of CCRN. Also having a pre-hospital background, such as working as a paramedic is helpful as well.

Almost all medical helicopters were hospital based and the hospitals leased them under a traditional HBS contract with the vendors ( Air Methods, PHI, Med Trans etc). Next came the CBS or community based models. These were programs that were owned and operated by the Vendors themselves. These proliferated during the early 2000s as vendors soon realized instead on the 14% they were making on a HBS contract they could make upwards of 60% on CBS contracts. In the 80 and 90s a transport would cost $1500-$5000. Today they can be north of $45,000! We went from 300 HEMS aircraft to over 1200. Every study has shown the country can operate with 600. A recent study showed over 50% of those being flown today dont meet criteria or need to be flown. 40% are discharged within 24 hours. These companies became publicly traded or owned by financial companies they needed to make huge profits. They scaled back their aircraft and training and jacked up their prices. Now you have bargain basement programs fighting over flights. Dont get me wrong there are still some respectable programs out there doing the right thing but they are few and far between. The industry is a shell of its former self .

@@ralphbove I’d recommend you try metro aviation, all of their programs are Hospital based with the exception of a few community based services because they focus on the aviation side and don’t hire Med crew or do any medical stuff, it’s left to the hospital or a local EMS agency to staff EMS for them
