Wow. When I moved to Columbus in the early 70s, this mall was jumpin’. My young husband and I were especially fond of the Lazarus restaurant that was upstairs, overlooking the mall. They had amazing food for a reasonable price. Wonderful warm apple pie with cinnamon ice cream. Lazarus is gone, my husband died. “Oh, the times they are a-changin’’. (Bob Dylan.)

Thanks for the video. I grew up with Eastland and I worked at two stores there (Spencer Gifts and JB Robinson Jewelers) in high school and college in the late 70's to mid-80's. It certainly is a shadow of its former self.

@@UniCommProductions I thought I saw their sign in the video! It's pretty wild to think they would be one of the only original tenants. (THE only?) When I worked there starting in 1979, men had to wear dress shirts and a tie (mandatory), and women in dresses. Anyone over Assistant Manager had to be referred to as "Mr." or "Mrs./Ms." respectively. It's quite a bit different now to say the least. I've taken my kids to the Tuttle and Polaris stores and they can't believe their middle-aged dad actually worked there. When I moved to JB Robinson Jewelers, it was a great job for my college years and I learned a lot. One thing that most people don't know about Eastland is the water feature that used to be in the center of the mall, right outside where JB Robinson and JC Penney were located. It had hundreds of strands from the floor to the ceiling that water trickled down with a fountain inside it. It's a fading memory, but it was really cool and something everyone would stop to watch. It was removed by the 80's, I believe, for reasons I never heard, but it was a very distinguishing feature of the mall. I have lots of memories and stories from my time growing up on the east side and visiting the mall hundreds of times.

Fountains are extremely expensive to operate and maintain especially as they begin to age, and insurance companies aren’t fond of them because of the potential for some sort of accident. It’s a shame, really-throwing coins in the fountain was kind of a quintessential childhood mall activity

I went to that restaurant many times as a child. It was cafe-style similar to MCL. The food was good but I was always excited to go, because the carrot cake squares were excellent and I have never found a suitable replacement. I made the suggestion of turning the anchor store spaces into apartments while the rest would be shops, keep the food court, and an indoor walking area. I guess the current owners are not into that.
@UniCommProductions
@UniCommProductions 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure it's that--3 of the 4 the anchors were built in the 60's, which means that undertaking a big restoration/remodeling project will potentially involve asbestos and mold remediation, and they would have to make cuts into the sides to create windows where they currently are none (the building codes for residences are a lot different than for commercial because they need to have more fire exits/ventilation because people spend more time there than a few hours at a store). I think the area would really benefit from something like you're suggesting, it's going to be a matter of whether the owners can pull that off in a way that makes it more cost-effective than demolishing it.
@jeffbarnes54
@jeffbarnes54 4 жыл бұрын
They should just tear down the empty anchors and build midrize apartments that have a lobby entrance to the mall as well as outside entrance. If you built 3 or 4 apartment midrises with 200 apartments in each you would have 600 to 800 apartments. This mall seems really sketchy.....

@@UniCommProductions China Coast was owned by the same corporation that owned Olive Garden and Red Lobster at that time. There was a corporate decision to no longer pursue an Asian themed nameplate. All China Coast locations closed at approximately the same time. The location at Eastland just happened to open shortly before the corporate shutdown. Due to the architectural style of the buildings I believe nearly all were torn down rather than being repurposed.

The original Lazarus store also turned into an alternative school for children for a while, but they did not make it because of the bomb threats and shootings that we're going on in the mall. So that Lazarus location did not sit empty that entire time, and was occupied for a year or two. The JCPenney store ended up closing because they were not able to keep up with the financial situations that was at hand, along with keeping the store and proper condition for everyday use because the the roofs were leaking every time it rained from the fourth floor to the first floor and they weren't able to repair it properly, let alone the escalators were always breaking down. On top of the decline of people that came in to keep the store in business, they just were not able to afford a four-floor location at a mall that was rapidly declining and going to eventually be closed down, which is the way it's still looking. Since then, Sears has closed and many other stores have left the mall and as you see it is rapidly becoming another Westland Mall. I worked at that JCPenney location for about eight years before I moved away from Columbus and that's how I know so much.

@@UniCommProductions You mentioned city centre mall somewhat affecting the traffic on this mall, among other things that's true. I wish when the anchors started to leave city centre they could have converted each failed one into casinos and kept the common area retailers alive with possibly a surviving Macy's. 2-3 Hollywood sized casinos smack dab downtown , boy I miss the Christmas time entertainment at that mall center court.

