It only took me 40 years to travel the roughly 60 km (35 miles) from my home in the Calgary area to Sheep River Provincial Park, deep in the heart of Kananaskis Country. This one-way route begins at the town of Diamond Valley (formerly known as Black Diamond & Turner Valley) and snakes its way along the Sheep River through the beautiful foothills of Alberta. We decided to take an easy afternoon drive out to the park ($15.75 entry fee) for a quick hike to check out its namesake waterfall and walk the dog, before heading back home.
Some surprises? It's way smaller than I envisioned, but has a powerful flow. And you definitely won't be here alone - it seemed everyone and his mother was here taking in the sights and bumping elbows on the narrow trail to the overlook (probably because it was May Long Weekend). In any case, a beautiful day in God's country!
