I am an Army Veteran who was put out of the United States Military due to Alcohol rehab failure, while doing Battery wide room checks they found a bottle of alcohol in my freezer. This is the same leadership who kicked out a bunch of other soldiers for minor reasons and also Med-Boarded a good friend of mine who had just returned from a deployment with that unit as a Staff Sergeant... They Med-Boarded him because of sleep walking... He came forward and told that unit that his wife caught him sleep walking and they sent him to Fort Couch.... I felt like I failed my friends, my family, my leaders and subordinates, and my country... This made me extremely depressed and suicidal... I actually had a drinking problem that my unit was concerned about... It was battalion where the toxicity lied... CSM and LTC told all NCO's and Officers that every little thing that happens in all units hits their desks or they will demote people if they found out that it was handled at the lowest level possible... This caused a scare amongst the more senior NCO's and Officer's and eventually everything went to battalion and the decisions were made by them... The BC (Battery Commander) and the 1st Sergeant both thought that when my case hit battalion that I would get 45/45 with me keeping my rank (at worse)... Battalion command wanted people home... They allowed my BC to decide what type of discharge... My BC gave my Honorable because I was an amazing soldier and junior leader and because he never intended on me being chaptered out over a little booze... Honestly, later on I realized I did have an alcohol issue that I have gotten under control... I use to drink too much when I was younger to deal with things... Its what almost every unit I've ever been in preached! this video helped me so much that I began crying... From the bottom of my heart Thank you!

I served in the Navy. The anthrax vaccination was a mandatory vaccination all sailors were required to take. I took the vaccination, and it caused rashes on my body. They were so bad that I couldn't sleep. I left my berthing one night and had to walk around on the quarter deck because I was in so much pain. I was caught by a CPO, and was written up. I had watch the next night, was told to stay in the berthing and at dark thirty, I had to report to the quarter deck for watch. Some shipmates walked into the berthing and were talking loud. I told them to shut up. One of them walked over and dared me to say it again. I did, and it caused a fight. The next morning the Chief asked me what happened. I told her, but I still had to go to Captain's Mast. At Captain's Mast, I got 30 days restriction to the ship, barred from promotion for 6 months, and a 3 month stifling of payment. In other words I didn't get paid for 3 months! A seabag inspection came up a month later and I was expected to buy new overalls, and new dungarees. I had no way to buy them because I was not getting paid for 3 months. I told the Petty Officer I couldn't afford those items. She grabbed me by the arm and marched me to legal. I was told my discharge was good paper. It was a general under honorable conditions discharge with misconduct, and a reenlistment code of RE-4. I have no VA benefits and I can't get a job making decent money. That happened in 1999 and 2000.

Am I missing something? This SPN codes on DD-214 should be covered by the Privacy Act which is not made available to anyone without the permission of the separated service member or recruitment personnel. When I worked at the U.S. Census Bureau in Suitland, Maryland, an emplyee's Official Personnel Folder (OPF) had two sections in it. One section was a sanitized version which had official documents such as SF-50's and performance appraisals. The other section had Supervisor's remarks which could damage the employee's promotion potential. The latter section could not be viewed by the employee. Fast forward to the mid-1990's. I had a position in an Inspector General's office where I had access to privacy data and every six months I required to take training class as well as sign a document that I understood what constituted privacy data and acknowedge the harsh penalties for disclosing such data. It was then I learned at that time the practice of having a separate section of the OPF had become illegal (and the Census Bureau was abiding with the law). From what I understand about the Privacy Act regarding Federal Civil Service employees, it boggles my mind the SPN information is available to the public. If the original intent of posting SPN data on DD-214 involves reenlistment factors, the information should be available only to recruitment personnel on an need-to-know basis.

I was early retired (Army) by a retention board. I was given a character of service of Honorable and an the RE code is 3 on my DD214. On block # 28 stated Non-Retention on Active Duty. Block #26 stated LGH. When I applied for jobs, employers questioned as to why I was early retired. I could tell that I was suspected of being a shirker, a goldbrick.

Your discharge should not determine your civilian job outcome. The military is not recognized as a court of law. Oth discharge is wrong. Remember service is voluntary.