@@markbajek2541 I think that would have helped. The 90s were a rough time for downtown malls--people really didn't like the idea of paying to park for such a similar shopping experience. People seem more ok with the idea now because they've started going to downtowns more in general (I'm from Cincinnati and our downtown mall failed in the early 2000s, and a decade later our downtown is booming.)

Gangs were moving in and it was getting to be unsafe to go there by the time I left. If the Security had been given more authority, and been allowed to carry firearms it would have helped because people were afraid to shop there and Security was helpless to protect them. The thing that really killed the malls was the internet though. Very sad.

Lazarus eventually owned Macy's: Lazarus (Columbus) was one of the four founding members of Federated Department Stores (along with Williams Filene's Sons Co. and Abraham & Straus and Bloomingdale Brothers). Federated purchased Horne's (Pittsburgh) in 1994 (except for the 3 Northeast Ohio stores, which were sold to Dillard's) and merged it into Lazarus. Federated Department Stores also purchased Macy's in 1994, and then purchased The May Company in 2005 (which was a massive retail merger with 800+ department stores across the US). At different points in it's history, the May Company was comprised of the following regional brands that maintained their own regional buying, advertising, visual display, and credit card operations: May Company Ohio (Cleveland); May Company California (LA); Famous-Barr (St. Louis); O'Neil's (Akron, OH); Kaufmann's (Pittsburgh); Strouss (Youngstown, OH); Sibley's (Rochester, NY). FYI: May Company Ohio, Strouss, O'Neill's, and Sibley's were all merged into Kaufmann's between 1986-1990 (and Kaufmann's expanded south from Cleveland-Akron and west from Pittsburgh into Columbus). May-Daniels & Fisher (Denver); G. Fox (Hartford); Meier & Frank (Portland, OR); Lord & Taylor (NYC). The May Company purchased Foley's (Houston), Filene's (Boston), from Federated Department Stores in 1988 when FDS was in bankruptcy. FYI: The back-office operations of Kaufmann's was merged in Filene's in the very late 1990s. May Company California and JW Robinsons merged to form Robinsons-May. Other May Company stores included Wanamaker's (Philadelphia); Strawbridge's (Philadelphia); The Jones Store (Kansas City, Missouri); Zions Cooperative Mercantile Institution (Salt Lake City); and Marshall Field's (Chicago). In the early-2000s, Federated had already started changing their regional nameplate to Lazarus-Macy's, Rich's-Macy's, etc. On February 28, 2005, Federated Department Stores announced that they would acquire the May Company for $11 billion. By September 2006, all of the May regional nameplates, except for the Lord & Taylor chain, ceased to exist as Federated consolidated its operations under the Macy's mastheads including some of May Company's most famous names: Marshall Field's, Filene's, Hecht's, Foley's, Kaufmann's, and Famous-Barr, as well as the last nameplate to still have the May name (Robinsons-May). All locations that were not sold off were rebranded as Macy's. FDS (Macy's) sold off Lord and Taylor. Eventually Federated Department Stores changed it's to Macy's, Inc. and is traded under the letter M on the NYSE.

@@UniCommProductions So agreed about security in malls! At some places I've been to I didn't have a problem with security(i.e. Century III, Jamestown Mall in Florissant, MO near Saint Louis), while at others I narrowly prevailed while being careful to watch for security(Lincoln Mall in Matteson, that one I almost got caught taking pics). While at 2 malls, oddly enough I only got kicked out on my last ever visit to those malls taking pics(Evergreen Plaza and Charlestowne Mall, but not at both malls after taking enough pics), but on my past visits had no probs at those 2 malls. There was a certain guard at Charlestowne, who especially was a jerk to me despite that I was minding my own business. Sigh.... Yep, you really never know how security will be like, at each mall you visit! And, even on that particular day if the people working will be jerks, or not. The mall just shut down. A shame, but not very surprising. It’s actually more surprising it stayed open until now. The last anchors left over five years ago, something that kills other malls almost immediately. It’s close to Easton, Columbus’ most popular retail destination, whereas Westland and Northland didn’t last very long after Tuttle and Polaris opened; in the case of Northland it shut down almost the same moment Polaris opened. I guess Easton didn’t siphon Eastland’s anchors like what happened with the other directional malls, though. Even most Columbus residents thought the mall was shut down already, and looks that way when driving by it. I kind of wanted them to keep on going, because of its place in Columbus’ history and because it was home to a lot of local businesses. However, I’m sure those small businesses can find greener pastures elsewhere. I’m sure anywhere would have better real estate than a mall a lot of residents didn’t even knew still existed.

