Fun fact. When I was 12 I saw a video of Dead Rising on the TV show The Electric Playground. I was blown away. When I was 13 I saw the game being displayed at a local rental store. I had to ask my dad If I could rent it. (The game and the console. Since we didn't have the money to buy an xbox 360.) He said no. It was too violent. When I was 14 I had the money and was allowed to rent it. But when I arrived to the rental store. The clerk told me the game had received Sun damage by a renter leaving it on top of his console in the sun.... When I was 15 I got my first job. I still didn't have enough money to buy an xbox 360. So I bought the game. I had to rent an xbox 360 every time I wanted to play it. I loved the game so much I rented an xbox for an entire month.

Peak RE and Peak DR are polar opposites in tone despite having the same ratio of comedy and drama. RE1-3 were silly apocalypses, taken completely seriously by their main characters. Zombie sharks, a big gray man in a trenchcoat and trilby, giant mutant plants and bugs, all played straight, because the main characters took them seriously. Meanwhile Dead Rising is a very serious apocalypse. Everyone's dead, people have gone feral in response to seeing all the trauma, its horrible. But Frank doesn't give a solitary shit. Its a comedyhorror game because of the perspective Frank brings to it, despite the horror being more grounded than it is in RE.

@DARE045110 ай бұрын
@@jayh5840 Frank encouraged chaotic behavior, though. When you crossdress as, say, Chuck in DR2, he complains. When you do it as Frank, he checks himself out and enjoys it. Frank takes the time to take pictures. Sure, you can argue its "up to the player" but you can tell what a protagonist values through what the gameplay rewards. And Frank's gameplay rewards taking pictures of people suffering before you help them, and taking pictures of zombies with pies in their face. And he repeatedly made it clear his primary motivation (for the opening third of the game, anyway, before shit got Really Dramatic) was The Scoop. And even once he accepted he had to do something ethically, the scoop was still really up there in terms of his motivations.

@@DARE0451 yeah, he takes pictures intended to shock people and draw them in for the media. It also just has better characters. Psychos feel like people who just lost it in 1. Cliff incapsulates this perfectly. He’s not supposed to be entertaining he’s supposed to be sad. Every other game makes them cartoons for the sake of “wow zany wahoo adventure time am I right? You kids loved how silly these characters were right?”. I will give the second game credit for its analogies involving desensitization and corrupt big pharma exploiting people who need a medicine to survive for profits though. These things have aged depressingly well.
@PyramidHead3164 жыл бұрын
@@Neogears1312 As much as it sucked that "Dead Rising 4" took out the psychopaths, I think the one that best illustrates the problems with the psychos in 2 is the one in the chapel, trying to marry that woman. There's nothing sympathetic about him, and no indication that he was ever normal. He was always a creeper, from the very beginning. And the snipers, too. I've seen people like that in real life, unfortunately, but that doesn't mean I want to see them in video games! There's a difference between a person who snapped, and people who are just itching for an excuse to hunt people, and the zombie outbreak gives them the perfect scenario. I guess it's supposed to make them satisfying to kill, but meh.

PyramidHead316 to be fair that one is made to mock a real human being. You’re not supposed to sympathize with him. Slappy really sells this to me though, as he’s just Adam but then they decide “nah remember Stevens death that was funny. Slappy is comedic relief now” in 1 the convicts stayed the silly ones, jo was always the despicable one, Adam was the creepy one with tragic undertones, cliff was a broken man the snipers were an allegory for the problems with gun nuts etc. they didn’t just flip the script midway through so jo is actually a silly character.

I still love Dead Rising 1 even if I haven't played it in ages. I cared so much about playing it and seeing all it had that there's only two achievements I never got back on my original copy, the five and seven day survivor ones. It's one of those games that wouldn't get made today, and I mean in the "if someone took the concept and tried today, it'd be executed differently" sense. The timer especially wouldn't have made it through as it did, the first and second games were made into what they were by just how impactful the timer was, much like how the timer added pretty much nothing to the third game with how much leeway it gives. Love that you closed the video out with Justified, by the way. Also, how I beat Adam at low levels? Pick up a bunch of pistols and keep your distance. Shoot the balloons he blows and then him when he's stunned. Makes the fight a breeze. TJ Rotolo is also the only Frank West, there is no competition.

