I watched your creepy guy in the wilderness video - I've had this happen to me a few times hiking the Appalachian Trail and it scared the crap out of me! But it was probably a thru hiker on the CDT who had hiked all night and decided to cowboy camp. Doesn't make it any less creepy, but that happens all the time on long distance trails.

1. I know you're a wildlife biologist but do you think marine biologist have the same time-inducing workload? 2. I'm a junior in high school right now, should I start looking into internships and/or volunteering oppurtunities around animals and wildlife? 3. These might be more personal so you don't have to answer these unless you want to: Did you take any honors or AP classes in high school? What was your GPA in high school? Did you do any sports or clubs? Should I take physics or AP Environmental Science (taking AP Biology right now) for senior year? I'm thinking of applying to UCSD so just wondering haha.

1. I think marine biologist work is definitely similar from talking to my friends who do that! 2. I think that you can definitely start looking into resume builders like that in high school. The earlier you start the more competitive you'll be for your first job! Volunteer positions might be your best bet as most internships are reserved for university students. 3. I took all the honors and AP courses I could get in high school, I graduated with a 4.3 weighted GPA. I think AP Environmental Science or Physics would be fine - I would check though if AP environmental science transfers as meeting any UCSD equivalent - my AP physics class got my first year Physics class knocked off but I'm not sure if they would take AP Enviro as well. You can also email the UCSD counsellors too to check. I actually didn't even get into UCSD right out of high school, I got rejected because my GPA was too low (its insanely competitive) so I ended up going to community college for two years then transferring :) If you're in the San Diego area a lot of the local community colleges have transfer guarantees if you earn a certain GPA, although its been many years since I did that so I'm not sure what's still available

Really appreciate and enjoy your videos Kristina! For awhile now, especially after learning about veganism and going vegan, I've been trying to figure out what kind of (preferably scientific) career would allow me to help both animals and the environment. After coming across your channel, I'd like to consider making a career change and going back to school to get a B.S. in Wildlife and Conservation Biology. Leigha McKinney that’s a really good question. If you’re submitting an application in the pile youre already behind in the hiring process. Most jobs come from word of mouth and connections. You can build your connections in school and in internships (check out my most recent career advice video on my profile for more on how to do that). Then hopefully you can get someone who works at that organization to vouch for you. If you don’t know anyone and have no connection, taking the time to tailor your resume to the posting helps. Like if it’s a field job, make sure you’re showing all your field experience etc. Try to find the hiring manager and address your cover letter directly to them. If you get rejected, follow up and ask for constructive criticism to improve your application in the future.

Im a sophomore in Highschool and I had trouble finding out what I wanted to do, but then suddenly it just kinda clicked for me that I have always loved nature, so why not do a job like this? I would mostly like to work in the field, you know seeing all the animals and stuff. Your videos really help! What classes did you take in Highschool to prepare you for this job?

Ah I can’t even remember high school courses. I just took the standard ones to graduate high school. I actually went to community college for two years so I didn’t even think about planning ahead for university honesty. Any science classes help!

I am 22 and about to start college at a community college. Will it be harder to get in the swing of things when I graduate years from now (as and older adult)? And should I look for in a 4 year college to pursue transfering. (In theory my credits will transfer with me?

Thank you! I don't think it will be any harder! Lots of my coworkers didn't finish their masters degrees until their early 30s :) I would look for a 4 year college that offers a variety of science majors (beyond just general "Biology" major). Look for something affordable and reasonably priced. If you want, you can google "biology labs" and university names to see if there's some interesting research you can get involved with at that school. As far as your credits transferring, you'll have to chat with your school advisor (your CC should have one) because that stuff changes based on state, school, country, year etc

Hello, I have a lot of experience doing conservation work such as trail work. Would a combination of my past trail work and a 4-year wildlife biology degree can this help with "experience" also could you break down the ratio of field V.S. office work that you do?

Thank you for your great videos! I have learned so much from them. I was wondering if you have to work out to keep in shape for your job. When you were hired was there a certain stamina criteria you had to meet besides just a physical?

