Not so, vocalist Ricky Ross wrote the song about a performance he saw of ex-Lone Justice singer Maria McKee during a time when Deacon Blue and Lone Justice toured together. The lyrics are a tribute to McKee, with the narrator using the term "real-gone kid" as a designation for craziness, referring to McKee's "wild" onstage performance style. 😎

That's interesting!! I don't assume all Scottish people are going to like all Scottish music, but I'm interested to know why this song never happened for you. I'm just some Australian that has only been to Scotland once, so my knowledge of Scotland is perhaps superficial. However, I've always had the impression that this was a ''Scottish'' sound, and in my mind I tie these guys in with Simple Minds, Texas, Del Amitri, Hipsway, The Blue Nile, Loydd Cole and a few others in that period. There's an accent, there's passion, there's a big production - you get what I mean? I don't know if you would like this, but some of The Proclaimers' better songs (not the ''I'm On My Way'' and ''500 Miles'') were also part of this 80's Scottish thing. Jesus And Mary Chain - not so much. So anyway, I was 21 when this song was a hit in Australia (1989) and I was like ''yeah, there's another Scottish band with that big sound''. So, why do you not dig it? lol

@@liveitup67 I do get what you mean, it's an interesting question. I think a lot of it is timing and influences, I'm the youngest of six kids, I grew up with a reasonably eclectic soundtrack ...Country, classical and folk that my parents listened to, space rock, punk and new wave from my brothers, chart and pop stuff from my sisters. I loved a ton of it, but none of it felt like my music, until I discovered house and techno, so I kind of became a techno snob for a minute, i loved the camaraderie and the unity of the early club culture days, it felt much like i imagined punk must have felt...so when this song was released in 1988, I was 19, I had found techno the year before, I thought I knew everything. For a while nothing else mattered, I dismissed a lot of stuff at the time that I later went back to, because it didn't fit into the gospel of clubbing. It was only a bit later, after a bit of life and growing up that I realised what a blinkered view that was, and worked my way backwards through a lot of things I had missed at the time. Though Deacon Blue I never quite got. I think some of that is because I don't see 80's Scottish music as a single scene. ...I see them as being part of the soul inspired stuff, Wet Wet Wet, Win, Hipsway etc. There was also a more punk and new wave inspired scene that ran at the same time, early Simple Minds, Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, The Blood Uncles, The Jesus And Mary Chain etc. I guess I'm biased toward that sort of thing from the way I grew up and I was involved for a while with several local bands as a roadie, doorman etc. They were all much more in the punk inspired camp.

The most punk I listened to was local punk-pop and punk-glam bands like Supernaut, Boys Next Door (aka Birthday Party), La Femme (Melbourne band), Teenage Radio Stars and James Freud And The Radio Stars. They were punk groups that Countdown kids could like... Supernaut and James Freud were the most success with Countdown kids. *Locomotive Latenight Live At The Corn Exchange, Cupar, Fife* Very indi! I appreciate it for its time. The more I listen, the more I'm digging it. First track reminds me of Joy Division (a band my brother liked in the late 70's). *I grew up with a reasonably eclectic soundtrack* I was the same in a way. My parents were 1950's teenagers, so they'd be into the old Rock 'n' Roll, as well as, The Beatles and folk music. My older brother got into prog-rock, art-rock and some glam. He was into Yes, Roxy Music, Can, T-Rex, Bowie.. All the classic names and some. He was also into local names. He also got into very early Simple Minds and Joy Division. He saw The Birthday Party live a few times after they kicked away their Boys Next Door identity. My older sister got into Glam, Suzi Quatro, Slade and Countdown bands (AC/DC, Skyhooks, Sherbet) and Top 40. I followed her and got deeply into 70's pop (ABBA, Bee Gees), Top 40 music and New Wave. My sister and I were music obsessives, so we knew almost everything that was going on because we had a lot of music video shows on TV in the 70's and we had mainstream radio and a strong Alternative and community radio presence in Melbourne. We were pretty mainstream, loved George Michael and Boy George and Madonna.. you know But I did get involved in the Dance scene in the late 80's as well. I was 20 in 1988 (we're pretty much the same age), and through training, I got to do work as a semi-professional dancer, so I was digging everything dancy from D-Mod to M.A.A.R.S to 808 State to new jack swing stuff.. But I do get what you're saying about 80's Scottish music not being a single scene. It certainly wasn't. I didn't think Texas and Simple Minds were from the same ''scene'' (lol), but there was this thing they shared with Big Country and Deacon Blue. I still took bands like that into my world even though they weren't strictly Dance acts. We had groups in Australia like Wa Wa Nee, Big Pig, Models, Machinations, I'm Talking, Rockmelons, who would play this big Dance-Pop and Rock crossover thing that really went down well at Dance parties and clubs. They were pop band that charted, they kinda had that Go-West thing going, and I really enjoyed their stuff when I was into dancing. That trend died, and Techno took over.

Same here. I wasn't really into that weak pop sound that invaded the already iffy charts of the time.
