I used to go to that mall a lot with my mom when I was young (1980s). My favorite place to go was Aladdin's Castle, which was an arcade (I had Pac-Man fever). There used to be a water fountain in front of JC Penney. Before there was Younker's, there was Prange's. Before there was Kohl's, there was Montgomery Ward. Before there was Sears, there was Prange Way. They also had Musicland, Sam Goody and FYE. Outside, there was an auto repair shop, Firestone. Before there was Firestone, there was JC Penney Auto Center. Good times!

Great summary of the mall history Scott - they should be included in the video. I found this video trying to research any thing on FDL Aladdin's Castle, but I think it was just too old and no one documented pics/videos of it.

God I forgot about the aladens castle. I use to love that place. There was a grumpy old man that would change money. He should have retired years ago as he was not a very good people person. They also had a nice place on main street up stairs in the 1980s and it had great video games as well. Days of good pinball games are long gone and it's sad. Thank you for a memory long forgotten!

As of 2021, this mall has mostly been torn down with some of the stores remaining as stand-alone. The city wisely saw this as an opportunity to make a good first impression with a new development.

My hometown stomping grounds when I was a kid/teen in the 1980s and 1990s. Thanks for getting this one preserved on video. It was such a hopping place up through the mid 2000s. It's dying a slow painful death. They're probably going to do much with this like they're doing to Memorial Mall (Sheboygan)....pull it down and put up a Meijer or something (which I honestly wouldn't mind.....give Wally World nearby a bit of competition). It would be sad in a way, but a sign of the times. The Kohl's still does well, but it seems Bon-Ton (they own Younkers and Boston Store here in Wisconsin) has decided to use our Younkers as a dumping grounds for unsold stuff. Uh-oh..... As for when the flooring was put in. The look you saw and filmed here was completed in the late Summer of 1998.

It's too bad they charged too much for renting store space. They had to sell a lot of product just to pay for the outrageous rent. It's like a chain reaction. One store leaves, then another and another. They needed a nice food court to make people want to shop. Look at the Appleton mall. They have so many different types of food and that mall is flourishing. Nice video of a thing of the past that couldn't adapt to a rapidly changing market.

This mall is even more dead. It’s a shame, even in the early 2010s it still had some stuff, but now, it’s a wasteland with only a few good stores, I have to go to Appleton if I want to go to the mall instead of going to the local one, I still remember that movie theater too, but unfortunately it’s gone, just like the whole mall.

It was sad to see this Mall go! Some friends and I would come to this Mall often a few years ago, up until it closed, and just bum around the place, and play in the Arcade. Something about it's aesthetic and "stuck-in-time" feel and look just drew us in many times over. We never got to experience this Mall at it's peak, which is kinda sad to me personally. But I'm glad we got experience it before it's demolition! But if you back to it today, you can still see some remnants of the Mall, which does put a smile on face! But I will always reminisce on the times me and my buddies would just go there to walk around and play House of the Dead in the arcade, sometimes baked out of our minds 😂

Thanks for the video! I worked here in the 1990's and I can say one huge problem with Forest Mall is the people of Fond du Lac-they are not loyal, only follow their wallets. It is a very blue collar community and when Wal-Mart opened across 41-it slammed us hard in the mall. I had worked in retail management all over the Midwest and never saw such rude and cheap and cheap customers as I did in that town. When I worked there the JC Penney and Prange Way were still in the mall, but alot of local vendors already had space-I see this mall quickly going down like Memorial Mall in Sheboygan or the mall in Manitowoc.

Hey dickhead I'd really appreciate it if you didn't label us as not loyal. I live and grew up here and I remember when the mall was the shit. It's so sad that it's dying but the fact is that none of us want it to. The reason people shop online now which is apparently "not loyal" is because stores left when they still had money to continue being a part of the mall. Bless all the stores there who stood strong and are still pulling through all of this awaiting for the mall to get revamped. We are loyal, your comment was unnecessary.

Scottsdale Fashion Square has split level floors because of how it was built up in different decades (including the coming luxury expansion). The original part from 1961 gained a 2nd floor and splits into 3 where the food court is located. It has short escalators.1st floor above food court sees a slight upward shift to match up with the same level in this part of the mall made from an old Diamond's/Dillard's. The 2nd level sees another slight rise going west. The 3nd floor has to rise slightly to match the 2nd level of Macy's. The floors stay level in this west section as it crosses over a below grade Goldwater Blvd and matches up perfectly with the massive Dillard's made from an old Bullock's AND another mall called Camelview Plaza. The mall has to elevate the 2nd level more though to line up with the 2nd level of Neiman Marcus. The first floor of the 1961 section at the eas end has steps and a ramp because the part of te mall at this end sits where Robinson's May used to stand since the 1st floor was a little lower. And the if you bo back to the food court, the food court level has stairs and an elevator for the Kona Grill entrance and the two mall levels have to climb quite a bit and continue to see a couple other rises further south because the mall has to cross above Camelback Rd and line up with the 2nd and 3rd floors of Nordstrom. It's a good walking mall since it's huge and has a bunch of level shifts.

