Kobe Bryant, Gilbert Arenas
SUPER-DUEL Full Highlights (Rare)
LA Lakers vs Washington Wizards
February 3, 2007
Verizon Center
KB - 39 pts, 6r, 6a, 2s / 14-26 fg, 2-5 3pt, 9-10 ft
GA - 37 pts, 5r, 4a, 1s / 9-29 fg, 3-15 3pt, 16-17 ft
Kobe and Gil duel in their Part 2 battle of the 2006-07 season. Part 1 on December 17th included the famous 60 from GA while Kobe got 45 as the Wizards defeated the Lakers in overtime. 60 still stands as the highest total scored against the Lakers at Staples. It’s 2nd to Shaq’s 61 for most scored by a Staples opponent (Clippers included).
Part 2 saw Kobe go for 39 on an efficient 14-26. Gil got 37, but shot it poorly at 9-29. Although LA pulled out the win, it didn’t take away from Arenas’ display of fearlessness when challenged by his superstar contemporary. On multiple possessions following a Kobe score, Gil found Bryant guarding him and immediately waved off his teammates, choosing to isolate. Arenas had an amazing NBA career, was a lethal scorer during his peak, but 2 of his most memorable plays came amidst a regular season game in February. This regular season game, vs Kobe. It includes the killer cross layup in the 1st half, and the cross 4-point play in the 2nd. Similar to Young Iverson’s cross on Jordan, Gil going at Prime Kobe, shaking him twice with a cross and scoring both times makes the tape for any Agent 0 career highlight mix.

TMac in 2002-04. They had some good games during other seasons, but by then they rarely guarded each other. D-Wade in 2008-2010. The Lakers didn’t really have anyone else, as Wade was too quick for DFish/Artest/Ariza/Vlad/Lamar

Sorry, one more thing: Kobe didn't guard Arenas much in this game, and Arenas was 9-29, only 4 assists and 3 TO's. Lotta bricks. During Arenas' 60 point game earlier, Kobe only guarded him in the OT (and Arenas scored 15 points!). But in neither game did Arenas guard Kobe (only on switches, which were rare). Before the injury, Arenas was a scoring (not just shooting) machine. He could score in so many different ways. He brags about his 2nd to 6th NBA seasons yes, but what he brags about is true. From 2002-03 to 2006-07, he was really HIBACHI 🔥🍳. 3:54 underrated b/c everyone laughs at Kobe’s blown dunk, but Kobe used to have the best chicken-wing swim moves, esp. during misdirections & FT box-outs. That too seems to be a lost art. Maybe b/c these days, the refs can easily call that an offensive foul.

Love your observations. Lot of opportunities for that swim backdoor in the triangle off those pinch post elbows. One of my favorite kobe games is the 46 at knicks in 2003. Hit sprewell with a lighting quick fake for the same exact opportunity, caught the lob for a dunk. Lethal misdirection.
@HD_YT

@@dcshow You must be referring to this play: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pMB0aKp8sdnOfn0.html In that clip it's unclear what/how much Kobe's doing to Spreewell with his arms. Spreewell could've & probably flinched from the misdirection alone, not from Kobe's chicken-wing swims & shoves. In contrast, here are 4 plays from a 5min span from LAL @ BOS, Finals 2008 G6 (#5 & #6 are just slo-mo replays of #4): #1. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b5qnqtuWqpjZj2Q.htmlm17s #2. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b5qnqtuWqpjZj2Q.htmlm56s #3. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b5qnqtuWqpjZj2Q.htmlm48s #4. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b5qnqtuWqpjZj2Q.htmlm36s #5. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b5qnqtuWqpjZj2Q.htmlm19s #6. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b5qnqtuWqpjZj2Q.htmlm25s If Kobe's right arm swings just a few inches lower when Kobe tries to bring it above the screener's head, Kobe would've completely decked/clotheslined Eddie House. Any ref from any era would've whistled that as a foul. In fact, in #4 #5 & #6 above, Doc Rivers actually gets T'ed up complaining about Kobe's swim moves. And yet Kobe does the same exact thing a few possessions later in #3. So Kobe's swim moves were such that not only did he "get away" with it 5 times in a row, he actually got the opponents' coach T'ed up complaining about it lol.

For 3 seasons (2005-07) Arenas had MONSTER years: 25.5, 29.3, 28.4 ppg. He was that one rare player on a poor team that was allowed to shoot as many times as he wanted to. However, is career fg% is bad (.406) and was only average 3 point shooter (33%). I don't like the comparisons to Kobe. Most importantly, he rarely guarded Kobe, whereas Kobe WANTED to guard Arenas (and did for a majority of plays). Arenas was more like Iverson (but only for 3 years), but Iverson averaged more assists. Arenas DEFINITELY stepped up to the challenge vs. Kobe, and wasn't afraid of him. For that, he gets props.

Being an avid Kobe/Laker fan, I appreciate this vid. I always thought Arenas was a loud mouthed-shoot first point guard, with MAD skills and elite quickness. And....he was! LOL.... but after looking at other Arenas vids and checking his stats,.... his stats during the 3 years with the Wizards (2004-07, before his major injury) actually compare to Kobe's stats in the same time. Arenas had 3-5 pts/game avg. fewer than Kobe, yes, but otherwise they were "almost" equal. Except Arenas was never known as a good/great defender, and he didn't do well keeping his teammates in the game, but then again, the Wiz had very few scorers on those teams (Antawn Jamison was solid 20 per). And Gilbert wasn't the killer and the winner like Kobe/MJ, but who was? So this vid changed my perception of Gilbert Arenas as a player. Thank you for posting this!

Gil was my favorite non-laker right next to Jermaine O'Neal. Hibachi!!! On a side note, how about that Vladimir Radmonovic call out right when the game started lmao.

What talented offensive minded players did Jordan had to face nightly like Kobe who scored and defended the best players. Pippen always defended the most talent offensive players during the Bulls Dynasty.
