In this video, I understand better how to use De Esser than in your new video because you fucussed on one specific note from the vocals. It sounds SSSSSSSSSSSooo much better, thanks Dom.

Another very effective way: A linear phase de-esser - Copy your vocal track, flip the phase of the copy, high- and low pass it to the frequencies where you want your de-essing to happen (e.g . 5.5 khz - 11 khz) and send both tracks into a group. Automate the level of the copy until the "S" levels are ok for you. Due to phase cancelation you only effect the selected frequency range simply with the level of the track..

I'm definitely going to give this a try on the next song I mix. I'm currently working with someone whose recordings are sibilant to an extreme. The sibilant parts of the wav form are often the loudest parts. His performances are great though lol

How is it linear phase if you're using a regular high pass filter🙄
@xXValomatXx
@xXValomatXx Жыл бұрын
@@EdwinDekker71 works with zero latency EQs too. But for multichannel recordings (e.g. drums) linear phase is saver. Just enable the linear phase switch of your EQ and bam your high and lowpass filters become linear phase. :D It's that easy, if you are using an EQ with that function. With this method you can also remove e.g. harshness of your cymbals or using a compressor instead of an EQ you can easily remove channel bleed (snare, hihat, oh etc.). In this case you control the amount of the effect with the threshold and the release of the compressor. Ratio would be highest possible and attack the fastest possible so you don't mess with your transients. No make up gain in the plug in. Try it.

Hi Dom. I found this extremely useful. Especially showing how the waveform looks different for the non-musical sounds. I could not fix a 'CH' with cubase deesser without killing the sound, as it seemed to be over a wide frequency range. I also added 'Goto Left locator' to the macro as I found it did not work unless the playhead was inside the selected range. Many thanks for sharing this.

Hello Dom, thank you for another trick to make work in cubase easier. Let me add a tip for german users (or other languages). If you' re are not using an english version of cubase, it looks to be difficult to implement the macro, because the commands have diffent names. The solution I found for this is quite easy: switch the language in user program setting in cubase to english. You have to restart cubase and then you can enter all commands like suggested in this clip. You can switch to your original language afterwards.

I've always deessed vocals using 2 (or even 3) different DeEssers on the chain. it works pretty well for me, but this technique is pretty damn awesome and it will be super useful to tame vocal breaths too, since it´s something I always do manually just like you´re doing with the esses. Many thanks for this tip Dom!

Thanks Dom! I've just spent two days editing 37 vocal parts in a project, using Spectralayers (in stand alone mode) to de-breath and de-noise and I was about to de-ess in Cubase when I saw this! I have always used my own key commands, but only recently started using macros and this will be a great addition to my growing list! p.s. I'm with you @ 14:10 in that there's something enjoyable and satisfying about performing repetitive tasks like these. One has to concentrate though, as it's easy to switch off and make a mistake!

All good.... BUT to create the Makro better use the right side select all actions with a shortcut to find out in the list: Go to “type in key;“ and press the shortcut then press “select“ near the arrow -> and you have the action in the list left selected to add it to your Makro. That's much faster than typing those in in the search!

The problem with clip gaining 'esses' is that if you use compression, the levels of the 'esses' can just come back up again. A more effective technique is to use a 4 band EQ to highlight the offensive frequencies (usually around 5k - 5.5.k) then use this as a sidechain function to compressor (put at the end of the chain). It will automatically turn down those frequencies.

Dom, I have learned so much from your videos!! Thank you!! I have one problem with the De-Ess macro, I have triple checked it, so I assume there is a setting in Cubase I am missing. I am a new Cubase user and loving it!! When I use the macro, everything works, but the screen moves to where the transport currently is located so I then have to scroll back to where I was or make sure to click to move the transport where I am De-Essing so I don't have to scroll. You don't have to do that in your video and from reading the comments, no one else seems to be having this issue. Obviously I am missing something easy. Thank you for all your help!!

niccccce... i wonder if steinberg will implement in cubase 11 or later something like automatic sibilance and breath detector and control them similar to melodyne 5 ,it will save so much time de-essing on file/event level. might be a useful feature,say take a section of several background vocal tracks and lower the s by 6 db in one go to all tracks

In Photoshop for example, you can just RECORD some manipulations, they call this a "script" or "action", then save all the manipulations with a shortcut. It would be so great than Cubase could do this, less complicated to create an automation...

Thanks Dom, great video. If the sibilance type waveforms are easily identified (albeit with some experience), can Cubase not be developed to be able to 'locate' ALL sibilance wafeform segments (with choice to agree or otherwise) and either one at a time, reduce in volume (amount is selectable) or them all in one key stroke? I will get into this manually for time being as I noted that after listening to a new mix of a recent song I have finished, there are too many S's, T's etc that somehow seem to be extremely noticeable. Thanks again.

Is there a way to use the Pencil tool to draw it in like the way Pro Tools clip-gain can be drawn in? It's so fast, efficient, and most of all, gives far more control but without any extra friction? I've always been doing the method shown here when using Cubase (or similar in Logic minus the convenience of the macro). But Pro Tools clip gain drawing is still so much faster and more accurate -- if anyone knows how to make Cubase behave this way, I'd be super super grateful to know!
