Dead Mall: Richmond Mall - Richmond, KY. Enjoy a look at this little mall that survives solely by Mom & Pop stores. Bargain Hunt is the only big chain store at the mall with an outside access only. Inside the mall, several little unique stores and a church keep this once booming mall afloat. Richmond Mall opened in 1988 and faced several sales over the years. It's peak was the late 90s and early 2000s. When the mall was nearly completely full of tenants, a new shopping center was opened nearby in 2008 called Richmond Centre. With its opening, many tenants left this mall for the new shopping center including all 3 anchors. Within 2 years the occupancy dropped to 50%. Today, it's down to 30% but still hangs on and is in relatively great shape given the circumstances.

I remember Richmond Mall being full of stores and people back in the early 2000s. Now it's a sad relic of the past, plus the new shopping center they built over by the interstate put the final nail in its coffin. Thanks for reviewing this place, and giving a nod to Loretta Lynn, she was a great person 👏🙂

As a late 90's kid who mainly grew up in the 2000s, i have so many memories and experiences of this mall and i miss it so badly. Funny enough, my older brother as a highschooler used to work in the cinemark. We even still have his old uniform! The radio shack, foot locker, man there were so many great stores that made richmond feel alive. My mom's favorite part of the mall was the food court because she loved the opals restauraunt that used to be open there. This mall also always had the best christmas decorations during the holiday season. Man what i would give to get one day to relive what it was like! Thanks for the vid Wallie.

I grew up with this mall. It had all the makings of a solid mall for a young kid: arcade, movie theater, food court, toy store, book store, sporting goods store, and a fountain. It was in the NES days. I remember playing NES at kiosks both in JC Pennys and Walmart. A few Halloweens I went there to trick or treat. First date. Good times.

Wallie, I have been waiting for this video. Richmond Mall was my mall when I was going to college there in the early 90s. This mall in my personal opinion was never that popular, especially with the college crowd I'm sure the builders were hoping to attract. Everyone I knew instead went to Fayette Mall in Lexington because it carried the designer brands the college crowd wanted. My best friend and I would go to Richmond Mall and get Chinese food from the food court, and I loved shopping at the Goody's.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! I'm sorry it took me so long to put it together. So many other videos took priority over the summer. Haha it's strange about this mall. Google and Google maps doesn't even recognize this mall in its system. Anytime I type in Richmond Mall it gives me the location for Richmond Centre. Only search results recognize this mall. I'm just glad I drove by it and knew about it so I could check it out and do this video.

I consider Richmond my home after moving here over 20 years ago. I remember going to the mall when it still had most of its tenants, with the movie theater and the food court. It was nice and relaxed. I still go over there to go to El Mejor or the BGCAPP offices. It would be nice to revitalize it somehow. The new mall isn't doing that great with many of the tenants leaving. I think the rents are just too high for little ol' Richmond. We had a small business down the road from the mall and the rent was extremely high for what we got. We hung on for years, but finally had to sell. The property owners should re-evaluate their rental costs. The planter that you showed at the end of the video use to be a dancing water display where streams of water would blast out of an opening and stream into another opening and was fun to watch.

The song you played at the beginning of the video always has a special place in my life. Many of us here have coal miner dad's in Kentucky. I live West of there in Webster county in providence. A Mall in Hopkins county has changed a lot since It first opened. I didn't recognize the same place. It's not completely dead it tries to strive. There are some stores you might enjoy there. I know of a restaurant there that serves the best hamburger in the style of the fifties. There used to be an arcade where dollar tree is today.

The death of Turfland Mall, on Harrodsburg Road, in Lexington, KY hit me the hardest. That was my coming of age hangout. That farm is literally right behind the mall! When I was doing exterior shots I heard a cow moo and I looked up the parking lot where there is a gate at the end of a gravel driveway and tree line and I could see a handful of cows. I figured why not add that into the video?! I had planned on using an old country song to start the video since we were in Kentucky. I had begun editing the video right around Loretta's passing. So it was no question what song I was going to put into the video. Basically like a tribute.

Ah, so you visited this location when you were down at Buc-ee's and recorded at the abandoned McDonald's and BP at the Winchester-Boonesboro exit. I had recommended this location in the comment section of one of your earlier Richmond, KY, area videos. I guess you were way ahead of me! Thanks for this, Wallie! 👍 Glad to hear you mention Dawahares and Office Max. Dawahares went bankrupt the same year that Richmond Centre opened. The Office Max was where the Bargain Hunt is now, I believe, since the space next to it was Hastings. There is an Office Depot across the highway now; maybe after Office Max and Office Depot merged, they moved from the mall? I liked hearing your history of the mall. I wouldn't have been able to say when Walmart moved out other than it was before 1998 since the Supercenter was open by then. As long as I can remember, the interior mall entrance to the old Walmart part was walled off; probably even when Walmart was in the mall, shoppers had to go outside to access Hastings and Office Max (unless they came in after Walmart and took part of that area). There also was a Dollar Tree in the mall, next to J.C. Penney; it is now across the highway in the plaza where Dunham's and Hobby Lobby are (side note: that Hobby Lobby is located in part of an old K-mart, with the Office Depot in another portion of it). The rehabilitation (thrift store) area is where the food court and movie theater were. The food court had a Chinese food place that was amazing! Other eateries came and went, but I believe there were Gold Star Chili, Arby's, and Subway as consistent tenants.

I used to frequently go to lunch here with my elders after church. I remember the sounds of all the toys in the toy shop as you walked by, and the smell of sugar cookies in the cafeteria. The Jolly Time Arcade was amazing. It was only after 2010 or so that the traffic through here really started to nosedive. Before it was a place where you could spend time enjoyable browsing and exploring storefronts. Now the stores there are very niche and you probably don't want to go unless you have a reason.
