Unless there was a gas to carry the sound wave or a tube that reached all the way to the space ship he couldn't have heard it. The only way for a sound to carry through the vaccum of space without a medium is for it to be an extremely deep sound with a wavelength so long it can reach thousands of miles to propogate through other material.
