@@albeil55 It kinda depends on the nature of the retcon for me. Like if a story states that Batman is allergic to milk then I expect him to be allergic to milk for the rest of his life unless the universe blows up again. But if Batman was only allergic to milk because he was a robot for a week and didn't tell anyone then I'm surprisingly okay with that. I respect a comic that will just give you a bonkers explanation like that and just move on to the story I'm here for.

Meanwhile, over at Marvel, their timeline has gone uninterrupted. Meaning the entire 54 years of continuity since 1961 to prior to 2015's Secret Wars are all still canon due to their Sliding Timescale/Floating Timeline which moves the timeline so the that Marvel's Present Day will always take place parallel to our Present Day, whenever that is. In fact, Secret Wars still didn't change much, it just gave Marvel the opportunity to eliminate the various parallel universes and transplant popular AU characters into the main Marvel Earth of 616, as well as retcon some events. Ooh, idea! How about a video on Marvel's Sliding Timescale to explain how time passes in-universe.

I like a few DC Heroes, but my biggest problem with DC's continuity is how they "Reboot" but keep things the same. I think of Rebirth as a Reboot. The New 52 reboot didn't effect Green Lantern and kept its history from before Flashpoint. Batman also kept his history from before Flashpoint, but now it all happened in the span of 5 years. THIS is my problem with DC. It's hard to keep track of What has happened in different titles.

Am I the only one that gets massively put off reading main continuity DC comics because of crisis events? Not necessarily because it's annoying to have things reset, but from a sympathetic level, as in I feel so bad seeing characters that I love get their literal existences and lives rewritten and warped like they do. It's the small moments that really make up our lives, and DC characters essentially face a fate force than death in the event of a crisis, and I just can't cope with reading that.

I think ultimately it's an inevitable aspect of keeping the "same" characters going for almost a century. This was much less of a problem for the first few decades since most of the characters were defined by a few quirks and often side characters like Lois Lane or Etta Candy had more personality than the heroes. Curiously enough, after the "soft reboot" of the Earth 2 reveal, most of the characters who had been steadily published were given their own reboots that were more about tone and style than fundamentals of the characters. Clark Kent became a TV reporter, Batman went solo and his enemies were psychos again, Wonder Woman became a depowered secret agent, and Green Arrow became a Social Justice Warrior. But DC still kept its heroes relatively one-dimensional. They didn't start injecting personality and inner life into a lot of their heroes until the late 70s with their Teen Titans and Legion books. Firestorm was another breakthrough simply because by his central premise he HAD to engage in constant internal dialogue. But the more life that's breathed into these characters the more convoluted it all becomes. Timeless characters are really just plug-ins. But characters that live have to change, or the repetition becomes glaringly obvious. DC has often used continuity errors as an excuse for their reboots. But I think that's a way to avoid admitting the real problem they're trying to solve. Ultimately there's only so much you can do with a character, whether they're static or have an actual arc they progress through. John Updike may have written Rabbit novels for decades, but he only wrote four, and they weren't published monthly. I'm not sure how long a character can continue subject to the publication frequency of the average comic. I personally think that the Rockford Files had one the best runs of any TV show and lasted 123 episodes. If it were a comic book, that would be approximately 10 years, but TV shows come out more often overall and each individual installment generally has more content. But comic books, owned by corporations, don't get to die natural deaths when their creators get tired of them

@@jasontoddsthighholsters4168 okay, again, spoiler warning: the comic is pretty good so I recommend you read it. So, the plan of the big bad is to turn everyone in the multiverse into a being with superpowers, despite all the chaos that will ensure. Do to this, he needs the H Dial (as in Dial H for Hero) and several others that dial different things completely, working in conjunction, and then you can turn the entire multiverse in the DCU like a dial. It's Grant Morrison when not written by Grant Morrison.

I hope after Dark Nights: Death Metal, we can finally get a clear continuity, stories, origins that have a proper mix influence of New Earth and Prime Earth, and instead of being in one or the other it can be a different earth like Rebirth Earth or Central Earth. But that’s my thoughts.
@DoctorMinjinx
@DoctorMinjinx 3 жыл бұрын
Everything was, in my opinion, very straight forward until they began to mix New 52 with Pre-52 (Post Crisis). Unless I'm just uninformed or mistaken, I just find it very confusing. Dr Manhattan reverting Prime Earth back to New Earth would have been the easy fix, but that's not the case (I don't think). So I find myself a little confused, especially after Doomsday Clock's ending. I'm confused as to what exactly changed, besides the stuff shown in the issue (But I'm sure much more than that changed.)

