A good rule of thumb that was taught to me by an Mi-8 engineer is to keep the rate of descent and your airspeed so that your altitude matches your speed. So 100 meters height = 100km/h. What that means is that when you get into ETL, you're near or lower than 50 meters doing < 50km/h which will ease your transition into a hover as well as keeping the landing site fixed in the same frame of reference you draw up when making your approach.

brilliant tutorial, the entire series in fact is excellent. Just wanted to mention that the kind of approach ending in the hover close to ground that you showed was what I was doing when I first started flying the R22. My instructor let me do a couple of them, then said this would be fine, if we were to fly people into a hot LZ or something, otherwise we should avoid this sort of very fast very shallow approaches, very little room to react if anything were to go wrong. So instead we kinda want a bit steeper angle, with bleeding speed a bit earlier. I was taught to aim for the descent to end in a hover, at good ground effect altitude, but with a bit of forward speed for directional stability, meaning in this case if the pad was your touchdown target, you should be in a stable hover in ground effect a few meters before it, with some small forward momentum remaining. This avoids the hard pull on the nose at the very last moment, protecting your boom and tail rotor, and keeping visual of the pad, lessen the need to add massive amounts of collective in a very short time (I don't even think the engineers would forgive such blade AoA increase speed unless an emergency, it really stresses out the transmission), also preventing the need for very fast input of right pedal. Like you said, a lot happens really really fast, and with 10 tons of hot heavy metal you want to give yourself as much room for error as possible. Nice flying though, I learned a lot about the Hip systems watching your tutorials, great work!

For two years the only helo I had was the Huey. I got very proficient with it. I could do just about anything. Land on a destroyer in 5 foot seas and 20 mph wind. No problem. Then I got the Mi8. Throw EVERYTHING you know out the window. I was like a pig on roller skates. VRS being the bane of my Hip career. But, like everything else in DCS, you can crash as much as you like. I spent a week figuring out all the details. Wish I would have seen this video. But when you learn all these things on your own, they tend to become instinct much faster that if shown how to do it. Nice video, well explained without excruciating detail. Some go WAY too in-depth when teaching. I don't give a shit who invented the R-831 mid-range VHF air radio , just show me how to use the damn thing! lol

Another very nice video. I really like the style and narration! Content wise: Maximum speed for rolling landing is 50km/h according to the manual. 80-90 is a bit high. Also, it would be great to see a landing out of pattern hight with a steady glide. Keep up the great work!

One question, always when I was flying I felt that the autopilot wanted to take me to a place rather than keep the flight stable, deactivating the "autopilot adjustment" option in special options, I think it will solve the problem, but also there is a key to ask the engineer to adjust it (a voice comes out), what are these 2 options really doing? Thanks for the material, your tutorials are currently the best there is on youtube and clearly deserve more reproductions.

An extra question, on the second landing you have the correction level at 50%, I have noticed that on occasions it is not necessary to have as much engine power (load, total weight, etc.), is that why?

Awesome video. I'm back here for the 3rd time after entering VRS and crashing on the 3rd landing site in the first mission of the Spring Tension campaign 😤🤬 I really wish DCS had a way to save your bloody game! I have owned the Hip for years now, but am really just learning it now. I wonder though if the VRS isn't over-modeled as it doesn't seem to me that pilots IRL (from the videos I've seen) struggle this much with it?
@vsTerminus

I used to crash on that landing a lot too. It's a tough one. Biggest things I can suggest are getting comfortable with trim, and with transition to hover. Practice slowing down without gaining or losing altitude, take it slow, and remember not to move the collective too fast. Then this landing is just a transition to hover and slowly lower yourself down (1-2 m/s) until you touch down. I'm working on a tutorial for that, so keep an eye out for it in the next couple weeks hopefully.

Does the two visual displays in the upper right and left of the screen aid in landing the Mi8? In landing the Mi8 in DCS, I find it very difficult to arrest forward movement of this bird. It seems like the Mi8 wants to always be moving forward.

