A lovely concept you've chosen for this video - you distanced yourself from the conventional specifications presentation, but I believe you've elaborated in the quintessential aspect of using this laptop - actual function and usage! Thanks for the great video! I'm torn on which laptop to get. I want an XPS 15 for the large screen with virtually no bezels but I know the new Macbooks are much more powerful internally but the bezels are huge 🥲 apple needs to make a 16 inch bezeless Air 😆

Hey! Just found your channel and I subbed! Love it! I just got my M1 MacBook Air with 16GB and yea. That extra 8GB really helps with editing 4K video. I can edit 4K video with no issues.

As a student myself, at the end of the day, before you plugged it in to charge, how much percentage of battery did you have? I hear it has excellent battery life, but I want to listen to it from a student's p.o.v. It's one of the essential things I'm looking for because the one I'm using now will only last 3 hours before I have to plug it in; it weighs about 5 pounds. It was great when I was doing online, but now that I'm going on campus, it is giving me shoulder pains. The video was excellent as well. Thank you!

what video editing software did you use in the mac air that didnt go well? did you run the editing software under Rosetta?

No, it was Final Cut Pro so it should be a native application. I think the performance of final cut was mainly limited by the lack of RAM, and not because of the M1 chip

I had a 2020 i3 MacBook Air and was going to upgrade to the m1 Air, but they were sold out everywhere. The apple stores did have the m1 pro in stock, though. Ended up going with a base model and it's a total understatement to say the difference between the i3 air and the m1 pro is night and day. i3 is fantastic for what it is while the pro just basically lets me do whatever I want without worry. The battery life is unreal, too!

Interesting, what a beautiful machine! I have never used an Apple computer in my life (unless you count emulating System6 on an ST, that is, haha). They have come a long way and I really like the design and OS, but I don't think I'm going to throw any money in that company's general direction, ever. Nor microsoft's for that matter, bleh.

Hey Ella! I’m not sure if you went over this in any of your previous videos, but what do you think about the touch bar on your Macbook Pro? I’m not a function key user, but I hear a lot of people complaining that they hate the touch bar since it doesn’t give tactile feedback. I’m planning on using a macbook as a CS major, so I’m not sure if the touch bar would hinder me much.

tbh the touchbar makes very little difference for me. I almost never use function keys, so most of the time I only use the touchbar to change the volume, display brightness, and to type emojis lol 😄😅. I'd say the touchbar is nice to have, but definitely not necessary

I just got 256 gb for this macbook but I didn't intend to use it for school. I would say 512 gb is a safe choice for an incoming college student. You want to have enough space to store various files, photos, videos and be able to download all the apps that you will need!

Thanks for watching! Chrome performs very well and is actually native to ARM now! Since this macbook only has 8 GB RAM, I can't have too many Chrome tabs and applications opened at the same time.

Seems like a lot of people are testing 4k video editing on MacBook Air M1 8gb and works fine so I’m wondering why streaming was so hard on your system? Considering getting the 16gb but dont know if i really need it. I use office 365 and chrome and final cut.

I have both the M1 MacBook Pro and the M1 Air and I can hardly tell a different in them. Both base models. Only thing I upgraded was the memory to 512. No issues with anything I've thrown at it. I'm selling my 16in MacBook Pro because of it.

You can always buy an external SSD for less than 150$ While Apple charges 200$ for 256gb

I know you commented in having 16 Gb vs 8 Gb. Are you still thinking 16 is needed for folks who do development work?

Yes, I think 16 GB RAM would be the best choice for anyone looking to get into dev work. Even if you don't think you need that much RAM right now, I think that 16GB RAM especially helps to "futureproof" your laptop. This way, if you start doing more and more heavy work on your laptop, you won't have to worry about RAM.

8 GB would be enough if you make sure to not have too many applications opened at the same time...but I would recommend 16 GB to be safe, and so that the performance of your laptop is not limited by the RAM.

@@kayleepham9911 hi I’m a student and I have the MacBook Air 2020 without the the m1 and I’d say it depends on what you’re studying. I study Asia pacific studies with Japanese and will be adding Korean to that next academic year and 8 ram is more than enough. If you were doing something more graphic related or that relied heavily on software then I’d get the pro. I wish I waited for the m1 because the fans in mine are so loud and sound like it’s gonna take off 😭😂😂 so the m1 defo sounds like the way to go. But yeh it depends on what you’re studying xx

Hi as a student 8gb ram with 512 ssd is sufficient or should get 16 gb ram?

8 sufficient easily

I would say 16 GB is a better choice because then, you will definitely not be limited by RAM. Looking at my activity monitor, I use close to 8 GB RAM on a regular basis and I use a pretty significant amount of swap as well.

@@CreatedbyEllaYT thank you for the information, I previously used dell with 4gb ram and surprisingly I managed to use for 5 years without any insufficient of ram so maybe I’ll go for 8gb first😂 since my budget kind of limited haha
