Everyone looked so brave after the liberation. The same people, including the police collaborated with the Germans and looked away, or were even actively involved when people were deported. My father, after returning from a German POW camp found his job taken by the very man who had betrayed him. He never was restored in his right because the traitor knew many people in high places who also were the first to reclaim their power.

My father was a Canadian soldier serving with Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders in WWII. His company sergeant major had the company fall in and every 5th soldier got to spend the remained of the war living in a posh hotel guarding Dutch collaborators. The entire top two floors of the hotel housed the collaborators.

It's interesting that those in such a position to decide where collaborators would be housed under guard that they would choose to house those collaborators in a posh hotel. Could the reason possibly be that those who wanted to house the collaborators in near luxury knew even then that those collaborators would not be held accountable for their crimes against their fellow Dutch to include Jews?? Could it be that those who decided to put them up in comfort knew the same collaborators could very likely rule their lives again as government functionaries, or their boss at work..

@@ardshielcomplex8917 thats fine, your grandparents generation also falsely described the Poles as cowards after Montgomary miserably failed during Market Garden. Obviously I have nothing but respect for all the Brits that helped liberate the country, but again you are in no position to judge. Just as easily it can be said that you argue from your own national bias so that seems irrelevant as far as I'm concerned.

I for one don't see anyone publicly protesting this state of affairs. You use the term.. evil.. but I guess you would not consider the British Empire evil at all? Tom Swift No, he’s actually not. Controlling I am assuming means a ownership (including controlling majority shares) or an executive leadership role. Then as it is now, the heritage of those are quite broad. Anti Semitic propaganda used straight up falsified information to solidify support and compliance, focusing anger while distracting from the slow depletion of civil liberties and consolidation of control. It is a tactic that has been repeated throughout history against many, and today is usually used as bait to build support and create a source of capital inflow for far right groups. The angrier they can make their supporters, the better.

Translation of above: After the liberation of Amsterdam, collaborators are arrested by soldiers of the Domestic Forces. They are searched and removed. Meanwhile, there is a party on the Dam. The celebrating crowd sings and listens to speeches by, among others, Prime Minister Gerbrandy. The Wilhelmus (Dutch national anthem) is sung and a parade runs over Dam Square. The Vondelpark has been transformed into a military site where the Canadian soldiers camp.

I believe that all the police forces in occupied countries had to work with the occupying forces for crime and general policing duties, they had no choice. When the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey were occupied by German troops the police came under jurisdiction of the German military commander when carrying out civilian police duties. The police would continue to wear the British police uniforms throughout the occupation which ended in 1945.

These were the major racial groups. A Jewish gentlemen owned the local hardware store. He told us he was in the Polish Home Army during WWII. Confirmed by two other gentlemen in the neighborhood. At no time did I hear of any anti Jewish remark by any Polish person or anyone else. In fact the hardware store owner was a local hero. (Polish Home Army Service) Note I'm not Polish

During the allied advance into the Low Countries in the spring of 1945. The rations for the Netherlanders was reduced to nil as retribution for the withdrawal of labour, particularly of railways. The population had nothing to eat. People were eating grass. The allied air forces dropped food supplies instead of bombs. Look it up for, yourself. It is heartbreaking.

@@spring-jo8xv Most of the killers and brutal bastards at the extermination camps were German Police Officers in civilian life. Most escaped war crimes prosecution and execution after the war and simply returned to their respective police departments and lived out their lives. America fucked up when they caved to German pressure that going after these psychos was revenge motivated and the Americans wanted to avoid descent and civil disruption in post-war Germany. Hardly any fascist killers were actually brought to justice relative to the huge numbers of those who escaped it. Sad to think these assholes got away with so many murders of men, women and many children during the war.

My family has had Dutch and Danish family friends who experienced the WWII Occupation. To survive, one had to compromise some; be smart. If you openly defied the Germans you would be killed. But there were a wide range of what you could do to resist and maintain some independence. Such as a secret radio... Resistance newspapers were extremely popular in Denmark. A close family friend was in the Danish Resistance. A doctor he was in charge of Resistance newspapers underground distribution in the Horsens-Aarhus area. He also relayed Resistance Communications. The Gestapo arrested him in late 1944; he was imprisoned in Germany till war's end. Fellow Resisters smuggled in parts and built a radio. They listened to the BBC Danish Service.
