Hi👋, today I wanted to show you what a day in the life of a PhD in computational neuroscience looks like. It is corona right now, so not much is happening, but I still hope you enjoy the video 😊.

Hi Charlotte. I'm a biomedical engineering PhD in Canada. I do the same type work you do except I work in dementia disorders specifically. Nice to see someone else suffering in the same way.

Your work sounds extremely fascinating. What are your best tips for getting into this area especially from a non-science background? My interest is especially piqued as I have a LO (currently seeking official diagnosis) with suspected dementia. Thanks in advance. Excited to explore your channel, Charlotte!

Your thesis sounds very promising, and it must really be tedious to work with since you're going to have to make complex MI algorithms. It could probably ripple the world of psychiatry, but I'm wondering if we have enough data on what genes and biomarkers are affected in each of these psychiatric conditions. Also, are you using the HCP database to accumulate the Brain Scan data and utilize predictive modeling to put markers on the brain scans? I'm working on something similar right now, but only creating a predictive model for Autism Spectrum Disorder using the ABIDE brain scan data, now I'm wondering if I should utilize the biomarkers as well, but I have no idea how to work with that lol. I'm currently a Master's student in Bioinformatics and want to pursue Comp Neuroscience in my P.hD. The work you're doing is inspiring and I'm glad that you're sharing your journey on KZfaq for the aspirants :)

Greetings. The vlog of a computational neuroscientist is super cool and inspirational! I did some research on the ergonomic workplace setting, and I might have some advice that can help you. The layouts of your laptop and the big monitor could be improved ergonomically. The laptop could be placed higher, parallel to your eyes. And you can get one of those independent mice and keyboards, so your arms can rest naturally on the desk by your torso. The monitor could also be placed on the same level as your eyes, right next to your laptop, so you can have two screens side by side. Your videos helped me a lot. Wish you found what you need throughout the PhD journey.

Hello! Currently, in my bachelor's in cognitive science, I am extremely interested in the idea of researching the brain with a mathematical approach. I am even more passionate about the idea that the research will eventually contribute to the field of medicine. It seems that programming is a huge part of your daily work routines. Though the theoretical idea of algorithms fascinates me, coding is not my strongest point. So I was wondering how much knowledge of programming is required in the career path (including academia) of computational neuroscience. Greetings from Germany :)

Hee Wooki, amazing that you want to go that direction, I highly encourage it :D. I think it is about 90% to be honest. If you are thinking of starting, I would take some coding courses, on Coursera for example, and see if you enjoy that and then continue from there ^^

@@CharlotteFraza I have a similar question, actually because I come from a different background, I have a PhD in physics (so I already know a bit of programming), but I'm wondering if it would be necessary to at least have a masters in cognitive/ neurosciences to move to that area... any thoughts?

Hey, Charlotte, great video!! I'm coming from that "how to self learn Computational Neuroscience" video. This is just like that one, another awesome work! Thank you for sharing! Seeing the major topic of your work, I find it kind of surprising why the diagnosis of certain mental problems is unavailable yet. Like, we know that we can see from the brain image of depression patient that certain part of the brain such as the prefrontal robe is shrinking compared to the normal brain. Then why couldn't we just use brain scan to determine depression patient or other mental problems? Well, my own theory, brain shrinkage is kind of common and in order to determine the real mental illness patient we need particular person's healthy brain image to compare the brain image that's from unhealthy period. Since that's unlikely to have a healthy brain image of a particular person, we have nothing to compare so we can't use this brain scan to determine the diagnosis of mental illness. Hmm... I'm just talking about my own assumption. And I think your field might be focusing more on medicine making rather than diagnosis? Either way, I'm pretty sure your work is going to benifit a lot of people as mental health problem is getting more and more serious nowadays since the lifestyle change a lot compare to our parent generation.

Yes, I also assumed when I just started that it was a problem that would be solved quite fast. But the interesting thing is that people with the same brain patterns can be 'disordered' or 'normal' according to the DSM-5. I would read this paper for a more nuanced discussion: 'Understanding Heterogeneity in Clinical Cohorts Using Normative Models: Beyond Case-Control Studies', but loving ur interest in the field!

@@CharlotteFraza Yeah! I'm so interested in how our mind/behavior works. It's really tricky to have a definite answer on what is what and even if we have the general pattern of a certain type, how we actually behave under certain circumstances can still baffle me. But what I said is more about psychology, and I know neuroscience is deeper down the surface, which is more interesting and more fascinating. I'm currently pursuing a computer science bachelor's degree and I wonder if what I am learning in this phase and my interest in how brain works will meet together in the future. Then youtube recommends your video on "how to self learn computational neuroscience" and then I knew that there's a field that actually combines computer and brain, it's so fascinating to know that! Although one thing that concerns me is my mathematical background which might not be super strong... I already need to put a lot more hard work on algorithms in my computer science major... but I really enjoy figuring out the problem solving, just not that fast though... but still, knowing some facts on how the brain works, I know that I don't have that much practice on what I find is difficult so that there's no "history"/"resource" to provide my brain for generating new idea(something I learn about creativity and neuroscience from talks by a professor called Beau Lotto). Anyway, the more I learn about how the brain works, the more I am hopeful of what I am capable of. Ah, also, the fact that there can be same brain pattern between "normal" and "abnormal" is quite interesting. Having cases/data like this is what makes it hard to put our finger on what causes what... Neuroscience is super interesting 😆

Hello, I want to do PhD in Decision Neuroscience. I'm currently undergrad business student with majors in finance and marketing. Neuroscience is such a broad field anyone can find their interest/domain. If someone is in medical, they can directly go in human neuroscience which is related to medical disorders/disfunctions. A person like you who likes computers, coding etc can go in Computational Neuroscience and person like my who's studying business, likes marketing, advertising, branding can go in Decision/Consumer Neuroscience.
