you look so young to have completed your masters!! congrats! i have two questions: 1. how much math is really involved and 2. how often do you inspect sites?
@ughannoying6513 жыл бұрын
I have the same questions lol someone pls answer!
@AdamJasperr3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! My university has a 5 years masters program that really makes getting that degree a lot quicker! And to answer your questions: 1) there is a lot of math and science involved with this degree. I was using physics in nearly all of my upper level classes so yeah, very involved. 2) I would inspect sites nearly every day. It was part of my job description though and it differs by field as well as experience. The more experienced engineers at my company would rarely perform any inspections and I expect that translate in other companies as well. Does that help answer your question?

What are your typical calculations that you deal with daily?
@AdamJasperr3 жыл бұрын
The calculations vary widely, but I’d say I use calculations I actually did learn in class. The different things you learn in the classroom tend to be the same things you use on the job (at least in civil engineering)

hi bro, It would be awesome if you show how you draw at work. And Which programs do you use during the work? Just Autocad or something else as well?
@AdamJasperr3 жыл бұрын
My company worked exclusively out of AutoCAD but it’s pretty common for civil engineers to use a lot more programs. I’ve worked at places that use Revit heavily along with some other engineering software for calculating random things that bolt strength and concrete strength.

Great question! The salary varies heavily on your location of work and the experience you have. Because I had both my masters degree as well as 3 summers of internships, I was able to negotiate my salary up to reflect my experience. When in doubt, check Glassdoor for salaries in your area to see if you’re getting paid enough and make sure you always ask for more!

@FrankKusel3 жыл бұрын
I did a 2 years masters time. I'm now working for 3 years and I confidently say that the others who started earlier are now earning better salaries. It's all about the experience. Maybe in the long run they'll look for guys with advanced degrees to preferably take over important roles.

How often do you go to inspect sites?
@AdamJasperr3 жыл бұрын
I usually inspected site every day. The housing market is really booming at the moment and construction is working at a really fast pace to get the homes done. But this can vary depending on the number of houses being built, as well as the company you are with.

@AdamJasperr3 жыл бұрын
Typically what I’ve found is that your graduate studies are where you begin to focus your area of expertise. For example, I earned my masters in civil engineering with an emphasis in structural engineering. That really just means that I took a lot more structural classes because that was the area I wanted to go into. But you could do anything from geotechnical, to construction, to project management, it really just depends on your school and what classes it has to offer.

@AdamJasperr3 жыл бұрын
I’d say just try as best as you can to see what kind of work you’ll actually be doing on the job. For me, I sort of romanticized the work I would be doing as a structural engineer and when I finally started working, it didn’t line up with what I imagined. Just do your research and see if you can shadow/intern with any companies in that industry.

Yeah I have! It was super stressful the first few times just because I hadn’t built a relationship with the foreman and that meant they had to do more work really quickly before the concrete comes.