Whenever I saw gameplay of this game it filled me with this sense of curiosity that always intrigued me on how what it would feel like playing this game since it felt (sorry if this sounds cheesy) like something I've never seen before. I was really young when it came out in the good old days of 2006. As well as discovering the franchise a year ago and not having enough money to buy it. So, I'm happy to say that I'm getting it soon. So, I might finally be able to have a hands on experience with Dead Rising. By the way, when I discovered both Dead Rising and your channel I've wondered how a video of yours on the game would be like. Glad to say, I finally found out. Thank You, Sphere Hunter.

I take it that you, Sphere, admire two of Capcom's high-profile early PS3/360 games, DMC 4 and Dead Rising 1. I agree, the early years of the 360/PS3 generation were truly some of the most magical years I've ever lived through. Dead Rising 1 is truly special in much of the correct ways: It's Capcom's first 360/PS3 gen title, it was developed in-house by Capcom of Japan (through production studio 1), its first new IP for the 360/PS3 gen, and it was a truly innovative new IP. Capcom came into the HD gen well-equipped by planning ahead, while other JP-based developers had a tough time trying to grasp the ropes (i.e. Square Enix). Dead Rising, as their first HD gen title and their first new IP for the seventh gen of gaming, coupled with a new gaming engine made by Capcom themselves, and a few gameplay innovations, was a huge gamble as a result, and one that, in the end, ultimately turned out successful. It got good reviews from both critics and gamers alike, it sold 1 million copies at the time of its original release on the 360, the character of Frank West managed to be Terence Rotolo's star-making role (and he's his baby), and in the end, essentially making it a platinum 360 title for Capcom. Coming off of a very successful PS2/Gamecube era, the early PS3/360 gen years held so much promise for Capcom. Now, Capcom wasn't perfect during the early PS3/360 years, but at least the company has still gotten this, as it has stuck with its modus operandi of developing games for its IPs in-house (as in not being crazy obsessed with Activision's business model and trying to ape the success of the Call of Duty games following CO4: MW) with Keiji Inafune along with the other top-level talent (Itsuno, Kobayashi, Ono, Takumi) still steering the company's ship though the uncharted waters of the early years of the PS3/360 era. And, like you pointed out in your DMC 4 retrospective, the early 2010s was when Capcom started to lose its way, as the success of Activision's business model (i.e. high-reward/low risk) and the financial success, and exploding popularity of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare caught the JP-based game company's attention towards Activision. It wanted to follow the leader. So, that is the reason why it decided to ship out some of its more popular IPs to Western-based (USA and Europe) develoeprs like Devil May Cry to Ninja Theory, Lost Planet to Spark Unlimited, and Dead Rising to Capcom Vancouver. It didn't help that, at the end of the year 2010, Inafune left Capcom, and the company almost began to falter and get lost in the far reache sof nowhere right away. Capcom Vancouver, without the JP-based team that worked on DR1, made DR3 as an attempt to appeal to the Call of Duty Crowd. Resident Evil 6, despite being developed in-house by Capcom, was made more into a Michael Bay action movie - packed with car chases and explosions - rather than the survival horror gameplay Mikami had envisioned. And, on top of that, Capcomd ecided to treat their mascot, Mega Man, like trash during its 2010-16 dork age by canning both Universe and Legends 3 and giving him a crummy iOS app by the name of Rockman Xover. Yes, there were a few gems during this dark and stormy time - RE: Revealations, DMC 4 Special Edition and Dragon's Dogma, most notably - but much of those gems were constantly smothered underneath a heaping pile of forgettable, Western-designed junk like DmC, Lost Planet 3 and RE6. And then we come to Dead Rising 4, which is essentially the DmC: Devil May Cry of Dead Rising games. It removed all of the challenge and appeal that the original, JP-developed title held. Oh yeah, and remember the ersatz Frank West in the game? He spouts out memes and things that date themselves quickly. "Thanks, Obama?" "Selfie?" Ugh. The original, Japan-developed Dead Rising will still be a gripping, atmospheric, innovative, appealing, challenging, and funny classic with tons of replayability in the next 30 to 55 years. But, in the year 2065, however, will anyone still remember Capcom Vancouver-developed Dead Rising 4? I truly doubt it. Capcom was successful and popular towards all kinds of gamers in past console generations and the first 3-4 years of the PS3/360 generation because it stuck to its status quo in terms of game development. By following Activision's high-reward/low-risk strategy and business model in the later years of the PS3/360 generation, Capcom themselves totally forgot to play the long game big time. It would take them until the middle of the current gen (PS4/XONE) to learn their errors of their ways that they created during the mid-twilight years of the PS3/360 gen, and now they're back to what they used to be, releasing games such as DMC5 and RE2 Remake. I could feel and see the same old good spark they had during the early years of the seventh generation of console gaming because of this. All in all, it's pretty disheartening to see Dead Rising, much like Devil May Cry and Resident Evil before it, get royally screwed over by Capcom's Western-developed obsession by trying to act like the Eastern Activision before finding its footing again. Another fantastic early 360/PS3 game retrospecive review, Sphere. Great job! :)

