Hi Yul! Firstly, I've been watching you vlog ever since i chanced upon it here in YT and i must say, keep it up! As for your encounter at work, as a HR professional, i will suggest you to write in to your HR. Regardless if you're new or been in the company for awhile, no one should be put under such situation. There might not be immediate action taken to that colleague, but at least your HR colleagues are well aware of the situation. It will be good that you inform your boss as well that you've reached out to HR about the incident (He/she is your witness 😅)

Feel like it’s SG culture to just not be very confrontational when we are screamed at so I totally get you. What I’ve learnt over the years is to treat their words and tone as a lack of depth in argument and empty words - It helped me mentally overcome the anger and fear since I just treated it lightly since shallow words do not deserve my attention and emotional investment and let myself enjoy my day without being affected by it. Might be good to be apathetic at times!
@yuldaze
@yuldaze 6 ай бұрын
I actually agree on the non-confrontational culture here. Even when we’re unhappy about something at work, we’d just complain to fellow colleagues and work goes on 😂 compartmentalising the distress does help in the short term. But I’d do something about it if I have to interact with her frequently. Otherwise she’d think she can get away with it every time.

@@yuldaze definitely! It’s also good to know when to stand your ground. I feel like we have to sort of take back the power from others when they think they have one-upped us by scolding us publicly or trying to exert some form of superiority, by letting ourselves remain in control and being unaffected. Not sure if I’m saying it the right way 😂 but yup!

I feel you girl. Been in that situation before as well. Got me so pissed that i couldn’t sleep that night cos I was too angry to sleep. These people have low EQ, they never change cos their boss let them get away with it. In the end, we get angry, it hurts us more, and the person probably isn’t even aware…. so best is to get over it, maybe let off steam with hubby, friends or close colleagues so you feel better.😊

Sometimes it’s hard when people are unable to control their emotions, especially in a work setting. It might not even be a problem with you, they might be under stress at home or in their personal life and they don’t know how to separate themselves from it at work. It was good that you didn’t react and escalate the situation at the time. If you don’t feel comfortable reporting to HR at this stage, maybe speak to them (with a witness present) and ask if they’re ok? Or perhaps ask them is it the way you explained that they didn’t understand? It can be difficult being the bigger person, but sometimes it might be good in the long run.

Agree with @butterflyiing. Staying composed does not mean that you are weak and vulnerable but rather this shows your maturity in handling the situation. It is totally unacceptable that this co-worker yelling at you because there should be professionalism in the workplace. Having said that, if you are comfortable speaking to this co-worker (maybe with another person whom you trust), it is good to find out the reason why this person shouted at you. If in the end, you feel that this person does not show remorse for what he/she had done or exhibits persistent abuse/bullying, feel free to report it to HR as workplace harassment/bullying should be condemned for the sake of mental wellness of all colleagues at the workplace.

I gave the benefit of doubt and assumed she was stressed out, but it was not her first time being rude to others, even to those in more senior positions than her (made me wonder if she’s the daughter of our big boss or something 😂) I reckon the folks in my company are generally all nice & friendly so no one tried telling her off before.

This has nothing to do with how long u work in this company or whether u r in probation or not. Principle is principle. Workplace is to work, not making friends. The way u describe ur boss is also alarming. Rmbr he/she is also not ur friend. Be confident, set boundaries at workplace.

Even from my side where I had some nice colleagues, there are also some toxic colleagues who somehow always that I am not doing enough stuff for the team when I am clearly overloaded with work. What I always do will be talking to them that is only work-related but totally ignored them once I finish my work and don't give so much dann if you know you are not in the wrong. My advise is to report this to HR because it is a fact that you were yelled at. It is not your role to worry about someone else's job scope / role - this is applicable for HR and the co-worker who was rude to you. This is also a good indication of how well your company manages such issues. I hope you feel a little better now :)