@5:48 - add SIGNIFICANT collective. Very important.
@vsTerminus
@vsTerminus 3 жыл бұрын
I think that catches a lot of people off guard. It's not a small amount of collective at all, but you also have to be smooth with it or you'll lose your generators lol. Honestly there's nothing to do but practice until you get a feel for it.

BTW: I have about 10 flight hours in the huey, so I know I just need to practice.
@vsTerminus
@vsTerminus 3 жыл бұрын
I can do that, for sure. I've got a tutorial in progress for transitioning to hover without changing altitude, which is exactly what you need for that pad. You have no ground effect there so you basically just transition to hover and then make your way over to the pad and set down. Some tips: slow down. Approach the hospital at 100-120kph. Don't aim for the pad, aim to slow down and stop in front of the building where you can use it as a reference point for your hover. Stabilize. Trim. Ease forward until you're over the pad, and remember that your nose wheel is under your chair so you should touch down feeling like you're sitting pretty close to the edge of the pad. Also don't be afraid to use Pause and F2 camera to compare where you think you are with where you really are.
@vsTerminus
@vsTerminus 3 жыл бұрын
I just realized I gave you some sort of Mi-8 specific tips there and you were asking about the Huey. So, try about 60kts on approach, and because you're a lot smaller you don't have to park so far forward. And like you say, it's just practice. That landing is a hard one by any standard. Good luck!
@Welther47
@Welther47 3 жыл бұрын
@@vsTerminus After having a think, I planned to practice a slow approach at 500 feet to nothing. That way I have room to get out of a VRS. I have seen how pilots land on platforms in real life... I'm gonna try it hehe

@gregorypruitt5068 4 жыл бұрын
When you landed on the pad, did you apply any trim during the landing? I find it nearly impossible to prevent this module from wanting to move forward, especially during hover attempts. Also, you say that buffeting means slowing down to fast? Do you have a video on this?
@vsTerminus
@vsTerminus 4 жыл бұрын
Good questions :) I don't typically trim often while landing. I'll usually trim for forward level flight at a fairly slow speed (around 120kph or less?), and then just hand fly it in from there. Once I'm down I hit Trim-Reset. Every pilot is different. Some trim constantly, some never trim at all, others like to trim-reset before they come in to land. I think it's whatever makes you comfortable. The Mi-8 wants to go forward because the main rotor tilts forward. Your trim for a hover should be a little bit aft and a little bit right. I have a video on hovering that goes over everything you need to know for that. The buffeting doesn't mean you're slowing down too fast, it just means that you're slow enough where you're going to lose "Effective Translational Lift" and you'll need to add some collective to compensate for it. I have a video on "Vortex Ring State" that might be helpful with that one.

ooh man great! one question, that is still getting me you are constantly talking about the descent rate on the VVI. But what are you doing to control that?? and keeping it constant.
@vsTerminus
@vsTerminus 4 жыл бұрын
Collective. Use your collective to control your altitude. Add more collective if you need to climb (or slow your descent), reduce your collective to descent (or slow your climb).
@longriflem14
@longriflem14 4 жыл бұрын
Roger ok I can see the change now But I am Kinda spinning.when I try to adjust.or I bubble up. How do you keep it level like you do when doing it.I am already level
@vsTerminus
@vsTerminus 4 жыл бұрын
@@longriflem14 Regarding the spinning, whenever you add collective you should also add some right anti-torque pedal. When you reduce your collective you should reduce that, or add some left anti-torque pedal. This is because when you add collective you increase torque and the amount the heli twists as a result. The pedals help to counteract that.

Do you lower the throttle when landing? I usually run 100% throttle.
@vsTerminus
@vsTerminus 10 ай бұрын
No, I don't touch the throttle unless I want to shut the engines down. In a scenario where you wanted to roll the throttle down after landing but not to shut the engines down, you'd want to first fire up the APU and switch on the APU Gen so that when your rotor RPM comes down you don't lose all your systems that require generators.