My work didn't personally test us on anything, just required that we are comfortable hiking up to 10-15 km a day. I have always been a backpacker so it was a natural fit for me. I work with people of all shapes and sizes and stamina levels though but as long as you can walk in all terrains pretty comfortably its fine. We hike very slowly and take a ton of breaks along the way :)

Also, I want to work with endangered animals in Africa one day, but im hesitant due to Malaria and possible lack of food resources, do you have any information to say if I should be worried of if shouldnt, etc?

Evan Blodgett I would go for it! Plenty of people travel to Africa every day and are able to do it safely. Most field stations will stock you up with food and if you’re in a malaria area then you can take anti malaria medication. Sounds like a great experience if you’re able to find a job or volunteer over there

I know this is a late comment but how much time do you get off in the winter? And does your salary include that time off?

I usually get 3-4 weeks paid as a base and then whatever OT time I have banked up throughout the year. Canada though has more time off in general than USA I found.

What are the gpa requirements for this job? I had a solid gpa (3.7) in college, but I overworked one semester and did poorly so now I have a 2.978 (I guess rounding to the tenth place is not a thing to these people). I am retaking the classes (my college replaces the grades of previously attempted courses) and probably going to do better. I am usually a great student, but will that semester hurt my chances of being a biologist of some sorts?

It depends on if you want to go to grad school. Usually grad schools require a competitive gpa, minimum over 3.0 overall but usually higher. If you don't plan to go to grad school, it doesn't really matter. Ive never had an employer ask my GPA, but ive heard of some asking, but its not common

Hey kristina! Do you only study the animals from afar and try to not bother them or do you help them if they were to be injured? And do you study all animals or only specific ones?

That’s a great question. I study them from afar and try not to bother them but I find myself getting involved if I see an animal that needs urgent help or it will die. For example, I rescued a seal from a beach that was dying and an owl that got stuck in mud when doing field work. I couldn’t bear to let them die. As for your second question it depends. Some days I’m looking for just birds and some days general habitat surveys. Generally I focus on endangered animals or sensitive features (dens, nests) though - they get higher priority than just observing a robin foraging.

That does help! It’s hard to get a full “wildlife biologist” job with only an associates but I’m sure you can find a wildlife technician or related entry level environmental technician job. Then you can save and go back to school later if you need :)

I’m kind of in a weird spot right now... I’ve always been extremely passionate with wildlife (I’ve volunteered at the Audubon society, kept exotic pets, and have always tried to go on as many hikes as I can to go bird watching). Some of you may be able to relate, but my parents pushed me into going to Law School. Alas, I’m going into my senior year of undergraduate university and I’ve come to conclusion that Law is not the career path I want to take... is it too late for me to get my way into a zoology/wildlife biology graduate university without any academic prerequisites?

I would at least look into it. Check out the prerequisites for a masters degree at the universities near you to see if there is any. You can always apply and see if you get in. You might need to take some night classes or something for a bit to get yourself up to speed. Also have you thought of environmental law? Less field work but environmental law is a huge emerging field to help save wildlife - sometimes it’s even more efficient to fight for wildlife through the court system them to do research in the field.

Knowing what type of job you want would be excellent since then you can take the classes for that and plan ahead and get out of school sooner. That said...many of us (me including) did not know what to study and narrowed it down while taking courses and seeing what was interesting. I would say try to think of a zoology job that interests you and plan for that but keep an open mind and don’t be afraid to switch! You will likely need to be open anyway since many “dream jobs” are extremely difficult to get

And also I wanted to get out of the oil and gas industry and into conservation

Ottawa and surrounding area definitely has wildlife jobs, especially for the government! Picking courses that will help you get into uni will be the best idea at this point in your schooling :) Your school's academic counsellor should be able to help

Not anywhere I’ve worked. You’re on the clock while driving and doing safety paperwork so if you and your family were injured or in a crash on work time in a work truck it could be bad. Usually for work trips family stays behind

