The music stops as a spirit blazes down from the cross to approach Dante, who expresses his gratitude for the spirit's cordial greeting and hasks him to introduce himself: his name is Cacciaguida, Dante's great-great-grandfather. He explains that when he lived in Florence, this city was modest and honourable, so different to the present time. He was baptised there and went on to serve Emperor Conrad II on a crusade, where he died fighting in the name of Christian Faith...