Good explanation. Wonder Woman's Silver-Age (Earth-1) stories begin with Wonder Woman #98 and all previous comics with her are considered to be Earth-2 stories, but you're right that no explanations of this were ever given in the comics. The fact that Wonder Woman's comics did a "salute to the Golden-Age" sporadically from issues 156-169, and it mimicked the TV show's continuity from issues 228-242 makes figuring out which "Earth" any particular story was set on difficult at best.
@1derb0y
@1derb0y 2 жыл бұрын
@Will N > Yes, and the annual JSA/JLA team-ups during that era also featured the Earth-2 Wonder Woman (Diana Trevor). I actually liked the "duckbill" boots when they were drawn right. It's kind of like her tiara - depending on the artist it could like a circlet and other times take up her entire forehead and come to a huge point on top. I think my favorite version of the costume was how George Perez drew it during his run.
@1derb0y
@1derb0y 2 жыл бұрын
@Will N >> I prefer the boots to the sandals, but if she has to wear them I prefer the red over the yellow/gold. And making the =W= look like an eagle by adding a head and a tail was a clever idea. Honestly, I enjoy when superheroes wear variations of their costumes. I can accept that Diana has an entire closet with different boots, outfits and accessories. Some are more liked (by me) than others. For example, I like Diana's bracelets to be how Perez drew them, stopping a few inches from the wrist, and NOT how John Byrne depicted them, going from her wrist all the way to her elbow, taking up her entire forearm. (Especially since they were a one-of-a-kind item, originally forged by Hephaestus from the broken pieces of the Aegis.) I liked Diana's "biker chick" look when Artemis was Wonder Woman precisely because I knew she's be in her traditional costume eventually. Yes, it seems the more they try to "explain" and "fix" continuity errors, the more convoluted it all becomes. Like when Hippolyta went back in time to become the "Golden Age" Wonder Woman. OK, good so far, but then we're told Diana Trevor (Steve's mom) instead of having the desire within herself to be a aviator/soldier, she was "inspired" by the exploits of Hippolyta to do it. That kind of weakens Diana Trevor's agengy. And for what? We get a couple of stories featuring Pollly as the GA WW and the rest is handwaved away. Are we supposed to read old JSA stories and mentally replace Diana with Polly? I guess that could work if you don't think too hard about it. Regarding Donna Troy, they should have stopped when they came up with the Titans of Myth origin. She wasn't rescued from the fire by WW, but the Titans, given powers and false memories etc. totally explains the inconsistencies left over from the Crisis. But they couldn't stop there, they had to just pile on more and more retcons. To explain Donna Troy's origin you need twenty minutes and a whiteboard. Fury (Lyta Trevor-Hall) was never a favorite character of mine, so I never paid attention really, but I imagine her post-Crisis origin is just as convoluted as Donna's.

If I were DC i would just reboot everything again by creating an omniversal war that ends with the Presence saying, "Enough!" and erasing the entirety of DC and creating a brand new universe. Recreate Superman's origin story, Batman's, Wonder Woman's etc. Bring in Doomsday, have him kill Superman, resurrect Superman and have Darkseid be the one that created Doomsday. Establish Darkseid as the main big bad of the new saga and then you move forward from there where you keep building up the new continuity, remaking old and iconic stories (from the old continuities) and modernizing them and changing them up a bit. Like how the MCU is loosely inspired by Marvel Comics, have the new DC timeline be loosely inspired by the past DC stories to create something new and fresh. Meaning that past DC stories would no longer be canon, but the new timeline would take inspiration.

the problem with DC's reboots is that they can't seem to fully commit to them. If they just said that none of their previous comics were canon anymore and stuck to that, a lot of fans would be pissed about that but at least you wouldn't need a PHD in comic book bullshit to understand which stories actually still happened.

While it would have meant a longer and potentially more confusing video, I wish the video had another section that covered the various events that gave fans the perception that DC kept rebooting its universe. Stuff like Hypertime (aka Simpsons Time), partial reboots, re-using the "Crisis" name, etc.

One of the most confusing things about DC's publication and the biggest misconception imo is people think the 'Earth one' and 'earth two' concepts are two planets of the same universe which in fact they are two different earth's from completely different universes. Also the Gods Sphere and Apocalypse etc being outside of the actual multiverse. Consequently the events such as Crisis on Infinite Earths didn't affect the Gods Sphere. I will say a lot can be explained with Neil Gaiman's Sandman comics, how in fact the Presence didn't make the DC multiverse or the Gods Sphere and Source Wall but Michael Demeirgos' power was shaped by Lucifer Morningstar into the reality that is DC comics. Then even beyond all that The Writer wrote all of this so it's even more confusing

Man I miss New Earth. I mean, Rebirth isn't bad and we still had some great stories, I'm not saying we should scrap everything, but I've been revisisting some of the Post Crisis titles and I miss the feeling of "Hey, who is this Superhero that randomly appeared in the JSA book and claimed to be Hal Jordan's cousin?". I miss the JSA, I miss Booster Gold, and I really miss the JLA that wasn't restricted to just the "Big 5" and whoever else they're trying to promote at the time. The JLA should have a variety of members so more heroes can be called upon. It's more fun to see Flash interact with Plastic Man and Zauriel than just Batman and Green Lantern for the 1000th time

When you say DC Rebirth now causes Prime Earth to have some qualities of Pre-flashpoint new earth, do the origin stories of characters like Batman or Superman revert? Like is Batman's canon origin story now Batman Year One or Batman Zero Year? And is Superman's origin story one from Prime Earth or from Pre-flashpoint new earth?

