Honestly, I find the Mi-8 the easiest helo to fly. It's heavier which helps me keep stability and the easiest way to avoid vrs when lower to the ground is to keep the decent rate less than 3 m/s. As far as chopping your tail off, if that happens just use the cyclic to keep the mi-8 from flipping over, concentrate on the vertical velocity indicator, and move the collective up and down slightly until you land. The Huey is a pain in the backside for me. I can't get that to hover to save my life. I don't know how many times I backed into a tree or sideswiped a building. Never a problem in the Mi-8.

I only have the Ka-50, UH-1, and Mi-8. With the autopilot assistance, I think the Ka-50 is by far the easiest to fly - even kind of sterile in comparison. But I do agree that the Mi-8 is easier to fly than the UH-1, which feels lighter and less stable. Also, the UH-1 is vulnerable to mast bumping, and the Mi-8 is not, due to mechanical differences in how the rotors are attached. All that being said, the flight model of the Mi-8 makes it feel fantastic to fly in DCS. Possibly the best flight model I have experienced in a sim.

Of all the modules I have, the Hip is for me the most fun for some reason. And the one that needs multicrew the most. I flew her in Blue Flag 3.4 along with the Shar, easily the best transport to date. And the bugs have been minor. They have added numerous little things to her over the years. Fans, compartment heater, gunners.

I just got this as my first module + Syria and I flew the Huey for hours in trial and this for a few minutes. The Huey is 10 times easier for the single reason that you VRS this and or shake it to bits on landing, all other aspects, its fine to me. So I will have to learn the landings, but beyond that, I'm in love. I jumped in the Huey and I can fly it like I have flown for months because I have flown so much in MSFS in recent months and its not that different actually. But this heli is a different beast, way heavier than anything in MSFS, closest thing is the H145 and that thing has so much computers helping you out you could jump out of it and it will likely be standing at home base waiting for you when you get your behind home xD

I would divvy up the DCS aircraft between rotary and fixed-wing aircraft. They are very different experiences. If you want the DCS helo that is the most fun to fly (Disclaimer: I haven't flown the Gazelle), I would recommend the Mi-8 (it's also 20% faster than the UH-1). Cruising at low level, hugging the terrain, is a lot of fun. Don't get me wrong, the UH-1 is also fun to fly, but a bit more twitchy and temperamental. If you want the helo which is best at killing stuff, go with the Ka-50. But it does feel easy and a bit sterile after the UH-1/Mi-8, which makes sense due to the autopilot assistance it has and the coaxial counter-rotating rotors. Regardless, I would highly recommend at least getting one helo in DCS if you are at all interested. It might not be your thing, or you might love it. And they are the most realistic helos I have flown in any sim (and I do have a tiny amount of experience flying a helo IRL).

Err, the navigation computer is actually extremely easy to use. You just dial in the desired heading and distance, hit "on", and the distance will tick down to 0 as you fly. Since it's using a doppler radar, it can measure your true ground speed and direction, so it knows if the wind is blowing you off course (assuming you're not over water). The top row of numbers tell you how far off course to the left or right you are, and the drift needle tells you how far from forward your true flight path is, so just adjust your course as necessary to make the side deviation go to 0 and deflect your heading an equal and opposite amount from the planned heading as the drift needle reads.

I bought the MI-8 after getting my first heli the KA-50. I thought the KA-50 was the easiest to learn (flying, not system learning) but was surprised I found the MI-8 to be easier. I'm a total noob so I thought a coaxial rotor heli would be easy compared to the rest but i found under and over steering more apparent on the KA-50 than on the MI-8. Flying these 2 helis back to back required a change in control inputs maybe I should stick to learning one first. Oh yes the MI-8 also seemed much faster than the KA-50 despite the former being a rescue/troop transport heli compared to the latter being an attack helicopter.

"Really a Major missed oppurtunity with no multi-crew." Multi-crew was about 2.5 years away when the Mi-8 was released in 2013. The L-39 was the first module with multi-crew in 2016. "This is supposed to be a simulator after all." It is a simulator. Simulators do not simulate absolutely everything, btw. They are approximations. Even simulators running on the most powerful computers in the world don't simulate anything perfectly. The only simulator released which even approximates fluid dynamics for air is a 1995(!!!) simulator called Flight Unlimited (just the original 1995 version - the sequels ended up being completely re-written).

@@antongrahn1499 The multi-crew code is something that needed to be written by Eagle Dynamics, as part of the DCS engine. Which is why the first multi-crewed module was the L-39, developed by Eagle Dynamics itself. The Mi-8 was developed by Belsimtek, a partner of Eagle Dynamics. Belsimtek still lists multi-crew as something that they plan on introducing 'at a later date' for both the UH-1 and Mi-8. Sure, it has been over 3 years since the L-39 was released, that doesn't mean it won't happen, either.

I have to agree with 2 of the GR reviewers - this model crashes too easily - descend vertically any quicker than an escalator and you will get vrs and plummet. Probably why Cap does rolling landings in this. This cant be true to life or we would see MI8 wrecks all over the place - or maybe that is why it needs a 3rd crew member - to leap forward and kick the cyclic to get out of the stale air!

The handbook flight parameters are pretty clear: "POWER-ON VERTICAL DESCENT A power-on vertical descent from an altitude of 10 m down to the ground is permissible in all conditions. From an altitude of 110 m down to 10 m, a vertical descent is only permissible when a glideslope approach cannot be performed due to obstacles or out of tactical considerations. Descent from the helicopter’s service ceiling down to 110 m must be performed on a glideslope and within airspeed limitations. In a vertical descent from an altitude of 110 m down to 10 m, the descent rate may not exceed 3 m/sec. If the descent rate increases beyond 3 m/sec, smoothly increase collective to arrest the descent rate. If engine power is insufficient to arrest the descent and maintain main rotor RPM within limits, transi-tion out of the vertical descent to a glideslope descend or forward flight to gain airspeed. From an altitude of 10 m down to the ground, continually reduce the rate of descent so it does not exceed 0.2 m/sec at touchdown."
