DCS Tutorial - UH-1H Huey Autorotation

A tutorial on autorotation with the DCS Huey. Let me know in the comments if it helped!
Take note that a better version will be uploaded afterwards based on the U.S. Army procedures manual.

Don't forget to adjust the collective to prevent main rotor overspeed. It would be more helpful as a tutorial if you were to display the control position indicator, as it's impossible to see what you're doing with the collective / cyclic / pedals throughout the manoeuvre.

hey man. just browsing through some video's and stumbled upon yours. i got dcs because i don't have the money to keep flying the bell 47 and the huey is just its bigger brother. so i thought i could keep my skills up with dcs. anyways what they thaught me during my cpl was a big flare at the height of tree tops and a little bit of collective, this will take most of your speed and stop most of your descend. then just like you take it to a hover just like during landing with a bit more of a flare then put her down quick! hueys are known for after putting them down after a autorotation they have enough inertia/momentum in the rotor blades to pick hem back up in the hover and turn them 180 degrees and put them back down. that'll give you something to practice. when you can do that you have mastered it.

Jarret Mounteney A fair point indeed, I'll think about it. In my experience, the control position display is not that helpful. My eyes are usually glued to my instruments most of the time as they are pretty much the only thing that matter, My stick input is based on what I read on my instruments, not muscle or positional memory. Cyclic/collective/pedal inputs are done instinctively based on your speed, altitude and climb/descent rate. I think it's something that someone has to try for himself rather than watch on a graph. 'Might not be everyone's cup of tea. I tried watching videos that taught how to fly the Huey with the control position indicator, but they didn't really help me in understanding what to do.

Yeah I agree with that, I never use it at all, it just makes things worse for me, I watch my instruments rather, that little red box just distracts me from what is really happening. This was one of the better training videos I have seen bro, good job, extremely helpful.

Holy tits your flares are high, try flaring at 50 feet holding the tail 10 feet of the ground and once your speed reduces, cyclic forward and pull the collective. Like another person said, give the collective a pitch pull to prevent the overspeed.

Chris Peat I don't know what NVidia inspector is, so I probably wasn't using it. The only mod installed was the Skullz Huey sound mod.

Chuck Owl Ok thanks! Just so you know NVidia inspector is just a application which allows you to bump up the visual quality of games (like add more anti-aliasing). I was just wondering if you were using it because it looked like you had some nice AA on. Thanks for answering anyway.

You forgot the right pedal input in the procedure notes when the throttle or fuel is cut.

You are actually constantly crashing, since that would happen if you did it for real. :) Autorotations usually end by skidding with some forward speed...

Technically, any landing you can walk away from is a decent landing...

Oh god... on a real autorrotation you would have wrecked your Huey! You just cant go to the ground like a rock after the flare!!! you cant lose horizontal speed... you must touch the ground like an airplane... Too much collective at once makes you float and after you lose RPM you go down HARD... Its not the same to autorrotate at 90 or 60 knots, becouse that change in speed make you go far or near to the position you had lost power... depending on how far is the spot you choose to land is the speed yoy need... you should also try to autorrotate in a suitable surface, not in a upgoing hill...

Those are all fair points indeed. I did indeed change my autorotation techniques since then... keep in mind that I was barely capable of flying the Huey at that time, much has changed since then (I have become more experienced, the flight model has changed and the ground collision model has been much improved). Back in those days in 2014, the second you would start sliding on the grass at more than 15 kts you'd rip your skids apart or you would "bump" the nose forward and smack your main rotor on the ground while doing cartwheels. I find your comment on the suitable surface interesting: most of the time you would have to perform an autorotation in real life, you usually don't have the luxury of having the best possible surface. It is good practice to make the best out of the worst situation possible.

yeah i dont meant you need to practice always on a runway, but i think you could have chosen a best spot to land... but the video is old and you brougth a good point on that...