The way I wrap my head around Rebirth is that it's a soft-reboot. Most of the universe stays the same, DC only bring back a few pre-Flashpoint things that people liked, like Superman, Superboy, and Wally West. Marvel did something similar with Secret Wars in 2015 to bring a few characters like Miles Morales and Old Man Logan into the main universe.

7:32 they did you one better and did an anti-reboot that undoes all the prior reboots. Now the DC Multiverse is its own entire Lesser-Omniverse within the Greater-Omniverse and is now even more infinite than it was prior to the first Crisis and going forth every DC comic that has ever been made and ever will be made is now considered canon.

It’s basically Convergence with a lot more retcons, continuity problems, and incohesive timelines all rolled into the main continuity. Specifically everything pre-Crisis, pre-Flashpoint, and post-Flashpoint into the post-Infinite Frontier timeline.
@joshuaingobo1559
@joshuaingobo1559 2 жыл бұрын
@Will NIf the first Crisis ended differently when all the heroes saved the pre-Crisis multiverse, then almost everything pre- and post-Flashpoint would be canon to the pre-Crisis multiverse. This means that all of the characters won’t have their continuities screwed up. Specifically, Superman with is affiliation with the Original Legion, Wonder Woman deciding to reveal her identity to the world and decided to spread peace with her husband Steve Trevor and best friend Etta Candy by her side, the Golden and Silver Age Hawks having their origins canon in their own universe (Golden Age Hawks on Earth-Two, Silver Age Hawks on Earth-One), and Power Girl not being an Atlantian and Supergirl being remembered as the hero who died saving the multiverse alongside the Silver Age Flash. It would also show that the pre-Crisis multiverse will have a legacy of their own (i.e. Wally West becoming Earth-One’s second Flash, the Titans and the JLI replacing the JLA, the Earth-Two Infinity Inc. replacing the JSA, having the Titans and Infinity Inc. do an annual crossover continuing the JLA/JSA crossover, all of Earth-S’s heroes aging in real time and the Billy Batson Captain Marvel revealing his secret identity to his girlfriend Sissy Sommerly, the Earth-Four heroes forming their own JLA as the Sentinels of Justice of the Living Assault Weapons (LAW) and Blue Beetle Ted Kord being married to his gal Tracey (as it was mentioned in a Green Lantern Crisis tie-in) and being best friends with Booster Gold, and all the pre- and post-Flashpoint characters existing in the pre-Crisis multiverse (most on Earth-One and some on Earth-Two, since Earth-One became the basis of New Earth and Prime Earth respectively).

Continuity can be so hard to follow and often times doesn’t matter. For example, the current iron man 2020 comics are a sort of retelling of the old iron man 2020 stories that were about the future because the future is now, but the events play out completely differently partially because everyone is a different age because 40 something years haven’t actually passed in the main timeline even though they should have. Reboots solve this sliding timescale problem but discourage readers from being invested for more than a decade or two which is weird because it’s not like comics are targeted towards kids anymore. DC tried too hard to have everything make sense when it doesn’t need to. A similar case to the Barry Allen flash happened when Marvel rebooted the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon as Marvel’s Spider-Man and had that show crossover with Avenger’s Assemble even though Ultimate Spider-Man already did a crossover with that show. It was never explained and doesn’t make any sense, which I like because continuity should be about what you need to remember rather than everything that has ever happened. Comics follow a stream of consciousness where one thing leads to another directly so the only important continuity is what effect the story directly. Trying to clear up mistakes and oversights is unnecessary and rarely ever leads to actually good stories.

I think the occasional reboot is like a good spring cleaning. Sometimes the convoluted stories, retcons, and overused tropes like Power Creep of heroes, Power Seep of villains, and other just plain bad or lazy writing results in beloved characters moving very far away from what the most well received version of those characters were at their zenith. I could see, instead of erasing old continuities, simply going from one universe within a multiverse, to the next, every 25 years, would help clean things up a bit. Sure, they get messy again, but the cleaning could be done every 25 years. Each time we start at a fresh point. Some stories could be retold, but in different or improved ways. The old universe doesn't cease to exit either. It would be like for 25 years we get a glimpse into Universe 326, then 25 years later it is 327, then 25 years later 328. If a writer thinks of a really good story, but that fits in better in an older continuity, then they story could be designated as fitting into universe that is a rare new story that they once in a great while get visited with.

Denying that a big continuity revision like Infinite Crisis or Rebirth doesn't count as a reboot seems mainly a semantic opinion. They still had the same effect: reverting narrative attention back to origins rather than pushing forward.
