Congrats on your new channel and first video, Chelsea! Well done. I'm very curious about what goes into rate filings and handling regulator objections. I'm a former patent research analyst and examiner and what you described reminded me of my old job in patent prosecution. Thanks!

Thank you for sharing your experience of being an actuary and how you study the Bible. I was wondering how actuaries have time for being a KZfaqr. I’ve seen several and some even quit their full time highly paid actuarial job. What’s the main reasons that an actuary might not love their job?

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. To be honest, it is challenging to balance KZfaq/my blog and my full time job as an actuary 😅 But it’s important to me to help and inspire others, so I do my best to make time!

I think everyone has a different working experience. Some don’t love taking exams, others have a hard time with work/life balance, others may not have supportive bosses or a positive work environment. I think it really just depends!

Chelsea, loved this video! Thank you for sharing what a week in the life of an actuary looks like. I have a question. You mentioned in your video that you make sure to leave work at least twice per week at 5:30. Does that mean that the norm is staying pass 5:30? I heard that Fellows work 12-14 hour days during the weeks. Is that accurate?

Hi Ricardo! Thanks for watching and the kind words. That is a great question! The number of hours actuaries work depends highly on the industry and role, plus some have seasons that are busier than others. For me, I’ve worked 10-12 hour days during busy seasons, but mostly by choice because I love the work I do. In more sustainable periods, I can usually get close to working a 8-9 hours per day. Many actuaries are able to establish good work/life balance. That is something I have always struggled with bc I love my work and enjoy doing a good job. Hope that helps 🙂

I'm in 10th grade rn, but for the last few years I've been thinking of going to college to be an actuary, what classes should I take, and also is it possible to only work from home?
@ChelseaAdlerFCAS

Hi! Those are great questions. Yes, you can absolutely work from home as an actuary (I currently do!) If you want to become an actuary, I’d suggest trying to find a college that has the actuarial science major. That will help guide what classes to take, but in general, you will take calc, stats, accounting, economics, computer science, etc.

I am a teacher, but im currently studying for the P exam. It is very interesting and enjoyable. When I pass the exam, would I most likely be looking for an entry level job?

Hi Hans! Thanks for reaching out. That’s great you’re interested in the actuarial profession and taking your first exam. Yes, once you’ve got exam P passed, I would encourage you to start looking for entry level positions.