I went back there last May when I was in the area to film a couple other things, and it looked closed then! The only entrance that was open is on the back of the mall and it looked abandoned from the street…and this was a Saturday! It still seemed fairly clean inside but the outside…goodness. It easily looks as bad as Forest Fair does. Overgrown brush, dirty buildings, boarded up windows…it truly doesn’t surprise me to hear this news, as disappointing as it is. Hopefully they can do something useful with that plot of land. The people in the neighborhood need it.

@@UniCommProductions yeah… the Mall almost looks like it’s outta Mad Max, lol. The Lazarus building looks especially bad, which makes sense since it’s been unoccupied the longest. I’m interested to see what they do with the place, too. Perhaps it will go the Northland route and become a strip mall, or at worst it could end up like the mostly abandoned and difficult to redevelop Westland. Perhaps it will become something completely different. Some land nearby was reconverted to a park, maybe they will annex the land.

I would love to see it become a park…I’ve been to this mall a few times and honestly I really like the fact it’s mostly independent businesses. Ohio seems to have a lot of dead malls. Why is this?
@UniCommProductions
@UniCommProductions 5 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of reasons there seem to be so many-a lot of the bigger cities and towns in Ohio have been affected by factory closures (the auto industry for instance) and as a result the demographics changes for the area and the residents can no longer afford to shop there. Ohio is considered a very good “test market” for the US as a whole because it has a mix of demographics that reflect the rest of the country’s, so there is some experimentation with what may work elsewhere. Also, it seems like Pennsylvania and Ohio really overbuilt malls-two huge developers (Richard Jacobs and Edward DeBartolo) were based in the region.

In the US it's a combination of things--they really overbuilt them in a lot of parts of the country where the land was cheap (my next project after this international grocery store series I'm working on is going to be a case study using Cincinnati--we had 17 malls in 1990. That's at least 2x too many for a city this size, and there were a lot of cities with this problem). The internet is a factor, and also the renewed interest in the old city centers that malls cleared out in the 60s and 70s means that the neighborhoods that surround these malls have changed drastically since they were built.

Judge declares Eastland Mall a public nuisance, allowing for demolition if not cleaned up by Lisa Rantala Monday, June 13th 2022 COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) - A once iconic mall on the east side of Columbus, Eastland Mall has now been declared a "public nuisance" by the Franklin County Environmental Court. "This court does find the subject property in this case Eastland Mall to be in violation of Columbus City Code and a public nuisance," said Environmental Court Judge Stephanie Mingo during an injunction hearing Monday. City Code Enforcement started issuing violations to the owners of Eastland Mall back in 2019 for issues of not maintaining the parking lot, broken and missing mortar and zoning noncompliance. Code enforcement officers took the stand during the hearing to testify many of the same issues existed last week when they last inspected the property. Neighbors also testified to call the massive 70-acre property an embarrassment to their community. "On the inside, there's a stench in the air," testified Felicia Saunders. "I don't know what that smell is but it's a very bad stench." The property manager for Eastland Mall Holdings LLC, Nihal Weerasinghe, took the stand and admitted to having up to 1,200 potholes in his parking lot. He said many have been fixed but neighbors also contribute to the problem by cutting through his lot instead of using the highway. While removing illegally dumped furniture from the lot and completing a massive power upgrade, management said $258,000 have been spent so far on repairs. However, current tenants not paying rent for months has contributed to a cash crunch which has prevented more from being done. "This court finds that pace of the work to be absolutely unacceptable," said Mingo before giving her injunction ruling. She said owners must bring Eastland Mall to compliance within the next 60 days, pick up litter every day and cut weeds and grass at least every two weeks. If her orders are not met, she will allow the city to abate the property at the owner's expense. She said she would allow for any possible demolition if part of the city's abatement plan. The case goes back to court on September 22nd.

I was back there a few weeks ago when I was in Ohio to film Tri County closing-it’s bad these days. It looks abandoned from the street and the parking lot is like the surface of the moon.
