Add "prayer" to the checklist for compressor stalls.
@jejelerider32784 жыл бұрын
As a F14A pilot said on the DCS forum, he had only one compressor stall in his life. It didn't magically stall, it stalled if you did not follow the preconisation (not native english sorry). If you fly well, you will not have issue. The problem of these engine is the lack of thrust, it's a real downgrade compare to the F110-GE-400.

Lack of thrust is mostly at high altitudes. Low down the Pratt is good. The much heavier F-111 was a mach 1.7ish jet at sea level.

@@Power5 and dry thrust. The f110ge produced much more dry thrust and more thrust at low speed. Iirc takeoffs in the A were always done in zone 5 AB whereas we dont touch the AB for takeoffs in the B
@Power54 жыл бұрын
@@asancoon2363 also true. I mean a decade of engine advancement in that era was enormous. And the 110 was 20 years newer than the Pratt. Still says something about the parts low down performance. Don't race an A model on the deck or you will be upset when it eventually flys by. 😁

How is the F-14A different from the F-14B? Earlier model?
@mckseal4 жыл бұрын
F-14 A has weaker engines, slightly different structure (weaker), slightly more capable at pulling G at Mach 2.0. It also has a different RWR and slightly less computing stuff behind the scenes. But, most importantly, the F-14 A's engines suffered from compressor stalls - like the one that kills Goose in Top Gun.
@JETZcorp4 жыл бұрын
The engines are the big headline. A lot of the other differences between the two were applied to both models as updates over time. Some B models started life as an A and got upgraded (originally called A+), and others were new-build. It was not uncommon for an A model to have more modern updated systems than a B flying at the same time, just based on the haphazard way the Navy updated its Tomcat fleet.
@GoldPicard4 жыл бұрын
The A had the Pratt& Whitney TF30 engines from the factory which the Navy accepted on the grounds of getting the Tomcat into the fleet quicker than having to delay initial procurement Grumman while they were still working out the bugs to put in the General Electric F110-400 engines into the airframe, Grumman had designed and planned on using the TF30's for the initial production run because the F110 was still not available in large numbers yet(1967-69) and the TF30's were because they are the same engines that are in the A-7 and F-111( and remember the Tomcat was a design offshoot of the F-111B under Defense Secretary McNamara). The plan was for both Grumman and the Navy to fund replacing the TF30 with the F110 while they were doing the initial roll out and then retrofit the earlier birds with the newer engines as they became available and remember the F110 is the same motor as in the F-16 so you have basically two Falcons worth of raw power in the pilot's left hand there. And as well engines some avionics were upgraded namely the RHAW stuff as LANTIRN integration plus the wing glove vanes were removed at the factory since the help in the transonic range they provided was negligible and not worth the additional maintenance.

Peregrine 7 so why would ppl used a older less performing aircraft?
@mckseal4 жыл бұрын
@@kwilliams3161 Why do people fly WW2 flight sims when they could an F/A 18? Heck why fly the F14? It's a plane from the 70's/80's. Firstly, the challenges make it interesting. Secondly, the A is 10 years older than the B. So it comes up against different enemies. The F14B can rival many of the newer fighters, slightly worse engines doesn't change that. But when the F14A came out the Mig29 was still 7 years away. This thing was perhaps more of a beast back then, and it makes some interesting dogfights.

Phelens Sorry I may have a bit of an exaggeration of the F-14A cockpit. I think some F-14As get the ALR-67 Indicators because F-14As are outfitted with antennas on the portside nose-gear. I don’t think there’s a reason for Heatblur to change the cockpit. Edit: I researched and found out that F-14As (block 60 and 65, some of the later block variants) have GPS Dome, UHF Antenna, TACAN Antenna, NACA gun vents, and Radar Warning System on glove vanes, and port-side nose gear, same capabilities as the F-14B. As I said before, there is no point in changing the pilot and rio cockpits entirely. www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234910566-tomcats-101-article/ www.flickr.com/photos/128627782@N05/16914706051