I've been playing "Dead Rising 2" recently, and I like Chuck's determination to keep Katey alive, but what gets me is that he doesn't defend himself! Everybody's insulting you left and right, Jesus Christ defend yourself man! He starts making quips later on, but it's almost like he feels he has to make them. Dark humor, but he's not really that kind of person. Frank doesn't put up with any bullshit, or at least much of it. I started playing "Off The Record" recently, after the frustration with some of Dead Rising 2's things, and the first thing Frank does is immediately kick the asses of the thugs TK sent after him!

Great video. I have very fond memories with this game. We were 18 or 19 that summer, and my friend and I (RIP buddy) went to Gamestop. The dude behind the counter asks him "you guys want to pre-order Dead Rising? It's a game where you're trapped in a huge mall with zombies and everything is a weapon." He looks at me and back at him "hell yes I want to order Dead Rising!" We were not disappointed. The maniacal, side splitting laughter we had was priceless. Any time one or both of us had free time, we played it. I still remember when we had been playing it half an hour and he goes "are you hearing this dumbass music???" and we about died laughing. I also met my first real girlfriend that summer, and those memories among others comingle with this game for me. I ended up completing it, which is honestly something I rarely do. Fully leveled, saved all the survivors at least once, and then uncovered the truth. It was so fun to go back thru with the Mega Buster and humiliate the bosses. Playing this, we finally red ringed his early Xbox 360 the following February. Such good times with this game, so many memories. All I can do is smile at this.

You just earned a sub and a bell for spitting the final boss to death. Seriously.. that gave me a hearty chuckle. This video takes me back. I gave up on some tasks in this game. Getting all survivors, the population kill count, answering Otis every time. These all took a backseat to the struggle of trying to read the text on my old, standard-def CRT television, finding scantily clad zombies to photograph for the erotic PP bonus (which was absurdly amusing), and making zombies slip on cooking oil. Okay, those last two weren't a struggle, but playing this without HD was a squintfest. The old lady with the dog initiating the onslaught of mall occupants was all too real for me and made my blood boil.

Dead Rising is one of those great examples of Japanese creativity. When the west keeps making generic zombie shooters Capcom makes a goofy, but still thought provoking 3rd person action adventure with RPG elements in which you can skill zombies with any item you can get your hands on including food or plants and outfit the protagonist in child's clothes just because. As we've seen from Dead Rising 4, west tries to emulate Japanese creativity, but they just can't do it right.

When I finally got a 360, this was my first game and I devoured everything 100% - 7 day survivor included. The juxtaposed brutal and absurd tone is really special and the level of content and attention to detail is still impressive. Really happy memories and it's still in my personal top ten of all time
