There was an electric sitar solo in this song. They are more like a regular electric guitar than an actual sitar. I once played one in a music store in the mid 60's

Rush, Eric Clapton, The Who, Pink Floyd, Skinard. If it's great its great. Life on earth didn't start In the year 2000. Beethoven, Wagner ,all the classics. Were do you think it came from. Good choice.

Saw this band at Manchester back in 1974, the pretzel logic tour, dragged along as a 12 year old to the concert by big brother. No interest in them at the time but as I grew they became part of my record collection. Sadly big brother now passed away and any time I hear any of their music it always brings back memories of that time as a 12 year old.

That sound was a electric sitar guitar - it't sort of like a regular guitar but it has a special bridge on it that makes it sounds like a sitar. So anyone that can play the guitar can play it.

As others have already stated, yes, it was an electric sitar. Steely Dan was two guys, one has passed, but they always used fantastic studio musicians to back them.

The percussion instrument you're asking about is called a cabasa. And I see several people have already told you about the electric sitar, which is played exactly like a regular guitar. You also heard one playing the other day on Redbone's Come & Get Your Love. It was just played much simpler in that song, so you may not realize it's the same instrument. Cheers!

"Do It Again" is my favorite Steely Dan song. It reminds me of when I was a kid back in the seventies discovering FM rock radio for the first time. And yes, it's a great song for a drive in the car or a longer road trip. Nice to see that you've reacted to a lot of Steely Dan already. A few great tunes you haven't reacted to yet include "Reelin' In the Years", "Kid Charlemagne", "Deacon Blues", "Hey Nineteen", "Black Friday", and "Josie" among many others. Good stuff!

Check out “The Dukes of September” playing live together with Donald Fagan, Michael McDonald, and Boz Scaggs! They play each other’s songs and they all still sound great. I saw Boz and Micheal live at the Waikiki Shell about 10-12 years ago. I guess Donald couldn’t make it, but it was a great concert!! I think they are still touring together!

The secondary solo you were asking about could have either been a guitar with effects to change the sound, or it could have been another keyboard set up to sound that way. I've been listening to steely Dan since about 1970 and I am 65 years old now and I'm thinking it was another keyboard. Of course I could be wrong. LOL

Glad to see you're checking out Steely Dan. You can't go wrong going down this rabbit hole. They made so much incredible music. This was a great debut album. But, to those who said they never topped this I would you ask, have you never listened to Katy Lied, The Royal Scam, or Aja? The thing about Steely Dan is that unlike some bands who never change their sound was different from one album to the next because they Fagan and Becker were always growing and experimenting.

I was 19 years old and working offshore oil in the UK. This came on the radio. I helicoptered back to Whitehaven, went to a record shop and bought the album. Dan has been the soundtrack to my life for 50 years. I’m 69 now. I have everything Donald and Walter have produced. You can take everything out of my long life…… just leave the Dan.

That was a electric sitāra or sitar in the west. a plucked stringed instrument, it comes from Indian, The Beatles and rolling stones made them popular in the 60s. I was taught to play one at 15 by my hippy uncle. After playing guitar for so long it was hard to get my rhythm right really never did. Hard to play for me it sounded like scalding cats most the time.. Lol

That percussion instrument you talking about is called a Güero (ɡwiɾo). It's a Latin American percussion instrument consisting of an open-ended, hollow gourd with parallel notches cut in one side. It is played by rubbing a stick or tines along the notches to produce a ratchet sound. Modern one's are often made of synthetic materials and sometimes metal.
