Hey guys! Today we have a video I have been thinking about making for quite awhile now. As a content creator, mission designer and event host, I am asked by many community members two interesting questions quite often:
Can DCS help me learn to fly in real life? As well as I am currently learning to fly, should I stop playing DCS and play Microsoft Flight Simulator Instead?
The answer to these questions are not as straight forward as you might expect and today we are all about delving deep into why DCS World is a great learning tool for priming prospective flight students on the mental skills required to fly an aircraft in real life, and why it does a better job at this than Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020.
While I was working as a full time CFII, or Certified Flight Instructor Instrument, I had 4 students who were big PC Gamers, 2 were avid DCS World fans, and the other 2 were Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 players and the differences between them as well as in comparison to those who had never used home flight simulator products was extremely interesting and rather shocking to me.
Obviously pilots don't learn to fly in a F-14B Tomcat or F/A-18C Hornet or F-15E Strike Eagle, but we also talk about why that doesn't matter, and how flying your specific aircraft in a home flight sim can actually create negative training and expectation bias.
We will be breaking down why DCS World is a fantastic choice for prospective pilots into these chapters:

0:06:00 - DCS & Situational Awareness
0:09:30 - DCS & Intuitive Flying Skills

While I know everyone will have some strong opinions about this topic, this is all based on my experience with teaching students how to fly in real life who both did and did not use flight simulation games or software. It is my opinion that DCS World for all the aforementioned reasons is the best choice!

Dude, we traded comments on this topic about a year ago!! I use DCS for both recreation (late night brain erase) and helping me with SA and procedures/cockpit discipline (CRM for single pilot) when flying GA aircraft. Thanks for finally making this video!!!!! I agree with you 100%. And thanks for continuing to publish your videos on DCS.

The answer is yes, and this is coming from a person who is currently in training. The flight models of the aircraft in DCS are so good that I learned a lot of lessons about trim management, spin recovery, and maneuvering behind the power curve. It definitely helps that I'm working a DA20, which uses a stick, but it did help back when I got my PPL in a 172. Heck my examiners for both my private checkride and my stage check yesterday complimented my aircraft control during landing, as I just know instinctively how to balance pitch and power from my time in the C-101 and now Mirage F1, which require very precise and quick movements to make a smooth landing. Another thing my examiners complimented me on was my Situational Awareness simply off of Tower/Approaches communications. Hell, my stage check yesterday brought me within 5000ft of a KC-135 out of Scott AFB, and I knew about him and his altitude from 7 miles away. This sortof gets into the geometry of flying as well, as I usually know where I'm going to be positioned by ATC, and can plan accordingly. So in my experience, DCS is a huge help for mastering the quirks of flying, maintaining SA, and maintaining professionalism. Or at least it has been for me.

Dude, I only fly helicopters IRL, but the Mi8 flight model is sooo-so good (as in realistic), that after taking a break of 18 months in my real training and doing only DCS flying, I got right back into the cockpit with absolutely no skill fade. Even my instructor was like wtf. On a side note, I got to fly an EASA certified Mi8 sim for training military pilots, I felt at home. The only thing I will say is that for you to reap absolute benefits, you will need VR, as depth perception is everything when operating close to the ground. Doing emergency procedures in DCS is absolutely priceless, as you can program situations that no real world instructor would dare slap on his students, not to mention the possibility to alter atmospheric conditions at the touch of a button, crosswind landings, gusts, low ceilings, rain, icing conditions, inadvertent flight into IMC etc.

This comment needs to be pinned, etteched in to a large pice of metal, put up as a plack, I dunno, something! I keep hearing the Mi8 is realistic and the people that really know seem to all agree the Mi8 is superb, and I have no helicopter experience IRL my self and Mi8 was my first module and I still think its the best out of all of them, Apache and Hind after that, all are pretty good and is constantly improving but yeah, I love the Mi8 to bits! One day I hope I get to go in a real helicopter!

SpudKnocker, you are one of my favorite veteran DCS content providers teaching me my next DCS Skills. I started DCS, because #1, I worked on F-15 A, B, C, and D's in the early 80's. I traveled the world with these birds and their pilots as a Comm, Nav, Penetration Systems Specialist. So I'm now 60ish... I want to keep my brain sharp and push back neural slowdowns that will naturally occur in all of us, by keeping my brain highly active. I'm using the same skills a Basketball Pro uses when he steps to the line to swish a free throw. Fine motor skills, quick decisions, muscle memory, and learning new things every single day that go on in a mission. I really respect the fact you are a real pilot and translate that experience back into your videos at the right time with the right amount. You hit the nail on the head with this video, on the categories. All of these categories I am designing missions that specifically work on these abilities, in short small iterations to teach my brain and muscles to master this subliminally and move on to putting bombs on targets. Such as Situational Awarness! Great videos, great content, thanks for what you do for the rest of us out here. You never knew DCS was also Neural Medication or Supplement that is keeping some of us young and alert! I wish you a fantastic Holiday Season. The Razbam F-15E rocks! Sometimes sending back to flashbacks of when I actually was popping panels, R&R boxes, and conducting successful Red Ball Maintence for pilots trying to hit the range in 15 minutes after the plane failed a BIT. Fly true, hit hard, return safe.