Urbex- A Peak Inside Largest in AZ and the region. It has some of the mall staples like GameStop and Victoria's Secret, but then it has more luxurious brands like Williams Sonoma, Tiffany & Co, and Giorgio Armani. The redevelopment coming next year will see a remodel of the wing anchored by Neiman Marcus and Dillard's and the addition of The Luxury Collection, which will have new luxury tenants and space for little art festivals and things. It will have valet, concierge, and a retractable roof, which I've seen open in the regular mall before. The mall needs expansion as it's expected more visitors will be coming. It's funny how the shopping mecca began in 1961 as a single story, outdoor mall from where the 2008 addition begins all the way to the part where the floors split into 3 floors. Aeruals show the evolution of the little outdoor mall and its competition Camelview Plaza (devoured by the nation's largest Dillard's). I have some lazy mall videos including Fashion Square as well as posts on my Instagram account @koubupilot

Urbex- A Peak Inside Area around Scottsdale Fashion Square is nice. They take care of their neighborhoods. There's a mix of 60s-80s and then there's brand new condos. Neighboring Parafise Valley is also very nice. Paradise Valley Mall is actually in Phoenix, but has some cool vintage design such as the pillars in the courts and the old Diamond's facade on Sears. JC Penney there is sort of two toned and has some vintade 70s exterior lamps.

Sure seems like this mall last got some sort of renovation in the 1990s, and that it never got a single renovation since then. Other than those lights on the ceiling, and a few minor seating area renovations. That said, at least it looks like it's doing a tad better, than some of the other smaller Wisconsin malls that aren't regional draws that you've visited(i.e. Memorial Mall in Sheboygan, Regency Mall in Racine, and I'm not sure if I'd say if this is better or worse vs. Janesville Mall). Staples anchoring this mall is a little surprise to me, since I've NEVER seen Staples anchor any other malls anywhere myself. If you want to visit more malls and shopping centers to the south in IL, for successful malls I'd do Cherryvale in Rockford, Woodfield in Schaumburg(most successful mall in IL, though I'm disappointed Simon took away some of its classic look in a recent renovation), Orland Square in Orland Park, Oak Brook Center in Oak Brook, and Water Tower Place in Chicago. For deader ones or malls that are starting to die, I'd visit River Oaks Center in Calumet City(this mall was built as an outdoor shopping center in a design similar to Old Orchard and Oak Brook in the 60s, was enclosed in the 1990s, but has struggled in recent years), Stratford Square in Bloomingdale, Spring Hill in West Dundee(AND this'd be a closer drive for you than some of the other suggestions), to name examples. Although Stratford isn't much further of a drive south and east, in my opinion. If you want to explore some other dead/dying malls further east, you also could hit The Village Mall in Gary, IN(and don't worry, the area around it isn't as bad as other parts of Gary), and The Orchards Mall in Benton Harbor, MI. Keep up your series of vids, on malls and shopping centers!

+BoratWanksta thanks man. You are one of my biggest fans and I'm thankful for that. Those are great ideas and don't worry more videos will come. I plan on going to Chicago tomorrow to knock out 10 or 20 malls all in one shot. I know it sounds a lot but I want to do it so I don't have to go down there for a while. I'll just download them throughout the year.

You're welcome. I'm sure you'll have some good videos, wherever you decide to hit. I'd try to hit River Oaks in Calumet City if you could, since I continue to be amazed that Penney's and Macy's haven't pulled out of that mall. That mall used to be in much better shape back in it's pre-enclosed outdoor shopping center days(when it was strong like Oak Brook and Old Orchard), and in the early years of when it was enclosed. If you go to The Village Mall in Gary, IN, you can tell it's heritage as that it started as an outdoor shopping center with Montgomery Ward, among other anchors I'm forgetting. Anyway, have a good trip, and I know you'll get good vids with wherever you go.

BoratWanksta I have experience of Spring Hill being horrible with security. security is crazy there since they are so bored also, check out meadowdale near spring hill in carpentersville. it used to be a top shopping district with a hybrid design. the inside is still there and barely alive with a church food pantry and doctors offices

I’ve heard rumors of them wanting to turn part of the mall into a Meijer but tbh... that would mean Walmart would close down. Honestly Fondy is kinda dead now tho... I’ve lived here all my entire 19 years of life and I remember the mall used to be super packed! As I grew up I eventually stopped going there because online shopping became a thing! I also remember that Wet Seal was one of the first stores to close and ever since then I barely even set foot there.
