It's the last day of school at a high school in a small town in Texas in 1976. The upperclassmen are hazing the incoming freshmen, and everyone is trying to get stoned, drunk, or laid, even the football players that signed a pledge not to.

The best thing about this movie is how there are no real "cliques," like in every other shitty movie about high school. Kids that do a lot of sports will go chill with the stoners then go chill with the hippies. I mean you can say some kids are part of a certain group, like skaters or drama kids or choir preps (half the guys were playing football, too) or whatever, but they're really all kind of mixed into each other and you can't really nail them down to one group. That's one of the best things about this rad ass fucking movie.

The other great thing is, listening to rock music was cool. Now, we have rap and techno and pop shit, and it all sucks.
@MrBeastknows
@MrBeastknows 7 жыл бұрын
John Antonson No, none of it sucks. Rock music was never just "cool." That shows your lack of knowledge in music even further. Rock was so much more than that. Rock and rap are very similar in terms of themes. In fact, every topic in rap has been explored in rap as well in terms of lyrics. There's a reason rock artists often collaborate with rappers, because they're each generation's rebellion and commentary about what horrible things are being done. Pop has always just been popular music. It's not as good as it was, as we're missing Michael Jackson's writing, but it's still decent. There's just as many horrible artists as there were back in the day. I have zero defense for techno, though. But hey, music is subjective I have no hate for those who like a particular genre.

What made this movie so great is the way in which Linklater manages to channel that feeling of freedom that you experience when cruising around with your friends, smoking weed and drinking beer on a warm summer's night. That feeling that you get when looking at the people around you and appreciating everything, taking everything in, and realising that enjoying what you have and who you're with is all that really matters.

I rented this VHS from a Kroger in 1995 with a fake ID and never returned it. My friends and I use to get high and watch it frequently. I met a guy, now good friend, in a new neighborhood that we, my family and I, moved into in 2018 and he did the same thing, although not a Kroger, back in the day. Same age, different state, and similar teenage experience and now have families and responsibilities....we can still reminisce.

When this movie came out, I thought it was about time! Adolescent life in the 50s, 60s, and even the 80s get way too much attention in film. The 70s were never explained enough. But being in grade school at the time, I looked up to, and wished I was the older kids, and to be honest, I thought it was the coolest time in the world to be a teenager. it was post-Vietnam, so no one had to worry about a draft anymore, and life seemed simpler--less complicated than the 80s when my time arrived to have fun. Those kids from a decade earlier seemed to be able to get away with more.

Greg Fox. Yeah, the keg parties in the seventies.!! Well most kids on long Island started drinking on weekends in tenth grade. Most parents knew it was going on eh.? The parents in 75 were born in the thirties and many were heavy drinkers. Then in their early forties they were pretty open minded. Many of the parents thought the kids were gonna drink so it was best to have them drink at home, even a keg party at home, than out on the road.

I went to high school in a small town in the middle of California and graduated over a decade ago. this movie was my high school experience in a nutshell. all that matters was trying to get laid, finding alcohol and trying to figure out life after high school. we even had a party spot right in the middle of the fields called the Moontower. we called it the Moontower because it was right under a big old cell tower/radio transmitter thingy.

I was only 4 in 76 but I remember all the fire hydrants were painted red white and blue because of the the bicentennial. These characters in the movie totally remind me of all the teenagers who lived in my neighborhood. A few of them took the time to help me learn to ride a bike. It was a small blue Schwinn. A few years later my mom bought me a Stingray with a banana seat. Good times.

The 80s and early 90s were awesome. I'd imagine the 60s and the 70s were pretty cool also, but idk. The 80s had the beginning of video games (Atari) and the 90s lead up to the internet and cell phones. Once we got all this technology things seem to be "whatever". Seen that, done that, been there. Nobody came outside anymore. Or no where near as much. We used to get in trouble for staying out to late. Now I yell at my kids to get the hell out of their rooms! Maybe I'm just old;) idk, but my childhood, teen years, and early 20s were pretty good.

A number of years ago, the 90s, I worked with a bunch of kids in their early 20s. I was in my thirties. This movie made the rounds with these guys and since I grew up in the 70s, they were constantly asking me about this movie and was it really like that. I told them it was exactly like that. They were jealous of the way the characters lived, partied and did drug and alcohol. One time, though, they were all cynical and depressed about the state of the world they were entering as young adults. It was then I gave them the bad news. “You see how they all acted in that movie? All the drugs they were doing? Well, they’re now running the country. Surprised at how things are?” That made them think. Thirty years later, I’m no longer working with them. I hope they took the lesson I taught them, that day to heart.