My CFI, who wasn’t familiar with DCS, has complemented me multiple times regarding my airmanship and how fast I’m progressing versus his other students. Very interesting and useful! You should do more of these real-life application videos. We recently took a family trip to Florida, and I was just talking to my wife today about the fact that my situational awareness of finding and knowing the general coordinates of the airport, taxiway, etc. Before DCS, I basically kind of had no idea where I was going, but I found myself: preparing, navigating, and estimating when descent would occur. We also fly Delta, so they give you a lot of information about the flight through the monitor on the back of the seat.

Being an extensive user of both DCS and MSFS, plus being a (lapsed) 500+ hour PPL pilot, I’d have to say that these two sims can help with learning to fly, but shouldn’t be your ab initio learning experience if you plan to learn to fly in real life. You can pick up the basic observation and situation awareness skills in flight sims, but if you’re serious about learning to fly irl, your initial training should be with a good instructor, so you don’t pick up a few hundred hours of bad habits that your instructor will then have to hammer out of you. The excellent thing about flight sims, especially MSFS, is that you can fly practice circuits in the same aircraft that you’re taking lessons in, in the traffic pattern of the same airfield where your school is, and you can then use the sim to lock in your most recent training. I wish MSFS and VR where at the place they are now back 25 years ago when I first took to the skies in a light aircraft

Great video! o7 I just know what I fear most and would feel being the scariest part, its not the flying thats for sure, its communication and awareness / spotting. I went for a basic introductory 2 hour session as a birthday gift from my dad. Got into the plane and kept my mouth shut while listening to the instructor, I went into it assuming I didn't know a darned thing about anything. As we were flying around his instructions just abruptly stopped 15 minutes in and we started talking about fishing and hunting while he was telling me where to turn and what speed to maintain for the rest of the flight. After landing we got out and he asked if I had flown before and I told him about DCS. I exclusively fly the P-51 and the F-14.

Been flying sims since the dawn of computers, literally, my first flight in a Cessna I took the controls from take off to finals, as instructed by the instructor, my only core mistakes were trying to "fly" the plane too much in heavy winds, instead of simply trimming it up and letting her fly herself :) I also have had my daughter in my setup here, she has flown many times in DCS full realism, landing etc loving it, she is also an Air Cadet and had her first flight this year, the instructor again let her fly the whole time as she took to it easily and instantly, these sims are absolutely worth "something". She is joining the RAF as an officer once she finishes sixth form - on ATC tho, even tho I told her to shoot for Pilot if that's what she really wants :)

Hey, I recently did my first discovery flight working towards a potential career in aviation. (airline pilot, or maybe the military route) keep in mind im only 15 so im pretty young and new to the aviation world. However, I have invested hundreds maybe even thousands of hours into MSFS. I can't even fathom how much a sim helped me. Everything surprisingly came pretty naturally and the cfi was pretty impressed. Some things I would like to add or mabye just piggyback off of your video. Situational awareness is huge in my opinion. Taxiways were in my opinion the most overwhelming part of flying. MSFS really didnt help with that, but from watching your vids a little bit DCS probably does a better job. finally rudder and physics are also big. Getting used to the flow and energy of your aircraft is something microsoft could possibly work on because it is completely different irl. This video was quite helpful and really makes me want to try DCS.

Instructor: So what kind of flight experience do you have? Me: I have 10 minutes at the controls of a Cessna 172 from an intro flight, a one hour lesson with the other instructor last week, and about 10,000 hours in various home simulators, mostly DCS\LOMAC\IL2\FSX. Instructor: No offence, but all that simulator experience, that's 0 flight experience. Me: Fair enough. [I performed the take off, flew tow formation, flew around, practiced stalls, shallow turns to headings, steep turns to headings, pattern, and my first landing]. Instructor: Wow, I can tell that simulator experience has REALLY paid off! It's like teaching you a new plane instead of teaching you how to fly. I amazed my instructors when I soloed in just under 4 hours of training. They say if you're good, a natural, you should be able to solo in 15-20 hours. Whenever I asked my instructors how I was doing compared to other students, they'd just laugh and say something like, "Well, we're not going to worry about that". I feel it is important to stress that quality controls and head tracking are force multipliers for training, but not required. However, skipping a control device, like rudder pedals, can cause negative muscle memory. I'm sure your school wouldn't be too happy with you taking a tour off the side of the runway, wrecking over some lights, AND twisting the grip off of their stick\yoke trying to correct like you're at home.

