DCI 1984 Broadcast of the top 5 corps. This comes from an old VHS tape, so it's not long on quality. It includes live performances, commentary by Steve Rondinaro & Richard Santo (former director of the Garfield Cadets) and the Grand Finale.

Seeing the shows of all the corps and then watching Garfield, it's apparent how Garfield was in a class by itself. This show turned me into a Garfield fan when I saw it back in 1984. No props - just a corps performing a difficult book, exposed soloist, an innovative drill and an overall show design that was ahead of its time. This will forever be the most ICONIC drum corps show ever. It changed the face of the activity. I get emotional every time I watch it. A well-deserved part of their three-peat.

Garfield only won by .10, which I cannot believe (should have been a bit more). It was basically Cadet's GE versus BD's percussion. I love this show!

Joe... 84 G'field is my all time favorite corps & show, but class of their own? Don't tell BD that. Greatest corps & show to ever not win a championship. Respectfully disagreeing, while totally agreeing on how Garfield was.

@@raymondfallon7429 Absolutely. BD brass was on fire. IMO shoulda had the Ott outright, not tied w/ Garfield and SCV. Like you said, NOTHING against Cadets... Amazing, super emotional show...especially opener and closer...Loved them both... AND Vanguard...that front in Tender Land tho....Holy God....

1983 and 84 were the first years of DCI that got me in to the activity, and I fell in love. I started marching in 1986. 1984 and 1993 are probably my favorite over all years but other individual shows stick out since then. I absolutely love these shows. I found myself getting overly emotional seeing the end of SCVs and Garfield's shows again even on this dated recording. Yes it's hard to compare the production values, rules changes, and recording quality to todays performances, but these shows from the 80's always reach down and tear something out then show it to me as I smile.

I love the PBS broadcasts - wish they still did it. I was interviewed in 1989 at the DCM championships in Dekalb, IL. I wasn't expecting anything but then saw it show up on the 1989 Finals PBS show. It was a segment about defining drum corps as a sport.

god forbid flo marching isnt the only way to watch the shows what would they do without requiring you to pay for each show. I also would love to see DCI on TV but i at the same time am begging for a return to how these older shows were.

This was one of the years when I was marching. We were all blown away by the radical marching changes instituted by Garfield. People don't realize that what they take for granted now, had to start somewhere. It had started to show up the previous two years, but this was when Garfield shook up the entire Drum Corps World. If only someone had warned the TV producer about that surprise company front during "Tonite".

Would you happen to have the 86 PBS broadcast to post??? There is a segment on the Original PBS broadcast that shows clips of corps 6-12…that was cut from the video tapes that Video Express released later. I wore my vhs tape of the original broadcast out, and have been looking for that short segment ever since. I have all of the full corps performances on the Legacy DVD from 86, but I would love to be able to watch that short segment for sentimental reasons.
