We (Smegma)opened for them at this show. I put together a multi-camera system and grabbed 2 volunteers to assist me. I was on the stage camera and I was blown away . . . what a great show! ML

East Bay Ray had a wonderful mix of Dick Dale, Dave Davies and Albert King swirled into his infinitely recognizable special sauce riffs. He put the hook in with clever, powerful, whimsical chords that were melodic, elastic and anthem like. Puts me in the mood when I was seven watching Batman (full tilt joy, Batman, Spiderman and Speed Racer, had a towel around my neck for a cape, danced to the intro, Adam West days, you never knew who might pop up, the Riddler, Joker, Batgirl, It was so exciting and fun. That is what the Dead Kennedys were, fun. They were ironic, musical, loud, intelligent, talented and most of all, sincere. I saw Gibby, HR and David Yow in tiny clubs in Philly in the 80s and they all destroyed it back in the day but I never saw a DK show and this one here is just a great, great time capsule, brings back the memories, punk music masterclass, thank you for sharing.

Not sure what you mean by underrated? He’s one of THE most recognized vocalists from the entire punk movement. Anyone who knows anything at all about punk rock has heard of the Dead Kennedys and probably knows at least a few of their songs, and would be able to recognize his vocals. I think he’s made pretty successful impact. I agree he’s got a unique style, even by todays standards ✌🏻

yes the musicianship can't be denied, the DKs created a frenzied 2.0 asymmetrically version of Kinks songs; East Bay Ray was an updated Dick Dale and Jello is a punkier Morrison. The Dks were a mix of the Doors, Kinks with a dash of Albert King, a vibrant skitzy, ironic, powerful mix.

This is so great to see in such high quality. When I was still a punk-obsessed 13-year-old, a copy of this set (along with the accompanying "early" set from the same night) was one of the first bootlegs I ever listened to. It was sent to me by a guy from San Diego named Chris (who ran the BCT label back in the '80s), and who very generously sent me fifty-something shows in the mail so I could get my collection started and begin trading for real. Still one of the nicest and most selfless things anyone's ever done for me, btw, especially in an era of 2x-speed stand-alone CD burners! I remember that this particular set was one that really stood out to me for many reasons - the high audio fidelity, great setlist, raging performance, and of course the presence of "Night of the Living Rednecks" midway thru the second set! It wasn't til a few years later that I got my hands on the video copy, albeit in a much blurrier and higher gen version than what I'm watching today. Thank you guys so much for taking the initiative to tape the show and get the resulting recordings out there into trade circulation.