After a few years of DCS I got over a half hour of real military helicopter sim time at a Navy base. Not only was I able to fly, but I could do so with authority. Hot dogging, emergency procedures and even a successful autorotation to the ground. Quick stops, turn about the nose, all of it. The tech running the sim didn't believe I was not a pilot or hadn't flown before. There are more stories out there like my own.

Like a virtual pilot or simmer with a real background studies in aeronautics, for me, Dcs help me a lot to manage better my virtual flights and my aircraft in other simulators like Xplane or msfs2020. Good video. Rather not have MSFS-prefer DCS. But wish DCS or Mods had a few more instrument flight options. If Anubis could configure their C-130 for VORTAC, ADF and ILS, it'd be much more immersive. (Biased KC-130 guy). VOR/ILS/ADF in the OV-10. And maybe the mustang TF could be resto-modded. Doesn't DCS have some GPS/Receivers for some of their mods? Also though, used to do approaches in Primary with the T-28B, called penetration approaches from high altitudes. Speedbrake out, mixture rich, prop full, nose over to 250IAS from 15K. Don't see that much anymore. I understand USAF uses DCS for A-10 training and I believe other nations use it as well.

Which isn’t in MSFS at all. The only things that are the same are the position of the flap lever, throttle and mixture (yoke of course). That’s literally it.

Flying a cessna and a f15 are two entirely different things. This is like learning to drive while playing a formula 1 sim. MSFS would be a far better tool to learn how to fly a cessna than DCS.

I soloed in a C-172 when I was 17 years after 4 hours of instructor time, because I played the old MS Flight sims as a kjd religiously. I knew all the instruments and all the processes for landing/general flying and all it took was 4 hours of instructor time in a real C-172 to get to the point of soloing. I ended up getting my license in less than 1 year with exactly 40 hours on the dot. (40 hours is what is needed still I believe spread out over various types of flying with specific # of hours in each category) This was back in the mid-90's when flight sims looked like crap. I actually started playing the MS Flight sims in the 80's when they released version 1. So yeah, DCS is going to give you a lot of process/procedure and ability to multitask that will definitely carry over to the real thing that will shave a good amount of time off from your initial learning I assume. The real plane will be different and you will learn things they can't put in DCS but that's not a huge thing to get over.

4 hours to first solo ? You are lucky to be alive. I took 9 hours and had similar thoughts from old time, high hour pilots.

So what about Ace combat and wrarthunder? As both focus on the combat aspects much more then the typical DCS flyer would and have every thing you said one whould need... Also what about X-plane and industrial sims? Like are they not as good as DCS? Also what about the things DCS does poorly like cross country, trans alatic/Trans pacfic/landmark/chart navigation? Yes DCS you could argue is better for landmarks as everythinjg looks the same so it's harder but is setting up a new IRL pilot for a hard time if they can't follow ground landmarks just coasts and mountin ranges... Pretty much you shouldn'rt fan boy about one sim wghile hating on all the rest very beneath you.

Please take no offense and it is not personal by any means, but flying any jet war plane in any combat situation is kind of very easy and anyhow extremely slow paced compared to driving really hard with a good motorbike or a car with others or even ... on top of that the margin of error threshold is gargantuan compared to any other fast moving vehicle. While taking G's can be extremely tolling, the pace, ANY PACE is by no means close to eg riding a bike on a circuit where your top speed can be even just close to 200 knots. There is many 20 21 year old kids who have been in active Air combat already and any of what happens in DCS is not something that a 17 18 year old cannot handle in RL with a RL war plane. The only skill that matters and that not everyone can have or master to be a military jet pilot is to have a personality that is totally inclined to submit AND conform to its superior officers. Air warfare is very very slow paced even in a dogfight, so whatever megatasking is going on is not harder than any woman at the cashier of a supermarket while trying to pay the bill and holding her Iphone with the other hand and purse on her wrist and trying to pack stuff into plastic bags....trust Me put one of those in any airplane and they will megatask just as good as any jet pilot. Operating any airplane is very easy, the hard part is to have a seat on one.

No flying simulator will ever teach you how to fly for real , dude , get over it. ! You can only learn some aviation procedures with flying simulators ! I do fly MSFS in VR , but this will never make me a real pilot , so get tier ass out and go to a flying school if you wan to become a pilot. ! 😉

@@Spudknocker reason I ask is I like to play my guitar over backing tracks, and the one you've got in the video is kickass, so if possible drop me a link or name so I can grab it and jam on it.
