Follow along behind the scenes in a day (okay, 2 days) in my life as a cinematographer on a narrative short film. Like many smaller projects, each person on set was wearing multiple hats, and I was no different, I ended up producing this project as well. If you're a cinematographer with your first short film coming up, or you have some years under your belt, I hope you can take something away from this one.

The stress on that focus puller in the intro is real. My wife pulls focus for me and after a difficult take she’s literally sweating.

We're just starting out. Trying to find good people for crew, and me transitioning from stills and producing machinima. It was good to see how the sausage is made. Thanks for sharing.

I'm very interested in watching movies being made! It's a lot of work that people have viewed in a couple of hours! you can show the analysis of the script! As you plan! How you draw everything! live conversations when you sit together and discuss how everything will go!

Sony a7siii with the Tamron 28-75. We shot about 2 weeks ago, so the short is still in post-production.

What boom mic is that ? I been looking for it
@NickHouchin
@NickHouchin 5 ай бұрын
Sennheiser mkh50. Another similar style of mic at around half the price that I commonly see recommended is the Audio Technica 4053b. Curtis Judd has several videos comparing these indoor dialogue mics.

For a short film you have some nice equipment. Do you rent your camera, or do you own it. I try to buy what I can, but it sure adds up. I like the tripod you use.
@NickHouchin
@NickHouchin 5 ай бұрын
I run a commercial production company, so we own the kit. The closest rental house is about an hour and a half away, so it makes more sense for most projects to bring my own kit. I've slowly built up the kit over 5+ years. Gear isn't the thing that will make or break a project - your creativity and execution will.
@neilnoriega2183

Yes agree. I've built up and I'm still buying. I've worked in the film industry, and I try to use all my contacts to get gear. @@NickHouchin

If you don't mind sharing, what was your budget like?
@NickHouchin
@NickHouchin 5 ай бұрын
Actual budget vs what the budget could/should/would have been are massively different on this project. We didn't have to rent any gear since my production company provided it. We called in favors from the filmmaking homies - we've been working on each other's stuff for years. In the end we paid the actors, the location, crafty and meals, 3 Airbnb's for the actors, hard drive space, and a few costume and production design odds and ends. The out of pocket amount was between $1-2k. This is how we've "hacked" making stuff for a lot less than it should cost over the years.

Wow that's amazing. Well, great job as producer. I know that was a hell of a feat. I ran into a similar situation with actors not showing at the last minute and that drove me crazy and I had no one else to call.@@NickHouchin
