In this video the autopilot controls are focused on along with how to use the gyropilot position, how to fly victor airways, ILS approaches, along with some general flying tips on how to make ILS approaches easier in the DC-6 by PMDG. NDB and ADF navigation are briefly covered.

This Autopilot system back in the 50's or so must of been an engineering marvel really. I read a little about it. It really is a great autopilot system ! Great tutorial. Very clear and concise and to the point. Thank you for taking the time to do this for the community.

You're welcome and that AP would have been amazing back then. We have far more advanced autopilots and GPS in current times. I'd love to know what marvels the next generation will have in airplanes that would blow our minds if we could look into the future.

Awesome tutorial thank you! Another tip on rate of descent on GS = use IAS x 5. For example, going at 100 knots you’d want 500 ft/min descent rate

This has been the first plane that's truly piqued my interest to properly learn vs just using the assists. Running a controller and mouse on Xbox makes it a bit interesting at times but it's manageable. One day I'll spring for the honeycomb alpha/bravo setup to truly enjoy running the checklists lol Great video and definitely appreciate it

Flying the DC6 in the sim is spectacular. You can get yoke/throttle/pedals for less than the cost of an Alpha vs using the controller.

Excellent video ! I finally reconfigured DC6 so Giro Pilot 👨‍✈️ works again, climbing, descending, turning and staying on course (with and without GPS) works + ILS 👍 Still no fix from PMDG or Asobo, got sick of waiting. With help from forums it’s working like it used to

I had no idea there were any issues with the DC6. The FlySimWare 414 has been my go-to aircraft and since my hard drive crashed, the DC6 has been absent on my PC since the new drive was installed. Time to reinstall it again.

@@thecorporatepilotdad Giro Pilot has been cactus 🌵 for months, for months. Not sure what broke it, it went bad when GNS430 was introduced. There was one small patch from PMDG, didn’t fix it. I think Asobo working on something new, software PMDG is waiting for. We’ve been in a limbo for a long time.

Thank you for the details regarding the autopilot functions. I haven't gotten back into the DC-6 since the update (I'm waiting for my new throttle before starting to devote more time to learning it) but this will definitely be helpful.

Good to hear. Weren’t you getting CTDs before the update? Hopefully those are gone after the update. The AP isn’t bad but can be a little awkward at first.

@@thecorporatepilotdad I was. I did a couple loads of the plane just to see if it would CTD and it seemed to be ok. But Nothing too indepth just yet. Really looking forward to it though. Grabbed some other old school US airline liveries for it. ;)

If going to fly without the gps on in the EFB, first let the GPS boot and compleat it’s location cycle, then cycle gps to vloc a few times. Then switch to Bendix radio on the EFB. Other wise Loc will not work.

Very good video thank you! I have recently picked up the DC6 and this will help! Just a quick question though, when you were adjusting the dials with your mouse and it displayed the tooltip as you were turning it, showing the numbers change how did you manage this as I cant get the tooltips to stay up as I dial in the number making it harder as I have to keep stopping, move the cursor away so the tooltip disappears then move it back to see what it changed to!

Thank you very much, I have a question, I want to assign the pitch and turn commands for the autopilot using FSUIPC to a button in my keyboard, the problem that I don't know, what commands should I bind to control those, Can you help me with that?.

You would have to look in the controls menu and set key binds for each item. In the search box on the controls option screen, type "heading" and it should bring up all commands with heading that can be set and the same for pitch or any of the vertical modes (pitch, VS, FLC).

Unfortunately you need programs such as FSUIPC, spad.next, or Axes and Ohs to bind certain things but these are all paid software. It sucks to be honest but it is what it is :)

Have you tested the giropilot function since the DC-6 upgrade a few days ago ? I did some editing in the config files earlier, haven't tested the updated version yet.

@@thecorporatepilotdad Heaps navigation 🧭 without GPS, please. Just old fashioned flying steam gauges :) Or fly some old routes DC-6 used to fly :)

@@thecorporatepilotdad Yeah ! We could pick a route from the past, no GPS. Load airplane with number of passengers that day, same with fuel…and weather, could look up what weather would have been…must be historical weather information somewhere.

I think the autopilot is a bit messed up. I activated the autopilot on the gyropilot setting and the aircraft wants to turn every direction at a very steep angle. I've used both the gyropilot setting and localizer setting to follow to GPS before with no problem. Not sure what's going on.

I had issues with it yesterday too. Following a VOR on an approach was a challenge for it. I had to select GNS 430 on to back off to get it to work. It was not doing that when I made this video.

Did the original DC-6 have a gyropilot with this much functions? like did they have that kind of tech back in the day? (meaning localizer and approach modes)

Yes. Localizer and ILS are a 1930's tech. As are "Gyropilots" with ability to track radionavigational beacons. IIRC first experimental transatlantic flight with totally autopilot controlled takeoff, enroute, and landing was performed in 1946 by USAF's C-47.

What @090giver090 said. Lawrence Sperry made the first autopilot in the 1912. They didn’t see a lot of action until WW2 and after.

Lots. I think they had extra levers and needed to put them somewhere so they chose the DC-6. Thank goodness for innovation and fewer levers in cockpits today.
