Speed matching locomotives: different brands and decoders! What to look for, what to expect, and the primary CVs you'll want to know about.
Can we do the impossible and match highly unequal models with just some basic knowledge?

Hi C Mastracci , I don’t think I’ll be trying to speed matching two different companies locomotives together. That was a good example of trying to match to completely different style of locomotives. Thanks for sharing. Have a good week. 😎😎 👍

It is truly a PITA. I haven't found a good way to do it - and that consist is three different manufacturers with three way different gearing. the easiest thing to do is stay in the same manufacturer - you might still need to tweak a bit, but it'll be much closer to start! the decoder difference is huge, too. Enjoy!

I’ll definitely have to take points from this now that I have a huge layout lol

This was a very entertaining and informative video. I've never understood much about DCC operations, but this video has pushed that knowledge along. Your speed matching reminds me of playing with Arduino and sensors. The numbers 255 and 128 were prominent in that application too. Thank you for your efforts, I feel your frustration and pain with the number games.

You're spot on - i do believe Arduino operates of the same hexadecimal coding. it can be very frustrating especially if your DCC system doesn't simplify it the way the Digitrax system does.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. Looks like I made the right choice buying two of the same scale trains locos.

you really can't go wrong with ScaleTrains so count that as a win for awesome locos and for not having to speed match!

@@AlleghenyNorthern Honestly they are less expensive than Kato DCC Sound offerings and others. Its a no brainier to buy them.

Good info! Watched over 3 mornings. These were very hard selections to speed match for sure. I usually push 8 to silence my sound ones thisbin turn eliminates the start delay. Then i juat throttle to 1 and wait a bit when I have them hooked together and using in real time (to let the sound unit "spool up")

The problem is - i so love that startup sequence and all those sounds. you can actually set the V5 decoders not to play a startup or have delay and then they match right up but i'm simply to attached to that functionality to sacrifice it. eventually, i'll upgrade all my main locos to the v5 decoders and problem solved!

definitely do it - you're not going to regret it. that is until you have a nervous breakdown speed matching locos BUT once you get it - it's fantastic. and to be honest, this video is worse than most attempts at speed matching and i did that on purpose with three different manufacturers and two different decoders - it's the perfect storm of "holy hell why did i do this" just to show worst case.

I used to have 7 digitrax sound decoders and ended up replacing 5 of those with ESU LockSound. The rest of my locomotives have LokSound except for a Bachman with Econami and another Bachmann with TCS WowSound and a BLI with Paragon 4. I speed matched them as best as I could but problem is to match them exactly with ESU is almost impossible so what I do is bring my throttle to 2% and wait for both to catch up to each other and then start speeding up. They all stop about the same. But even startup difference between Paragon 4 and ESU LokSound is very difficult to match because of the sound files used. I will only buy locomotives with ESU LokSound going forward. It was too much of a pain before and besides, the sound on Digitrax is pure junk anyways. I'll replace the other two (Kato P42 with Digitrax) at a later time with ESU LokSound. I also used to have some older Kato locomotives where I had to use TCS decoders which I sold on eBay. Again, my rule for DCC going forward is only to use ESU LokSound.

can't agree more. ESU has the market on sound decoders. BLI is not my favorite to begin with but even their decoders don't seem anywhere near as advanced as LokSound V5 decoders - from the settings, to the control, to the sound and movement interaction. I'm glad ScaleTrains and Atlas have adopted them as factory standards for their DCC & sound equipped locos - their audio library is truly remarkable.

If you setup consist locomotives to a consist address in LokProgrammer, is there a way to have the decoder also respond to the locomotives own address? Say, you have two locomotives which are 200 and 210 setup to consist address 20. So, when you use locomotive address 20 in the controller then both locomotives will respond since they're in that consist. Say you want to then run locomotive 200 by itself and leave 210 behind. Is there a way to set it up so that when you use locomotive address 200 in the controller then that locomotive will respond independently? Is that something that can be setup in LokProgrammer?

@AlleghenyNorthern Ай бұрын
I don't use the LokProgrammer, so I'm not sure. i do know in a consist address you can set various features to different locos in a consist such as light and sound functions but i've not seen someone actually adjust the motor performance. if so, you wouldn't need to speed match as the consist setting could do it each time you set up a consist. to my knowledge, that type of setup isn't available... yet. however, to have the ability for a consisted decoder to read back train actions and automatically compensate would be fantastic. i could see that being a future option at the rate tech is updating.

So would a very low throttle start, as a operator procedure negate the sound-file lag with a long train?
@AlleghenyNorthern
@AlleghenyNorthern Ай бұрын
sort of but not completely. the ESU decoder wants a little bit of juice before it starts it's symphony so usually the other two locos are already out of the gate. it does, however, minimize the amount of shoving/grinding the speedy locos do. the sounds are about 2-3 seconds, and that's a lot of time when things are moving!
