@@BoooRadley Drake is not the be-all end-all of hip hop. No one is bigger than the program. It gets a 1 because he had The Weeknd writing his albums/he has Partynextdoor writing his albums. Along with all of the other OVO sweatshop minions. We’ll never 100% know the capabilities of his pen for certain. If you get caught copying someone’s homework you get a 0. Lucky I gave him a 1.

45:15 Been saying we over use the term "classic" for any high quality great album to the point you can make any great album a "classic". I always said if Take Care is considered a "classic" then DAMN., Flower Boy, Pray for Paris, The Never Story, Blank Face, TA1300, Kids See Ghost, Astroworld, ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$ are all "classics" then just to name a few I think there is a difference between a "cult classic" and classic. A "cult classic" could be just great albums that most people in the hip hop space think are great, but those that don't like those albums because of the sound can't agree of it's greatness. Albums that are "classics" like TPAB, MBDTF, The Chronic, Me Against the World, people could not be fans of these projects due to their sound but can't deny how great they are for its quality. That's just my piece though.

@Doriiaan 22 күн бұрын
In my view a classic is an album that’s crucial for understanding the genre or zeitgeist, it doesn’t mean it has to be excellent in terms of quality. There’s no way we can write hip hop’s modern history without mentioning Take care, because it sent the genre into a different trajectory than what would arguably had been if it wasn’t for it. Drake and his sound has been a dominant force in hip hop, and pop music in general, for 10+ years after Take care.

The way isee versatility is in two parts. The first is what Feefo was talking about, different types of songs with different artists, with his colonizin ass. The second is with his voice. Compare his voice to someone like Kendrick. Kendrick has a myriad of different voices he uses to convey different types of emotions and to underscore certain points. Drake seems to be always in that monotone voice, which is hard for me to listen to a full project from him. I think 5 in versatility is the highest that he can hit, and I'm being generous

Vocabulary: 5 Flows: 7 Versatility: 7 Originality: 5 Wordplay: 5 Delivery: 7 Presence: 8 Creativity: 4 Catalog: 5 Beat selection: 7 Overall: 6.5 Can’t deny he makes hits. But as an artist he average. Yeah Relle would be closest to mine. Although originality and versatility would have been a bit lower. But I'm highest on presence and delivery. I feel like most pop stars and mainstream artists hit high on those markers. And that's what Drake is to me. He's not original and thus his wordplay suffers. Now catalog is a 5 for me but in 2016 it would have been an 8.5 or 9. His back half of his discography or everything he's done since has hurt him there imo. So half his catalogue or his first half of his career was solid work. The last half or last 8 years has not been for me.

@@Newportnews98 I've heard this take many times, and I think for the most part people are just talking about how both Drake and LL will make straight-forward hip-hop songs but also dabble in making club hits and bops for women. However, that's where the similarities end. Drake's flows, pen game, cadences, and melodies sound literally nothing like LL in any way.
@67Dragonball
@67Dragonball 21 күн бұрын
@@milesbrowning3593But that’s down to the natural progression of how diverse rap became around the late 90s onwards. I would compare Drake more so to a Nelly or Jason Derulo in terms of the content just updated for a 2010s aesthetic. I’ll give you that Drake at least is more versatile that people give him credit for even if some of that truth is mixed with him only appropriating styles for his benefit.
@sammartin7332

Whether you like drake or not how could anybody seriously argue that he isn't versatile? He literally has songs for every mood, every genre and on every album theres a few songs for everybody.
@topbackpodcast2615
@topbackpodcast2615 23 күн бұрын
You kind of have to break down what versatile means in the realm of hip hop. Because in my opinion I don’t think Drake is as versatile as people may think. Just because he sings and raps isn’t good enough. His subject matter has always been the same since So Far Gone. It’s literally just about fame and girls and occasionally a song about his family. But he has never rapped about politics or real life issues outside of his little bubble. Thats why I think a 5 for Drake versatility wise is actually perfect. True definition of a versatile hip hop artist is Andre 3000 and Lil Wayne. Tha Carter III is a perfect example. Every song on that album is very different from one another.

@@topbackpodcast2615meh I don't about that. Wayne is most known for rapping about women, drugs, and money. I would still consider him a versatile artist tho because he has a couple songs talking about his childhood su!clde attempt, his mom, etc. And he has multiple sounds, flows, song structure. Drake does the same thing. Raps about money, women. Then has b sides talking about his dad, insecurities, all that stuff. Has a rapper bag, rnb bag, trap, party, conscious, all that good stuff. Just because he doesn't rap about politics specifically doesn't mean he's not versatile imo. Being able to rap about his personal life on a timestamp record, make a club banger, make a women anthem, and work with the new kids on the same album is being versatile.
