Really cool little project, I have been considering hand forging some stainless utensils and I didn't know about passivization until your video, thanks for the tips! the forks look amazing

@@rigoniironworks Just aswell... could go for a Roman Wine/Beer strainer, to accent your cocktail forks. Making the the ball end formers wouldnt take much.

Very nice! I don’t think I’ve ever seen lemon juice used for passivating stainless before. How long did they soak?
@rigoniironworks
@rigoniironworks 10 ай бұрын
This was an experiment. I soaked them for 3hrs in lemon juice, around 5% citric acid? I'll leave them on my desk to see if they rust.

I recently scored some scrap stainless from the remnants rack at my steel supplier. I'd heard I needed to do something to remove the surface iron after forging in my coal forge and brushing. Lemon juice was not my first guess, though. I now wonder, as that's just a weak acid, if cleaning vinegar would work, too.
@rigoniironworks
@rigoniironworks 10 ай бұрын
I think you need citric or nitric acid, not sure about vinegar.

Beautiful work as always. Is it particular to stainless steel, or is the fact you get almost zero scale formation on your parts a function of how your forge burner is tuned?
@rigoniironworks
@rigoniironworks 10 ай бұрын
My forge doesn't scale up the work as bad, but the big thing is I don't leave pieces cooking in the forge. I do the forging as fast as possible, then remove.
@Vikingwerk
@Vikingwerk 10 ай бұрын
@@rigoniironworks that makes sense, and your precise tooling lets you get the job done quickly. As I understand it (and there is years of reading left for me to do on gas forge theory) having the gas burner tuned to a ‘reducing’ flame, which I guess means running *slightly* shy of starved of oxygen helps prevent scale. But *I* am a long way from understanding the hows and tos of getting that flame tuned in, and it seems to be a unique process for each burner.

Very nice. Does the wire wheel cause the stainless to surface rust?
@rigoniironworks
@rigoniironworks 10 ай бұрын
The forging, wire wheel, files etc.. It will rust if you don't etch away the iron. I'm trying natural citric acid, but commercial products should work better.

When you were filing on the forks you were wearing a dust mask -- what dangers/hazards does stainless (different types) have that cause you to wear the mask? Maybe I/we need to wear masks too?
@rigoniironworks
@rigoniironworks 10 ай бұрын
I was switching from the belt sander to filing for cleanup. I try to wear a mask when using the belt sander.

Can you overheat metal please? Obviously, if you leave it long enough it becomes a molten mess but I don't mean that. If you overheat, does it become unusable? Thanks
@rigoniironworks
@rigoniironworks 10 ай бұрын
Yes, overheating can lead to cracking, along with heating and cooling too many times. Always try to forge to shape as quickly as possible. Less scaling and profiles will be more crisp.
