Thanks so much for this video. Watching it I finally realized why my mustang is still so nervous around me. I was looking him straight in the eyes and faced him. So today I looked down and turned my body away from him pretty much the entire time and was able to pet him all over and he exhaled and finally lowered his head. Great success! Keep the videos coming!!!

For someone who doesn't know horses, this is an amazing video. Your body language on approach is telling her that you are polite, not threatening. Frequent releases tell her you won't ask too much of her. Returning to her over and over tells her that you are a new presence in her life, so she needs to get used to you. Your calm and steady way of working with her tell her you can be a leader she can trust.

@@thejack9178 A zebra is a wild animal. So is a lion. Mustangs are feral horses of domesticated breeds. That makes a big difference. This horse (and sadly, many others) is already captured by BLM. She is lucky to be with this trainer, as opposed to be rotting in a pen with no hope of adoption. I do NOT agree with BLM policy either, but take your grievance up with them, not with the people who are actually helping horses.

I was interested in the comment about her not having much room in that little enclosure. I wondered about that before you brought it up. I know a little about dog training. A dog on a short leash is likely to be more anxious than the same dog on a leash a few inches longer. Short leashes deprive dogs of options to flee, so they have more of an edge than when they're on a leash that gives them more room to escape.

I know y'all are gonna go so far. Your patience, taking your time and not rushing her, keeping her confident while also introducing direction combined with her contemplating and complying demeanor is such an amazing pairing. I love how y'all are even starting to get the beginning of "hook and draw" on this first day! That trust and communication is so, so very important to establish from the start. Don't listen to the negative Nancys out there. Keep doing what you do, cause they are right! These mustangs and horses are so lucky to have you, especially since you are some of their first inclinations of humans. Apparently, it wasn't that big of a deal, but I can't imagine trying to start a mustang on the first day with all that noise and other activity going on right there. Although it looks like she handled it fairly well, it seems like it would be really distracting and stressful. Would you prefer a slightly larger round pen to that square pen? It was nice meeting you last Friday there at Pauls Valley. I didn't realize you were shooting video when I said hi and it was a surprise hearing myself on the video you posted the other day. Didn't mean to interrupt anything. Best of luck with her. I'm sure she'll turn out great!

@@summerpottruff9217 I mean that's cool if you want thousands of horses starving to death. The land can't support the number of horses currently in those regions. Food and water are getting even more scarce and horses are destroying the landscape and making it hard for native species to survive. The BLM program is a humane way to control the population and maintain the land for all species (including horses)...but you go ahead and keep your uninformed opinion.

You made a good choice she's beautiful . I used to have a Dun mare to and I also owned a great great grandson of the famous wimpy he was a stud and he was fantastic and beautiful. He was very gentle 4 stud. I used him for a lot of breeding and pleasure riding I even rode him in our Christmas parades and did a lot of racing with him he was very fast. He was the kind of horse that would rather die than let another horse get in front of him . he was a fantastic horse and I wish I still had him but that's been a long time ago in the late 70s. I started training police dogs for years and retired now but still love horses more than dogs and I was very very good with dogs but never had a chance to learn how to train horses. I wish I could have because the lord gave me a gift 4 animals. Not to brag or anything but I have a fantastic gift and still do it just comes naturally what to do but needed training with someone 2 start me off like I did with dogs. It's a long story but an amazing Story how I went on to train police dogs knowing more than the trainers did. how to train them it was amazing how I knew all these things that just came like common sense. I myself don't even know how I don't know knew all that came natural to me how to train them but I did I just call it a gift from God

I have a quick question: At the beginning around 1:25, when the guys are talking and they kind of bang on the bars. Is that a part of desensitization before they continued working on the fences or were they not supposed to really do that? I'm not trying to make trouble, i'm just genuinely interested if it was a small desensitization practice?

I don't know anything about horses so this is a legit question..does wild mustang mean that horse was running out in the wild before this and was caught or something?
@SamVanFleet
@SamVanFleet 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! This horse had been in holding for 3-years. Prior to that, she had been in the wild. With an increasing wild horse population, resources have become limited. When a certain herd area runs out of food or water, they gather the horses so they can feed them in a contained pasture. It also helps slow the population growth down... there's currently 60,000 more wild horses than the appropriate management level. Programs like this one, the Extreme Mustang Makeover, help get these wild horses gentled and accustom to the domestic life :)