I usually don't like to open up to people but this is KZfaq so I guess its fine. I know this is probably a common question from people that are going to collage, but I can't help but want to vent on it. What if I don't have what it takes to get a job in Wildlife Biology? I mean, I like learning about animals and there habitats but what if I don't like it enough to go to school for it? What if there's more to them kind of jobs then what I think there is? There's all these what if questions that wouldn't be such a big deal if collage weren't so expensive. I watch videos on animals, insects, weather....you know, things nature wise, but I don't remember a lot of it. Does that show that I'm not as interested as I thought? I mean, when I see an insect that I never saw before I would go and look up the characteristics to identify the name. After I would do a little 5- 10 minute research on it. Does that show interest? I only done that twice so far for I pretty much just now got a little interested in bugs. Can't say the same for mammals. I've been interested in that longer. That's not the point. I guess my point is...what does it take? How do you know if you got what it takes? I'm a senior in high school and I don't know if a wildlife biologist is what I want. But if not that then I don't know what I want.

I think that once you've found a good path, then it will feel exciting to think about working in that field. If something doesn't feel right or you're feeling dread when you think about it, it's probably not the right path for you. What subject do you find the most interesting at school? Sometimes it's too hard to pinpoint a perfect job when you're looking back at the very beginning of the road in high school. Instead, focus on a broad subject that you like and once you're actually taking your intro-level classes in university then you can pinpoint a specialty like wildlife biology because you'll have been exposed to a lot of different stuff. I started university studying microbiology because I was into my science class, then changed to ecology after I took a cool ecology class my second year, then didn't specialize in wildlife biology until literally three years into working as a biologist. Don't try to stick yourself in a specific career too early or you'll just get overwhelmed - I know school counselors try to get you to identify specifically what you want at 17 but in my opinion that's pretty silly because I was a totally different person with different wants and dreams 10 years ago. Just be flexible and find what general subject feels right and youll figure it out as you go :)

@@kristina_lynn Yeah. I kind of figured that going to community collage would open doors since they offer more classes. I think I just just doubt my ability to do things. But I have always been that way. I think I know how to do something, but maybe I don't. I think that may have came with my poor social skills. I've been working on my social skills since 10th or 11th grade, and I'm doing better, not exactly there yet, but overall better. So I hope the same goes for my doubt. And as for my favorite subject(or subjects,) I would say science and history. Though, there would be some parts that I wouldn't like in the two subjects, such as chemistry or political....um...stuff. But I thought that was normal? Maybe not? I don't know. There's also many reasons into why I looked into the job. I always wanted to travel, see wildlife, see different cultures, hike around wooded areas. I think those are obvious reasons though. But I do remember that I kept telling my mom and step dad that I wanted to gain knowledge in animals and their habitats. But they always assumed I wanted to become a veterinarian. But anyways, sorry for ranting. I do that a lot (for typing) I guess. Thank you for reply!! All honestly I was hoping to get one. So thank you!

Do undergrads count as "scientists" or "biologists"? I thought those titles were dedicated to PhD/Master level grads. Not saying you dont deserve it, these videos are very inspiring!!! 👍. I just thought that's how it goes.

Nope there’s no rule saying only graduate students can be scientists. My job title is literally biologist so it’s possible 😊

Unfortunately some sort of higher education is required to become a biologist. However, there are environmental jobs you can get without a degree, though a degree helps. My best friend works as a naturalist educator for national parks without a degree - I’m planning on having her in a video soon to explain her job :)

Thank you for the video! Right now I dropped out from information and technology (it) degree to pursue wildlife management degree, its always my dream to work with animal and nature. However I'm a bit busy since I got a side job to support myself, so I'm thinking of going to online college. Is there any downside to online learning? Or should I just go to community college

The downside to online degrees is that it can be really valuable to get internships and field work before graduating since you pretty much have to have SOME related experience on your resume to get a job, even an entry level one. In person school can have some huge benefits that you can network with professors and labs to help you find a job after graduating. I think an online school could work as long as you can really commit to volunteering with a wildlife/biology related organization or doing an internship while in school so you don’t miss those opportunities for in person connections.
