Every 9th of April, Filipinos are celebrating the Day of Valor (Araw ng Kagitingan) to commemorate the sacrifices and heroism of the Filipino and American soldiers who fought during World War II. People around the country pay tributes to the heroes who died when the province of Bataan has fallen under the Japanese Soldiers.
My province, Bataan, played a significant part during WWII. Filipino and American forces maintained the main resistance in the war against Japanese in the province of Bataan until the officials declared that the Bataan has fallen.
The Japanese decided to walk the huge number of prisoners to a prison camp in San Fernando, Pampanga, which is 150km from the starting point. The trek is known as the "Bataan Death March" because over 20000 prisoners died on this march through starvation, exhaustion or at the hands of the Japanese. The heroic defense of Bataan was seen as key event in the war. It gave the allies the time to prepare for later battles.
Remembering the Philippine history makes me proud to be a Filipino.
